GETTING A 24ft RACE TRAILER CROSS COUNTRY READY we are getting this enclosed cargo car hauler trailer ready for the road trip across the USA to hit some events and we inspect the wheel bearings on the trailer as well as the dexter 12" drum brakes on these 5200lb axles and also install an anvil 17000 lb winch to be able to pull our vehicle into the trailer safely when loading.

Just a heads up. Don't walk over or around that cable while you are winching and it's under tension. If that cable gives out for whatever reason you could get seriously injured. Also a good idea to lay something over the middle of the cable while winching. Some type of heavy bag or something. It'll act as a "brake" should the cable let loose. Low chances of something happening, but, you know, shit does happen.

Good advice especially for a metal cable, with a nylon/synthetic winch rope the energy does not slingshot in the same manner. Regardless, its a good habit to act like its a metal winch cable. Also never pull the winch hook by the metal hook, grab the attached lanyard instead.

@@l33ta2 True. Less mass on the synthetic rope. I still wouldn't want to be anywhere near it if it broke. I've seen Jeeps get f'd up by synthetic rope when it breaks.

Little tip, not that you need it, but maybe for some of your subscribers. I over the years have learned that the best grease is high temp marine grease, I use it for everything in automotive applications, bearings, ball joints, etc.

It is best to attach to the suspension rather than the frame. Compressing the suspension is not ideal for towing. Every bump you hit the tie downs can come a little loose.

Just to make life easier on your alternator a solar panel kit on the roof will keep the battery charged up with no worries ever again. Kit comes with a controller so it never over charges. At some point I'd add a second battery and an AC DC inverter in case you require 120AC for charging power tools or whatever. I realize the Ram likely already has one but in the trailer would be handy in future. LED strip lighting is stupid easy to install and runs right off your battery. Just some suggestions. I luv watching your vids before I go to sleep. Peaceful way to end the day.

I own and have used that same tool for about 25years, it's awesome, much better than the old fashioned way of hand packing my dad taught me about 40years ago!

Along with the spare tire, you may want to take a spare set of pre-packed bearings. It’s a cheap piece of insurance on a long haul and an easy roadside replacement to make.

I've never owned a trailer or operated a winch, so I at least feel familiar after watching your video! I plan on saving it for future reference. Where do you think that you'll store the spare tire? Thank you so much, John, for sharing/ elaborating on trailer ownership, serving, and maintenance!!!

My back ground is in aviation so I gotta correct you on the bearing preload. This universal rule of thumb of finger tight on tapered bearings after torquing is incorrect. The bearings need more preload than that otherwise they will float against the bearing inner and outer race after breaking in. Once you seat the bearing by tightening and rotating the wheel, there is suppose to be enough tension on the bearing so when you spin the wheel, it slows down due to some resistance. I always do mine with the tire in the hub. Set bearing with torque, loosen then go finger tight. Then start spinning the wheel as you further tighten until the wheel starts to slow down. Now spin wheel really hard and it should slow down but not just stop immediately. The wheel should just ever free spin like a merry go round. Free spinning bearing aren't tight enough. I know this sounds off but during aviation landing gear training the bearing are pretty much the same thing as automotive taper bearings. This is what we were instructed and it applies to ALL tapered bearings. Grab any brand new front wheel hub bearing for a front wheel drive car or even a truck and try to spin it an notice how stiff the bearing is. That's the preload you need. This finger tight method is why taper bearings pre maturity fail and why yours were loose from before being diassembled.

I wonder if that’s why the guy sold the trailer the grease when hot maybe smoked a little on a longer trip and thought it needed brakes and cause the seal was bad and over grease the nipple cause it’s so easy????? Something to keep in mind not to put to much grease in the spindle???!!!! What do you think??????coming out great as all of the stuff you do!!!!

To bad you don’t have the time to put a tow hook similar to the foreign cars where you just screw it in and attach the hook!!???? Wasn’t crazy about seeing the strap on the rubber boot hopefully it doesn’t cause a problem with a lot of loading and unloading!!!???
