Closed comments bc i am getting a lot of unsolicited advice/rude ppl who don't think i know anything about piggies 🤣 i have owned piggies for like 7+ years and have done my own research.
Here are some responses to these comments/concerns:
1. "Grass is not a substitute for hay!"
Hay is literally dried grass. The kind i make may not be timothy grass but other types of hay are acceptable as well. People with timothy hay allergies feed meadow hay(which is a mix of diff grasses) or orchard hay to their piggies. I got like 4 different types of grass growing in my backyard, and in the summer it grows super long so my piggies get the stem, flower, and leaves of grass plants. From what I read hay is mainly used for keeping their teeth short and doesnt have much nutritional value. Also commercially sold hay may contain dead mice/lots of dust/ nylon rope bits. I've seen people's horror stories on fb groups. I have fed homemade hay to my piggies for years and my last piggie lived until 7. People with pet bunnies also make homemade hay. I see no reason why homemade hay should not be fed to piggies.
2. "Why did you buy Snoopy from a breeder when there are so many that need to be adopted?"
I dont think people should be shamed for buying from breeders/petstores, they are not the ones responsible for abandoned piggies, the people who get them without being committed are responsible. (And the people who do adopt/foster are angels!) Some people may not live near any rescues and petstores are their only options. I got snoopy from a breeder because I wanted a californian piggy which are extremely rare in Canada, plus the breeder I am supporting is not a hoarder/irresponsible breeder. She breeds a lot of "show" and special breeds which go to contests and win prizes. :) Every piggy regardless of where they come from deserves a good home, even if they did come from a petstore.
3. "Snoopy needs a friend"
I am aware that there are many benefits from having another piggy friend and I would LOVE to have more! But piggies tend to fight/not get along and it happens more often than people think. In serious cases they have to live in separate cages. Right now I dont have the space for two separate cages if things go south, and am waiting until i am able to provide that. Aside from an extra cage, you would also have to buy 2x the bedding, spend 2x the amount of time to clean their cage, and take them out separately for floor time. I would like to avoid that as much as possible LOL, and i heard it is easier to bond babies with adults so i think it will also be easier once Snoopy is older too.
4 . "But human company is not enough!"
I dont believe that human company is not enough to satisfy them because I have seen so many cases of guinea pigs prefering human company instead. They are domesticated animals and can bond with humans. My friend who has 6 have 2 that need to live separately because 1 gets bullied and 1 bullies others. I have read cases where someone with 3 boars had to separate all of them, or some get along at first and stop getting a long later. Some people get solo pigs a new friend after their older friend passes, and the solo pig ends up hating the new friend. In my personal experience, I had 2 females before and when I introduced them to other piggies in a new space they ALWAYS fought. So every case is different and i believe the hours i spend with Snoopy daily are enough to keep him happy. If you do not agree with me u do not have to watch his videos :)
5. "It is illegal to have 1 guinea pig in switzerland"
Yes i am aware lol. In switzerland they have services to "rent out piggies" to people, such service does not exist/is harder to access in other countries. Solo piggies are unavoidable as most people do not want to continuously keep buying guinea pigs when one passes away, or keep getting new ones if bonding doesnt work out. Every situation is different, some piggies do better living alone.
6. "He will be lonely"
Lots of solo animals in loving homes will be lonely on a daily basis. E.g dogs feel lonely when their humans go to work. That doesnt mean they dont live a pretty damn good life. Lots of resources say human companionship is good enough for guinea pigs provided that you spend enough time with them and provide them with lots of treats/toys to play with. (Which i do with Snoopy! He is constantly purring and popcorning, def not signs of a depressed piggy)

picking up my new baby guinea pig vlog! He's a Californian guinea pig born on October 3rd! When he grows up he will have the smudgey nose, lol I'm obsessed... Californian guinea pigs look like little bears!
ya'll im so happy...:3 I legit couldn't sleep for the 3 nights leading up to his pick up date!
I FINALLY HAVE A NEW PIGGY FRIEND! Can't wait to spoil him give him all the kisses veg and love hehe!
