It's a good idea not to nail every row as they would need to be cut out to replace or when roof replaced. Best is nail every second row ridges and eves ,use a tile that interlocks better or increase headlamp if your worried ,get some samples to check overlap. Also I noticed the old Redlands 50 tiles I have don't interlock well and there's daylight through my torn felt. When I got some derrie mark 2 tiles the interlock is much more secure.

Building Control told me to ask Klober if Permo Forty is breathable enough for a non vented cold roof, Klober tech in UK said no and I should use Permo air. Maybe they’ve changed the spec now, it was 2 years ago.

In fact the only breatherball felt is roofshield green felt but u still need to ventilation from the eaves and the ridge if u can’t do the ridge ur need vents all along the top

Proctor roofshield. Proper breathable felt but you pay for it

Membrane can cost from £60 to £200 per roll proctor roofshield being one of the top membrane and says no further ventilation required , if it does need further ventilation why spend all that money ,just get a breathable membrane look for the correct features ,at a third of the cost and ventilate . Why spend out for top quality membrane and still ventilate

Also good idea to have an ample overlap on the underlay itself.

Thanks for the good tips Georgina. One I have heard is that if you are having a new roof you need to ensure the loft insulation is up to current standards, the work has to be notified to Building Control so you need to ensure it complies with the regulations. Some LA's do police this quite aggressively so it is important to budget for insulation too in most cases.

So any rain that gets through drains down the roof. If membrane is taut rains accumulated against the batton and rots it.

Roof felt should be draped over rafters not tight as to channel water down felt between rafters/battons to the eave when roof is not tiled or slated

I am wondering am I allowed to do this myself in the UK, or do I need any kind of permission from the local council? I do have experience in re-roofing, as I was working in construction abroad. Also, am I allowed to put up a scaffolding myself, or does it need to be by a firm? Great video and every help is appreciated, thank you

If you own your house then of course mate, you’d just have to take liability if you made a dogs dinner of it, plus you’d need to think about pricing and measuring out for the correct amount of tiles, battens, ridge, cement and sand depending on the amount of mortar work. I would suggest having an actual roofer price it at least for you before taking it on yourself.

@@kx189989 in the end we went with roofers as it only costed £3500 plus skip for all the work and materials including scaffolding. S I could have saved mabe few hundreds which was really not worth it, especially because I could have actually worked some extra shifts at work on those days and break even at the end

I was quoted for a reroof of a detached standard 3 bed house.. 7,500 euro ...membrane batton and slate included. How much abouts does a roofer make on a job like this.?
@raybans8712
@raybans8712 3 жыл бұрын
Detached or semi detached? What slate/tile are you going for? I do a semi detached in London with large interlocking tiles for around £6500 that’s scaffolding, skip, materials and labour. After I’ve paid for everything and everyone I have around £2000 for myself as I do the work as well. Takes a week to do. Hope this helps

I would just add that breathable membranes aren't always the answer. I'm using a plastic tile. These tiles are non permeable, unlike concrete and clay. So a non breathable membrane is specified to stop alot of the water vapour getting above the membrane and stuck under the tiles in the batten cavity. Very few people mention this, and I only just caught it In time by reading the detailed installation instructions. The 50mm gap for tiles and insulation and ridge and eave vents are crucial with plastic tiles, faux slate tiles.

Good roofers are time served traditionalists, few move with the times, I've witnessed new upcoming roofers and in some cases are virtually experimenting on a property, it's not easy to choose a good one these days. 👍

So now we the Homeowners, have to not only check out the Roofer and wade through the miriad of scarily different quotes. We also have to check out the quality of the battons, ring the membrane manufacurers. Get up that scaffolding and measure the overlap and how many nails, check the quality and size of the tiles and that the felt is tight, the dry ridges are installed properly and have a waterproof membrane. The leadword is grade 4, 3, 2, 1 whatever, check its over the tiles, or under. Isn't having a new roof stressful enough? That's it, I'll have get a drone to film every move these nail skimping scammers make now, more money! Sufferin soffits.....

No1 if your felt was pulled tight .when a tile fall out roof would still be watertight .lumpy and creased is not water tight .if tile come out you would get a build up of water on your lumpy creased felt which in turn would cause a big volume of water going in in loft .tight felt no problem because it would flow down to gutter .no damage .then easy to put one tile in .if you don't no this you should learn as you are working on people's houses after a good winter your new roof would need doing again
