Unofficial taxi charges 2 to 4 times the cost of an official taxi in Rome. Don't OVER PAY! Only take a real official taxi in Rome. "Fake" taxis are easy to spot if you know what to look for. Thank you so much for the info. When I was last in Rome, one of our group people got separated from us. She took a ride from St. Peter's to our hotel. Cost her 45 euros. I thought that was a lot. So this info is sure helpful.

I glad you liked the video. I hear all too often people feeling the were overcharged on a taxi here and every time it ended up not being on an official taxi. Often times people walk up to taxi stands and someone approaches them asking if then need a ride so they think they are getting into a taxi

How does freenow work in Florence? Reviews are mixed

It works great in Rome not so sure about Florence. I’ve never used it there. Florence is kind of a small city so easy to walk from one into the other. I never was in need of a taxi or public transportation.

Thanks for the video! Could you tell me about the typical tipping amount for taxis in Rome? Also, do taxis usually accept cards, or should I plan to have cash on hand? And is FreeNow also available or easy to use in Florence?

All taxis should accept credit card but I always let them know in advance that I will be using a credit card before getting in this way they do not pressure you to use cash at the end. Drivers do make more money if the do not have to pay the credit card fees but it is just part of doing business. The only ones I have had a problem with is women Also, kind of interesting taxi drivers can charge you one euro per bag when they take you somewhere in addition to the fee and the only drivers that I have had charge me the extra fee were women. That’s my experience I’m just sharing nothing against women but they seem to be More sensitive to extra fees. Another tip would be just to be safe. Make sure when you get in the car that they turn the meter on and look at the meter and if they for some reason forget to turn the meter on you need to remind them. They all speak English enough to know what you’re talking about.. taxis do charge a small extra fee for late night and Sundays and holidays. Just FYI. As far as tipping, you always round up the meter and then a small tip in edition is what I do on the drive one or two extra euro. If they end up charging me for bags I don’t tip them. That’s me but tip them whatever you feel like it doesn’t need to be much.

Free now you can also use in Florence however, the city is small. He won’t need to use the taxi very often maybe just from the train station to your hotel and back

I went to a gas station after hours or on a holiday and a volunteer attendant helped me out. He kept running my card through various pumps trying to get it to work and I finally realized he was activating gas to sell to the next guy

It is customary to round up to the next euro above that it’s really personal but one extra euros plenty. Romans typically just round up sometimes a taxi driver round up for you meaning the meter says 1525 and he charges €16.
