Pickpockets in Rome has been a problem for several decades. It is a problem that may be getting worse but it is hard to know for certain as most pickpockets are never reported. I estimate that there are several thousand pickpockets in Rome on a busy day. Learn who pickpockets target & how most pickpockets in Rome take place. I'm from NYC, but live in Rome. The best way to avoid scams is to tap into your inner New Yorker: Don't talk to anyone and yell NO! when random people try to sell you anything on the street, or try to tell you a phony hard luck story. Walk with confidence and learn the art of the dirty look. Haven't been scammed anywhere in the world, and I've been to some pretty rough places..

On our last visit to Rome we were having lunch sitting outside. I was sitting facing the street. Saw many people walking by scanning tables .. So yes they are out there. When traveling I wear pants with zipper pockets.

Yeah, zippers work. Anything not to be easy target that’s all you have to do.

What we also do is stand against the wall at d station, while one is doing any machine (ATM, tickets etc) one stands guard and watches while d other one does the transaction and it helps 😊

Same here! We did that in London as gypsies were crowding us so I watched and he did the transaction.

They set us up for a distraction in Rome. One stuck his hands in my husbands back pocket and everyone was startled. MY bag was slashed by a woman in front of me. She got nothing as my money and cards were in a back pocket towards me. We are going this summer and we are both using Travelon bags as they have locks on all the zippers. Slash proof bag and strap. I have taken this to Amsterdam and London. One look at my bag, they move on.

You know that’s a really good tip. I forgot to put out carrying the right kind of bad can make a big difference especially ones that are designed to be hack resistant.

I carry a cheap, "fake" wallet. It has little fake currency "notes" and old, fake credit cards. The "currency" says "F*** You" in the native language. It's just great. I love it.

@@rozierroama If the given event is near my home, I carry little shopping bags. Contents ? Sealed Ziploc bags with dogsh*t in them. Sometimes I'll put in a fishhead, along with used toilet paper.

Thanks for this information, how much is a train ticket from the airport to Termini station? We are a party of 5 ladies we will be in Rome in April on route to Civitavecchia, we have an overnight in Rome. I have seen prices of taxis from the airport costing €50 to city central. 🤔🤔Thanks.

Taxis are €50 for up to four people you could probably negotiate €70 for five people express train is €14 per person and then a bus or taxi from there so it’s better to take a taxi from the airport directly to your hotel or Airbnb

@@rozierroama. Yes. The first trip to Rome we took the train from the airport with luggage. Then, at the termini a cab to the hotel. Going home we just took the cab all the way to the airport. We didn’t want the hassle.

What do you think about those travelers moneybelts or neck wallets? Do they help prevent theft? Also, do the pickpockets snatch cell phones?

Anything you can do to make it harder works they will just look for an easier target.

Yes! They take phones off tables when you’re eating. One quick swipe…gone. People stick them in their pockets for “easy access” and the pick pockets know that. They watch. I am really going to have to watch. I take mine in and out of my bag taking photos.

Using a backpack where pickpockets thrive is an open invitation to open them up and take what they 'need'. My relatives offered me the backpack and I said they were crazy. People don't like the truth as it turns out.

Most of the time when I am on the Metro I have gym closes in my backpack so I am not too concerned but many people have let me know my zippers have been unzipped when riding so they are trying. One gur let me know just the other day he was picked on the metro and just a few minutes later another gut tried to pick him again. The problem is real.

Everybody gets picked in Rome .The only way to avoid it is to carry a little cash but all the rest inside your clothes across your chest.

Seriously sir, are you high or what. A scam is a scam..Whats ok for you doesn't mean it has be ok for everyone. A murderer is a murder , be it a 14 year old or a 30 year old...

I appreciate your point, but please understand. Most scams in Rome still give you something that you weren’t expecting to purchase or donate to you’re out maybe five dollars but if you pickpocketed you’re gonna be out of wallet, money, credit cards, and maybe even a passport it’s gonna cost you €125 to replace and a headache. If somebody hands you a rose and then expect you to give them five euros for it so you give them five euros you got a rose, even though you didn’t want one and you kind of feel scammed, but you’re not out that much plus you did get a rose. if someone takes a picture with the gladiator and then wants €10. Yeah, you kind of got scammed as you thought it was free but you did get a picture with the gladiator. Not the end of your day. If somebody tells you to sign a petition to end drug use in Rome, and then they sneakily persuade you to donate to the cause and you do. Yeah, it went to a scam organization, but you’re really not out much if someone hands you a bracelet and says that it is free and after you have it, they would then want you to pay money and you’re in an awkward situation so you give them five euros. Yeah you kind of got scammed but you did get a bracelet and it’s not the end of your day. Most scams in Italy are harmless. Being pickpocketed cannot only ruin your day, but in some instances ruin your vacation.
