Getting a Tumor Removed from my Greyhound (and finding out what it is)

Hi, I’m Steph! A DIYer, author, and podcast host. I live in Tallahassee, FL with my two adopted greyhounds. Both are retired racers adopted from Greyhounds as Pets in Jacksonville, FL.
I adopted Mac in 2018, and she was born 2014. I adopted Tosh in 2020, and she was born 2017.
Together they are Mac & Tosh (yes, that is a reference to my favorite computer, the Macintosh)!
Every greyhound is different and I am just sharing my experience with my greyhounds. This is for entertainment purposes.

My vet is $20 per visit. When my doberman had pancreatitis I needed a $60 water taxi one way, a 350 taxi ride ( 5 hrs) there and back and the vet total exam treatment X-rays, ultrasound, intervienes , overnight stay, meds was $300 plus I came home with a bag of kibble and 4 cans food

My grey had also has growth the grew bigger in a week in same spot and same hair colour as mac also found to be fine

My girl grey had histiocytoma which is a raised hairless red lump. She didn't find it painful but I think it itched her as she would nibble it. It grew really quick even from the time of vet diagnosis to removal 2 weeks later. They can disappear as rapid as they grow & has had one since on her back that did that. I can't remember how much it cost & the insurance doesn't display how much I paid as it was 2021. Everything was thankfully covered by the pet insurance & I remember thinking it was alot but I'm grateful that I was covered. I pay £40 a month for upto £7k £99 excess rolling annual cover. I'm relieved for you that She is ok 🤩❤️

Here in Northern California it would be in the thousands ... $3 or $4,000.... because of the general anesthesia.

My dog had a benign lump and that was removed and she is fine now, my dog is 11 now. I check her everyday anyway (health checks) as I learnt that during my time stufying animal care/welfare.

I know this will upset some people, but I feel compelled to just throw this out there... My whip has had those little fatty cysts numerous times. They're pretty common. It's pretty easy for a trained eye to tell by looking at them, that's what it is. Breeders often take those off themselves. In fact, I had a breeder I know take all his off. They get pressed out with a little tool. If something is irregular and bleeding or something, that's a different story. But I personally would not risk putting a dog under for that. Not trying to offend, just offering an alternative. I know everybody wants what's best for our furry friends.

I went with the recommendation of my vet. She knew my concern about putting Mac under for it, but based on her experience she thought this was the best option (especially since it was growing). Luckily I trust my vet and know she would not recommend something that was unnecessary. I did think about it and research before I decided to move forward.

If it is the same as I think, I have always seen them as old age skin tags. Not a worry at all. If they suddenly grow bigger, bleed, or if red, I would be concerned, but I rarely see an old dog without 1 to 5 of them. They tend to die 5, 10 years later, with the skin tags just the same as all those years later. If red or growing or bleeding, or sore - but if just black, I really see them as old age skin tags.

Here in the uk it’s in £ obvs, but I’ll try guessing in dollars. Had something similar on my lab, it was£183, so… $ 225 .including biopsy etc. WOW, 3 times my cost!

My 11 year old rat terrier has a growth on her lower back which has been there at least 6 months, but I don't have money to take her to the vet.

oh my gosh I thought the bill was about $2,000 i was waaaayyy off ! i just thought it was that high because my girl grey Trudy has a rotted tooth in the back of her mouth from when she was a racer and to take it out the vet gave us an estimate of $1,000 :( :( :(
