I ordered the 60 pound bag. I broke it down into quart Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. When I open a bag I keep it in my freezer and use as needed. I have gone through 3 quart bags in a year. I purchased the bag from bargain bin because it had just expired. No difference in taste. Love having it on hand!

Nice I even reuse my Mylar as long as it’s the same item going in it like beans or rice.

if you can afford it, you might want to invest in a freeze dryer. A channel I like to watch is called living simply in Alaska. They have a huge green house and a garden. You just have to know what zone you live in to know what plants will grow in your area. Becky from the channel acre homestead also freeze dries milk, beef and chicken broth which makes them into powder form.

Thank you for the information. I want a freeze dryer when I can afford it. Simple living paladins and I are not in the same zone but they are still such an amazing channel and lots to learn or just simply enjoy from them. I love Becky also. She does lots of interesting things I agree.

I buy yellow cheddar powder at an Amish store near me. I store in my freezer in a canning jar. Recipe I came up with to use it…. For roast or air fry cauliflower…. Cut in chunks or slice head into 1/2” slice, drizzle with butter or olive oil, sprinkle with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder. Roast 400 for 15 -20 mins. Take out and turn pieces. Sprinkle well with cheese powder. Return to oven until done to your liking … from 10-30 more minutes. This is really good.

Hi Jess... My name Jess too. Fuel and shipping up everywhere, but Azure by far has the best prices on their items. Most places have grains, for example, twice price plus insane shipping. Plus I know Azure grain is great quality and "clean". I buy many more items from them, but the weight of the grains and beans is what really adds to shipping costs. Getting my next delivery Sunday. I am always excited to get it, LoL 😜 Great video. I love your sparkling personality 🤗

I use buttermilk powder in my sourdough items, bread, biscuits, English muffins etc.. I just sift/mix it into the flour mix before I add any liquids. I purchase it in bulk and separate it into lunch paper bags then into a vacuum seal bag then mylar bag. You don’t have to store it this way however it just works for me, I store a cup of powder in each bag. I have buttermilk powder that has expired 6 months ago but it is perfectly good, I have never had any go rancid when I store it this way.

You pronounced it right...adzuki. You can also sprout them, as well. They are very versatile and I have some in my storage. Being a child of the south, and parents that lived through the Great Depression...we had pinto beans a lot, but that is not the only type. My dad enjoys butter beans, a type of lima bean, and in the south, there are a BUNCH of peas...Crowder, purple hull, cream, black-eyed...and more. If you can get ahold of some, my absolute favorite bean is Anazazi bean that is native to the Four Corners area. My aunt discovered them while driving through to visit her son when he was stationed in Alaska, so the whole family loves them. I try to pick up some as I go through there going to and from home (Texas). I have to correct you on the grits part. Grits are made by first treating the corn in a lye solution to make what is called hominy, then dehydrating it, and grinding it once it is dry. Very near where I get the Anazazi beans, in Cortez, Colorado, they have a grain mill where you can buy purple corn meal, and it's fantastic!
@modernhomesteadalaska
@modernhomesteadalaska 2 жыл бұрын
Oh good thank you. I’ll be on the lookout. I will do more research I had looked up grinding the corn for months and was sure I knew. But back to the drawing board. It’s funny I have dry hominy on my Amazon list! Growing up in Texas and Missouri it’s a staple there. And can’t find it up here. I could see if they have a Mexican store around that would have it. (We don’t eat a lot of grits) but I do like cornbread and other corn stuff.

Now quinoa my sister made me a chocolate cake out of that you have to pulverize it. I keep powdered butter milk in a glass jar in the fridge. It has not gone bad as yet and it is over a yr and half. The natural pantry in Anchorage has gamma lids for sure regular lids. Call them and see if they have the gamma lids and if not when they will have them in stock. I seen gamma lids at Home Depot crazy they don't have them. Just checked Amazon has them in stock 10.03 a piece and in 14 different colors says they will be delivered before April 26 but you can get faster delivery. For grinding grains I use a attachment for my KitchenAid but you must have a professional because grinding grains or meat will cause the motor to heat up and burn it out, the professional will shut off before any damage happens to the motor. I looked at other grinding units some are pretty nice but I had the KitchenAid already and I just couldn't add another machine when the KitchenAid can do the job.

Hi, I've been watching you for a few months now and wondered about an update on if it is more affordable to buy through Azure or local? I'm a young widow moving the kids and I up come spring '23 after we sell our home and find a place there. (Getting SOOO anxious about it.). I have been wondering about adding additional dry foods to bring with us when we move and would appreciate any tips or advice. We are looking at the Wasilla area after learning Google maps aren't up to par on time it takes and Willow would be too far of a drive for work options. How is Verizon cell service there in the valley and Anchorage? I work from home and need good internet. Thank you! ~Honey

I ordered the hard white wheat berries and they had just received a order. They have been running out of the wheat berries so I had them send it through the mail to me. This cost me a extra hundred bucks but it was still cheaper than getting it through Amazon. I grind my own flour and use it all the time.

Great idea. Yes folks are ha I g to find new ways of Goethe wheat and it makes it hard when we are all pulling from the same pool. But I try and remind myself we are lucky to be able to switch up what we get.

@@modernhomesteadalaska it really is just about finding the best way to get it. For me I love azure standard and have really found the quality of the products to be very good while the prices are reasonable. The one thing I hate is when products are sold out even after I have placed the order and the cutoff date. Today the raspberries and the raisins look like they will not ship. I have tried 4 times to get the raspberries and will continue to keep trying because you can’t get them anywhere around me. Even with the problems they are still worth it for me. I can only imagine how hard it would be with the shipping cost in AK. That had to suck when it raises the over all prices by almost 50%

@@Mindy56743 right it’s a hard balance and not having been here long and for the most part not having a place to store it until now. I feel like I’m in a loosing spot. I have got to keep plugging away and find the cheapest way forward. Maybe it ends up just pinto and black beans from Costco and only a few verity from azure. I’ll, be doing the math for sure.

@@modernhomesteadalaska math sucks but it is incredibly important with feeding a family. I get as much as I can from azure but meats, dairy and most produce comes from local farmers for me. I can’t afford to get it from azure.

Mindy right. I get some messages asking me about meat or or say things like can’t you just hunt or fish and leave food for others. I’m like well the law says NO! But yes we will try and go that direction that’s why we moved. But until then we do the best we can do. And fill hungry bells to the best of our ability. Praying my garden turns out and we get lots of fish and some hunting in.

Yes we do the tart cherry juice (unsweetened) I also heard rose hips. We have them all over here but it will be fall before I can harvest. Trying a full diet overhaul for him. It’s just gotten so bad.
