Getting an old Briggs & Stratton 2 hp engine running

This engine still doesn't run good, but it at least runs and, if you have any idea of what I could use this for let me know down in the comment section.

There was one of these sitting around in a tool room at my school missing some parts, my teacher is letting me restore it to learn how to fix small engines, I'm not really Qualified give advice on your restore, but I have that thing pulled entirely apart, you might want to take the head off to see if the valves have a bunch of crap all over them like the one I'm restoring does, like you said, bad rings, and maybe rehone the cylinder if you can. Personally, I'd say just take it apart and clean absolutely everything out of it too, it wouldn't hurt. Maybe get gasket kit so everything is all good and sealed. The one I pulled apart had all kinds of soot caked onto the valves and head of the engine, that could be a problem you're having, just clean it out with brake cleaner and a wirebrush, take the valves out with some help and clean them and their little seats. That's what I'm doing to mine, hope it can help, great job with yours, keep learning!

Thanks, I may make another video of me doing some more restoring work on this engine. It doesn't run smoothly still so I would say you're right, it's definitely worth tearing apart and cleaning.

Hello , great video . If your not going take this engine apart and you can get a torque wrench the side case bolts are 90inch pounds and retighten the headbolts to 140 inch pounds . On the side of the shroud are some numbers . Under the word Code ,the first 2 numbers are the year the engine was made . Good luck . Im working on the same engine . Also if the sticker on the shroud in the center of the shroud says Magnatron says elecronic ignition so no points .

Thanks for the comment, we are in the process of moving right now so I don't have all my tools or the engine with me. But thanks for the info I'd love to take a deeper dive into this engine at some point in the future.

the mixture screw should be 1.5 turns out to get it running start by turning it all the way in but not tight. fill the tank half way to adjust it fully.

Great video, but just a bit of advice: Never start these on concrete. You'll run the risk of cracking the block.

check the hole in the needle valve seat behind the needle valve

I am pretty sure this engine does not have a needle sense it is a carburetor that's directly connected to the fuel tank with a straw. But normally it would be a good idea to check that.
