ive got a old 85 Johnson with a old bassboat i got from the owner of a scrap yard who took it on a trade. The state originally would not give me a registration but finally did. I dont know anything about hooking it up and starting. My dad never had a boat while i was growing up. im 64 now. This is the best video so far explaining whats what. That looks pretty good I just got a johnson 30hp, 1990 and looks waaay worst ,I don't know anything about boat motors I'm hoping I can get it to run ,this video gave me a place to start haha thanks man

Hi Matthew, it Abraham from South Africa. I love your video repair on that 35hp Johnson Outboard Motor. (5 parts). I got the same motor and had also corroded power cables and also a bad solinoid what I had replaced. Boat was standing for about 10 months. After fixing everything it's started fine. I left it for 24hrs and try it again. It started after the 3rd try and run fine but after about 5 minutes it started sounds like it starting to mis a bit. I thought it was the timming so I left it. A week later I desided to go and test it on the water but no luck. It start fine for a view seconds then it backfire and cut out. I tried for about a hour but the same thing happens, it start and after a view seconds it backfire and cuts out. What can the problem be. I'm not very clude up with outboard motors.

Hmmm. You need to determine if it is spark or fuel related - that would help. I am thinking it could be the ignition coil that is getting hot, and not working. See if it runs longer with the cover off.

@mbrenengen Thanks, I will try it out again next weekend. On a tour at the moment. It was starting fine after we had replaced the cables and a solenoid, but when we tried a week later, no luck. We think it might be fuel related.

My outboard will start idle and accelerate if you pull on the carb. But if you use the twist throttle it dies

You need an Ignition switch to hook to the control box wires... otherwise you have no power to the ignition...!
