The plants are oil refineries or powerplants, CA is a major oil-producing state. Lots of oil offshore, so the plants are next to the ocean for easy access, they have pipelines on the ocean floor that go from the rigs to the plants. The ones by Trestles are the remnants of a nuclear power plant that is no longer running. This was built by the ocean to have access to the water for the plant.

There's lots of industrial plants in El Segundo. There's a power plant as well as a water treatment plant. The power plant is near the water to have easy access to sea water for cooling (though that plant no longer uses sea water). The water treatment plant is near the ocean for obvious reasons. Then there is the industrial plant right on the beach at El Porto. It's owned by Chevron and I suspect it has something to do with offloading the oil from the tankers offshore, but I don't know that for certain even though I surf in front of it regularly.

I live in the town that Porto is in (Manhattan Beach) and the power plants are there because they need the ocean to cool down the plant. Out past the plant, there are massive vents that suck in water. They put in multiple jettys in the south bay to protect the plants by stopping the natural sand flow from the LA river & Santa Monica rivers which ended up messing up the surf which is why its always closed out lol

Power stations need lots of cooling water, so they build them close to cold oceans. I wish they could build them inland a bit and simply pipe the water to them. Such a pity to ruin the coast line like that. Really enjoy your show. Keep it up!

The industrial buildings with towers by the beach are electricity generating facilities. Most electricity generation is done by boiling water with natural gas, coal, or nuclear to create steam. The steam spins turbines to generate electricity. They are by the ocean because they need lots of water to create steam and for cooling. The one by El Porto is a natural gas fired steam electric generating facility.

There’s also a safety reason why these power plants are on the coasts, if there’s an explosion then half of the fallout gets taken by the sea.

Dear Koa. That is why there are so many power plants by the coast. All power plants need to cool down the steam and most of them use water to do so, which requires them to be near a water source (river, lake or ocean)

Regarding feeling lost because of too much freedom, I suggest you create a few barriers for yourself in your mind or place a few restrictions like say of time as having no barriers is not a good thing as it means you have no game and you need a game to play and a game must have barriers.

The “plant” is the Los Angeles water treatment plant. Right near there is a pipe that goes out two miles into the ocean and when it gets big we call that place “shitpipe” since that is where all the dirty water goes out to the ocean. The big boat you see in the background is an oil boat since there is a Chevron plant right behind the water treatment plant.

The plants and refineries were built and operational long before hanging out at the beach became any kind of a thing. In fact before the Beach Boys became a world wide phenomena, beach community real estate in the South Bay was dirt cheap. Many people lived there because they couldn't afford to live further inland where the jobs actually were. Then the real estate market went bonkers, "life style" became important, and they were priced out of their homes unable to afford the property taxes.
