As a person who spent 3 years in a place just like this, from age 15 in 1971 until I was 18 (drugs) I can tell you this movie is absolutely uncanny in its accuracy in every detail. I even escaped and went on a boat ride too (to Nantucket). Best movie ever made.

I have worked in nursing care facility for the elderly a few years ago and things have not significantly improved from this movie im afraid in the overall care of people who are losing their minds & preception of reality. In a sense those facilities are institutions for people who can longer cope in the outside world by themselves and are housed there out of sight and out of the general public mind. Hogeway method seems to be the best way to go in dealing with people with mental issues but it is expensive and requires lots of resources.

@mattfoley60825 жыл бұрын
Reading these replies makes me want to cry. I really feel for anyone with mental illness or dementia or Alzheimers. My elderly mother spent a few weeks recovering in the skilled nursing wing of her continuing care facility (she was semi-independent the rest of the time) and when I visited her it was very hard not to feel sad and depressed for all the residents with dementia. Alzheimers is one of the most terrible diseases there is. My mom was fine mentally and I know it must've been horrible for her being around that. I sometimes lay awake at night getting anxiety thinking about what I will do if I ever become dependent like those poor people. I'm 57 and starting to think about getting old.

The scene is memorable for not only being the beginning of bringing Chief out of his shell, but for being the beginning of Ratched's realization that McMurphy poses a very real threat to her authority. He's succeeding just by the force of his spirit where she, in spite of all her formal education, has failed, and she does not like it one little bit.

The Chief has icharisma. Native Amercians were extremely popular with German boys from 1880s til 1980s. We had an author named Karl May who wrote best selling books about deep friends ip between German immigrant Old Shatterhand and Apache Chief Winnetou. For me as a boy it was the highlight of my childhood in the 1970s to see them both in the Winnetou movies. It left forever the value of true friendship imprinted in my soul....

This is a 100% performance by Nicholson. Look at this scene. After the orderly tries to discourage him from talking to the Chief, he retorts, and when he looks back at Chief he gives an incredulous shake of the head as if to blow him off. Like one of the guys who is supposed to be in charge of the "crazies" is crazy himself because he just expects so little of them. What a performance.

When I saw this movie the first time, I thought this is cool. Nicholsen is a cool man and he would have no problem to talk himself out of this awful place. But als longer the film progresses you get a slight idea he will never leave it. A mayor drop down! (this was when I was eight years old; I've seen the movie one time again and this was the last time when I studied arts) This scene with the chief and the basket ball is very important for the whole set-up. For the chief McMurphy begins to be someone he can trust. All the things McMurphy says are valuable and are useful to be done. In the end (when McMurphy is dead) the Chief throws the big stone through the window from whom McMurphy said it is possible to move it if you have the will to do so.
