To everyone talking about the struggle of using the bathroom: they didn’t have toilets or panties, so ladies just put a pot under their skirts, it was actually quite easy. For those wondering about summer: they didn’t have sunscreen so lots of clothes helped them, on really hot or ‘saltry’ says they just stayed in, there was no industrial heat so again they were quite alright

Illegal slavery Just where we went wrong "Vintage fashion not vintage values" I know, but people like to diss modern clothes when they see "the pretties" _too_ much. Bringing the other option down is hardly a compliment. 100 years later you have choices. You can still dress this way and only the tiny minority actually commits to that. You can pick any period you want too. Why don't you put your money where your mouth is? (Op might actually be only implying that it's easier to dress today, which it is, but "modern style bad" attitude is very prevalent nonetheless. Modernity offers much more variation than you can describe or evaluate in a sentence)

It actually wasn't that exhausted to wear all those layers because unlike today with our clothes being made of synthetic plastic, the materials (usually linen, muslin, and cambric) were natural and light-colored. Women also used less petticoats and lighter stocking than they would have in colder months.

@noashaham54383 жыл бұрын
TheWin200000 true, but consider the fact that women who did not want to dress this way were forced to as a social rule. It’s not just men who “forced” women to dress this way, it was the whole society and tradition cues. And more commonly women of higher statuses, who had to keep up with their reputation.

Ugh. Let me explain in short- 1. No, men didn't force women to dress like that, even more than that, some ridiculed women's clothing. Women were the ones to set trends, getting inspiration from former periods (much like today) 2. It takes around 10-15 minutes to get ready, and since women were dressing like this since they around 12-14 years old (before puberty, you would usually wear a child version of these dresses, shorter and less constructed, since before puberty you don't really need support for the bust area) 3. Clothing were designed not just for fashion, but for comfort. Fabrics were natural, unlike today's polyester and spendex, so everything was breathable and you weren't really sweaty. Corsets were fitted for your body so they will fit comfortably, and were there for bust and back support, as well as giving you the current fashionable silhouette. And no, tightlacing wasn't common. No, you didn't need to remove any ribs. Yes, you can perfectly breath in corsets, they are quite comfortable, way more than bras. All the myths you've heard are wrong. Sincerely, a history enthusiast and a historical fashion wearer.
@rx500android3 жыл бұрын
@TheWin200000 nope, men didn't force women to dress like that, women were the trendsetters. Even more than that, some men often ridiculed women for their clothing, and made caricatures of them in newspapers to ridicule them. Men had trouble accepting the fact that garment-making and fashion design was a women-dominated industry, actually.

This is how most people draw/or create (for a show) 1890s fashion as, when in reality 1890s fashion was a mix of the 1850s, 1880s (of course), and the Georgian era.
