Once upon a time there was an exploit where building turrets on island would delete any biter which ran past, because a biter which couldn't reach its target would just get deleted. Wasn't that great because it didn't work for spitters, but was pretty good at guarding coastlines in the small biter era as a little landfill and turrets with no ammo could just delete all the biters coming along that route.

There's a third option for how the speedrunner community will handle it. The runs that use the free productivity bug will be invalidated when the bug is fixed. According to the speedrun rules, "Runs that used bugs that become fixed in later versions may be invalidated depending on the bug, on a case by case basis that anyone can open." This bug being fixed for 2.0 means that runs using this bug will likely be valid while the bug is around, but will be invalidated once the bug is fixed in 2.0.

Here's an update on how the speedrun community is handling it: Someone actually used the trick in a run. There's an ongoing vote for a rule update to decide whether they'll let the run enter the leaderboard or if they're going to ban the Hendricks trick, or somewhere in between.
@acrylique29762 ай бұрын
I always thought the only bugs in factorio are the biters.
@grzybooi2 ай бұрын
As a speedrunner, it's not that big of a problem. There already is a rule against bugs that get fixed in later versions. And with 2.0 around the corner, the leaderboards are likely to reset or change a lot anyway. As for application of the exploit, it possibly could be a major speedup in Wave Defense but it's still not clear if it's worth it. In Wave Defense you start with a silo but as it turns out you can't deconstruct it, so you have to craft a second one to do the exploit. (edit: Zaspar_ beat the world record by around 1 minute using this strategy) In any other category, it could possibly be used to do the silo with fewer parts (I think ~300 would be reasonable, so around 50% discount on rocket parts). But it would require large plan changes to be possibly worthwhile.

A faster strategy would be to put a yellow or blue chest next to the silo with an inserter putting the itens in the chest into the silo, put a roboport, so you go away, deconstruct > cancel deconstruct, the item will be put into the chest and into the silo again. About how to not lose the items, a clock made with circuit network to stop giving power to the silo right before the green bar finishes. There are a few ways to make the clock start at the right moment, maybe deconstructing something other than the silo would make the clock start, or maybe the inserter putting the item into the silo would start the clock. Something using these ideas would work, there are a lot of options.

Cool find! Something tells me this probably wouldn't help speed-running a terrific amount, if at all, even if the exploit hadn't been instantly patched by devs. Having to babysit the rocket silo is very limiting and this trick is slower than just putting the required ingredients into the rocket. Maybe if the gap between getting your initial set of rocket ingredients and then scaling up production to a full rocket was big enough this could matter, but I still doubt it.

Hm... it should provide an advantage in multiplayer speedruns, because one person could conceivably "jump-start" rocket production (or perhaps utility science) before there are enough resources to run the corresponding factories consistently. With good positioning and fast clicking (or clicking scripts), it should also be possible to manage 2 or 3 factories simultaneously. I would not expect it to help the total time by more than 1%, perhaps 2% at the utmost, but still... that would be enough to matter for speedruns. It could also make sense for the science labs themselves, perhaps, if you somehow manage to use this on several of them simultanesously.

The main disadvantage of this strategy is that it takes 3-4x as long to launch a rocket, and in any% that's a deal breaker regardless of how much time it saves.
