Man, I thought getting into 40K was intimidating. ASL is on another level! and there are a lot of levels in between.
@GPlewright2 жыл бұрын
40K requires you to build and paint models, buy the rules and codexes (every few years they are updated as well) and you need to build terrain too. Also in 40K all the stats for the troops and their weapons are written in the books. In the ASL starter kit you get three whole armies, no modelling and painting needed. I think in some ways ASL could be easier?

I remember playing the Avalon Hill version of Squad Leader. Great game and very detailed. This review is tempting me to buy this product.

No better way to start than the Starter Kits. HIGHLY recommended. That's the way I am going. Thanks for the comment, Fed. Take care. ~Fritz

C'mon man, the SK rules in SK#1 is like 8 pages. 🤣

To be fair, when I made this comment 4 years ago ASLSK1 was my first ever real war game. It WAS overwhelming at the time but I've since gotten into GBOH, ASL, World in Flames, Paths of Glory and a few more. I would kill for another 8-page wargame now haha@@TheToekutter

SL player since 1977, the best WW2 Infantry Squad level board game ever design, credited to John Hill (RIP). Start simple, you don't have to use every toy in the game system. The very best system is to find the 8 steps to SL. Using board 1 and a minimum of 3 MMC (squad) and 1 leader. The ASL scenario "The Front in Flames" is the perfect instructional way to teach and recruit new players. If you can find a intermediate level or experienced player you will learn faster.

I bought SK1 a couple months ago but have yet to do more than thumb through it, look at the counters and such... so this is further encouragement.

SK's are THE best way to get into ASL today. If you then get the desire to dive deeper after 1 or 2 SK's, snag a binder of rules and Beyond Valor and just go ham. From there I'd recommend finding an updated edition of Yanks 3a and then either Rising Sun, Doomed Battalions, or For King and Country depending on which Theaters interest you more.

Buy the Pocket Edition of the rules as the ASL rule book is not available from MMP, but the Pocket edition does not have Chapter H. They (MMP) are planning to reprint the ASL rulebook but who knows when. You can get it online but at very high prices.

Hey Fritz, love the talk about ASL and SK. I'm currently playing solo and am about halfway through SK2. I've also started playing on Vassal vs live opponent and have just finished scenario 1 from SK1. I'm interested in finding more online opponents. If you're interested in a regular opponent for ASL or GBACW (I just bought Death Valley and have never played any before) on the Vassal program you can hit me up for a game sometime. This goes for anyone else wanting to learn ASLSK too.

Thanks. I agree with your comments, great way to get into ASL, or even jump to SL if you like ASLSK. SL is still great, paired with Iron Cross and your good to go, and no rule brick to learn.

Only prob going from ASLSK to SL is un-learning some ASL mechanics like Defensive fire.

If you get the latest edition of the RB there is a boot camp chapter. I found it easier to learn from than the SKs IMO.
@Forge_n_Brush5 жыл бұрын
That's true - and fair. I have to say, however, the SK series gives you a self-contained, easily accessible game to guide you along. The sheer size of the RB puts a lot of people off. In the end, it all depends on what you are looking for, and how you are approaching the system. Thanks for the feedback, Epic. Much appreciated. :) ~Fritz
@StewsReplay5 жыл бұрын
In all actuality, you pretty much use only about 20% of the RB. Even the infantry section, besides the core infantry rules, which is pretty much about 20 pages, the rest may not even come into play. If you play only infantry, Chaps A and B only and again, only boys and pieces

The more you play the funner it is. Once you get into the full game it gets really interesting. I've been playing ASL since 1986 with no gaps. As you play you will be constantly referencing the rules and that is how you learn. ASL is a blast and I will be playing forever.

The more you play, the faster you learn and those that learn the rules usually win the game. "The man or won't read, is worse than the man who can't read"

Going though some of your old videos... I used to have old SQ with ALL the addons... man I wish I still had them. I was watching another channel that talked about MMP... got curious on how to get back into it.

Hi, 28mm RPG. Highly recommend the starter kits. You really can't go wrong with these. Each set is focused on some particular aspect of WWII warfare, working from basic infantry, up through guns, tanks, afvs, Pacific, etc. Worth getting if you want to get back into it - which is what I did. :) Thanks for the feedback. ~Fritz
