Thank you for this! I’ve been nervous about the whole process (still am a little bit). I’ve been a Behavior Interventionist for 7 years and have decided I want to switch to SLP!

Congrats Haley! I’m located in Oklahoma and am about to graduate from the only SLPA program in Oklahoma in May! The program is 2 years long which means we get our associate’s degree and are able to get an SLPA job without a bachelor’s degree. For our clinical hours, we had to have 50 direct and 50 indirect for 2 semesters. It’s so cool to hear how every state is different for SLPAs!

I have a degree in Early Childhood Education & special intervention. I was an elementary teacher for 3 years and decided it’s not for me. I have started to explore the option of being an SLP. However, the thought of not being able to get into grad school is terrifying 😳

I would try not to think about it that way! One step at a time. If you’re really interested in the career you can make it happen!!! Plus you’ve already got a great background for SLP. We’re rooting for ya! 💕

I was a kindergarten teacher for 3 years. I felt I was missing something and I returned to school. Best choice I ever made! I finished my leveling courses and am currently waiting for my SLPA license. I will be applying for grad school soon as well. You can do it!!

would you recommend doing volunteer work during your undergrad? would this volunteer work really make an impact when applying to grad school?

In my opinion, the most important impact is your gpa! If your gpa is good, then volunteer/leadership work that relates to the speech therapy field can be helpful and add to your application. Also any internships or observation hours are great to add as well. 😊

Yes...GPA bars most individuals...but experiences do matter, but don't let them affect your GPA negatively...you can always voulteer after your degree...your GPA is your GPA
