@@BornToRant I'd highly recommend Metaphor: ReFantazio. It's by Atlas, the guys that make Persona. It's their latest game, a new IP that offers the pinnacle of story telling and gameplay that they've built up over the many years working on the Persona and Megami Tensei series, yet it's a totally new IP and I think the best stepping stone into Atlas RPGs. It was a game of the year nominee (2024) and a massive critical success.

If you do get a PS5, i highly recommend the Yakuza series. The first 6 or so are brawlers and the most recent ones are turn based. They have a very great story and TONS of stuff to do. They also have some of the best and funniest side quests in gaming. Now the remake of the original, Kiwami is on switch and is the only one so far, but if you do get a Playstation in the future 0 would be the way to go as it's a prequel and serves a good spot to meet some of the characters you would in Kiwami Also, as someone who has been gaming about 21 years out of the 26 I've been alive, Yakuza 0 is truly one of the best stories I've ever experienced.
@ssjbargainsale20 күн бұрын
I second this, just be aware that Kiwami 1 and 2 are remakes of the first 2 games on the ps2. Kiwami 1 in particular is not great. Its almost a port of the original with the Y0 engine. In my opinion, is the weakest game in the series, so going from 0 (which is arguably the best in the series) to 1 might be rough. And since Kiwami 2 came out quite recently compared to the rest, going from 2 to 3 will be going from a late ps4 game to an early ps3 one. That being said, its an incredibly fun series all the way through

@Mr_Flopp-c8j8 күн бұрын
@QuinnJustCantWin yep, i've played 2 two times, and only on the second time i've noticed that it wasn't a bad game. It's the comical relief and the anime tropes that made the experience a little iffy on the first time. What made my second playthrough better was chuggaaconroy's guide on Xeno 2. It made the experience 300% better by buying and eating the cake in argentum (i think) and by flicking the analog stick after every auto attack to boost the speed in which you can use the arts. And of course, on the second time, i finally decided to play with japanese voices. The english voice for Rex just didn't mesh well with the character, and some other characters' voices were also strange. By the way, i still prefer Xeno X over 2.

Another franchise that is peak, is the Trails Series. Even though not all of them are on switch, any 10+ years old laptop can run the ones that are not on switch with no problems. All 13 games are interconnected, but it doesn't mean that you gotta play them in order. You can start at the beginning of any arc, being respectively Trails in the Sky trilogy (Liberl Arc), Trails from zero (Crossbell duology), Trails of Cold Steel quadrilogy (Erebonia Arc), or the most recent arc, being Trails through Daybreak (Calvard Arc). This series has some pretty varied stories and its focus is in the world building. In the Sky trilogy you play as junior members from the bracers guild. This guild's objective is to help and prioritize the citizens above all else, and its story is an emotional roller coaster. Once you start, there's no coming back. It's available on PSP and PC (I recommend the PC version, because it has fast forward up to 4 times speed). To fully appreciate the Sky trilogy, there is a voice mod for PC, that is japanese only that really makes the experience special. Even if you don't understand the language, you can get the gist of it with their tone of voice and character portraits. The Crossbell duology you play as detectives from an autonomous state in which they're trying to make things right and put an end to the corruption between the police, government and mafia. It's available on Switch, PSP, PS4 and PC, and also has fast forward (even on switch). In Cold Steel you play as students from a military academy (located at an Aristocratic Monarchy), in which they go around the country to learn first hand about the systematic issue between aristocracy and populace. I started with this arc and it hooked me like no other franchise. I've finished all 13 games last month (it took me around 7 months to play through all of them [i didn't exclusively play only them through out this time, i've also played other games]). Start with the game that you like the sinopsis better. This arc clicked with me, because I like the anime tropes present on it. All the 4 games are available on PC and PS4. Switch only has the 3rd and 4th games. In Daybreak you play as Sprigans (mercenaries), that work in the grey zone (barely legal) and since they're not limited by conventional rules, they can act on things that bracers cannot. This game is more violent than previous arcs and is also the most interesting gameplay wise, since it is possible to change between turn based and action at any time. This is the one that has less annoying anime tropes for people new to modern JRPGs. It's available on Switch, PC and Playstations. The Trails series lore and plot revolves around the rapid evolution of technology that was made in a few decades. Imagine a medieval world that went straight to the industrial revolution and then to modern time technology in a real short span of time. They've invented devices powered by sepith, an equivalent to materia/mako from FF7. They've invented aircrafts in less than 10 years after the train, but cars and bikes were invented much later, or modern day appliances took a lot of time to be adopted by the public, because they were really skeptical, since everything that was sepith powered by that point was used for war. While talking to NPCs, you'll get to know them and also understand the world and country that you're in. You'll see the resistance some people have towards the technologies or the dependency that they have developed for it. You'll feel the anxiety that people have towards the rapid technologycal advancements, the fear of what the neighboring countries will do with it and the hunger that they have for territorial expansion, or even internal conflicts that they face. Think of this series as the MCU Avengers of JRPGs. This series is just too wonderfull. I've never been this passionate about a game franchise like this before. Sorry that i couldn't keep it concise or for the times that I didn't make sense (english isn't my native tongue).

It's awesome to see someone getting into this hobby for the first time and exploring the different genres. I hope you have a lot of fun... Some games to consider for your switch: Super Mario 3D World + Bowsers Fury - This is probably the best entry point for 3D platforming there is and it's a classic. A favourite genre of mine. It is story-light. Bayonetta - A good example of the spectacle fighter genre, one you've not tried yet. I recommend it. Xenoblade Chronicles - For someone who likes Final Fantasy X, this will feel like a great evolution to that genre. Red Dead Redemption - This is a great game. Fantastic story, great atmosphere, awesome gameplay. If you're enjoying The Witcher 3, this will likely have a similar appeal and it runs great on the Switch. Astral Chain - Similar play style to Bayonetta but with an almost anime like way of storytelling which you may enjoy. Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak - This has extremely deep gameplay with great customisation and a lot of imaginative monster designs. A good entry in a massively popular series. Code Vein - Good action RPG with a fantasy dystopian story that you may vibe well with. Like an edgier Final Fantasy with real time action. Persona 5 Royal - Stylistic turn-based RPG like Final Fantasy, but with slice-of-life drama storylines that feel like a TV show at times. Likely a good fit for you. I hope this helps. I've subscribed. I look forward to seeing more from you. For a guy who's been gaming for over 35 years, it's fascinating to see your perspective.

There's a massive amount of great games for you to discover for the first time. Seems like you're into the storytelling of games so I have a couple of suggestions: Persona 5 - Persona is a series where you don't need to play any previous entries, they're all their own self contained stories with a couple of recurring entities, similar to final fantasy in that regard but the story is more about a school kid and your relationships with others, the themes can get quite dark. Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3 - The first game is a bit of a slog in terms of gameplay but the series as a whole is another game about your relationships with crew members and the choices you make having true consequences. Without spoiling, the third game was a bit of a letdown with the ending but the journey is well worth the ride regardless of the destination. Nier Automata - Now this might be one of the best games ever made from both a storytelling perspective and also how that storytelling weaves into the gameplay itself. I don't want to spoil anything about it so all I'll say is keep playing until ending E. This game is an absolute MUST for anyone that loves storytelling in games. Nier Replicant - Another in the Nier series and some of the lore weaves into the story of Automata but they are still quite self contained stories. If you like Automata then this is another that's worth playing I love games as a form of storytelling, it's such a unique way of presenting a story or deeper themes and the fact that it's an interactive medium makes for some truly unique ways of delivering an artistic vision.

Hi- Fi Rush - such an amazing game, its a super fun rythm/platformer/beat em up, its an extremely colorful game and I think that we can all use a bit of that in a day and age where games tend to be more muddy/ serious looking.

@BornToRant I’ll only recommend games that I know are on the switch and run decently, since that’s your preferred platform. For games with great writing: Disco Elysium, Undertale, In Stars and Time, SpiritFarer, CrossCode, and Hades For arcadey or pickup and play games: Balatro, Slay the Spire, Enter the Gungeon, Vampire Survivors For games that are great but require the caveat that they are Pretty Hard: Celeste, Katana Zero, Hyper Light Drifter, Blasphemous, Hollow Knight

Ah yes... Final Fantasy X is a gem 💜, it's probably my favorite final fantasy. Since you enjoy games with a lot of story, if I may leave a suggestion: consider playing Metaphor, or some of the Persona games or the Xenoblade series (Specially Xenoblade 3, the story is so beautiful and it's available on switch) or Final Fantasy XVI :) Nice video. If you get a PS5, I suggest trying Final Fantasy XIV for your first online game. The community is very friendly. It's very very low pressure. It's also a bit dull at the front end but at least you don't have to commit any money until you're like 200+ hours in.

This is awesome to watch. Super interesting seeing the different opinions too. Makes me wonder how much is influenced by you being less engrossed in gaming. Final Fantasy 7 is one of my all time favorites, and it was not a childhood game for me. I've only started FFX, I really need to continue it. I think I prefer Arkham Asylum over City mostly because of nostalgia and its digestible size. My favorite of all time is Super Metroid. It is on the Switch Online game library. It is not known for its writing per se, but it's filled with environmental storytelling, exploration, lore, and tons of atmosphere. I don't know if it would be up your alley or not, but I'd love if you'd try it.

I LOVE story rich games but also appreciate a break from them from time to time. If you're ever looking for a game with effectively perfect gameplay mechanics I highly recommend picking up Mario Odyssey. I was never a big Mario guy but damn that game is superb, highly polished and incredibly fun from beggining to it's climactic end.

Should you get a ps5, remember that also opens up nearly the entire ps4 library as well. And since you love Final Fantasy X so much, I have to recommend The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 1-4. It's like sitting down with an amazing book that you can play. But it's a massive time commitment as each game is at least 80 hours long, and they have to be played in order. But that's 80 hours of rich characters, rich storytelling, and rich world buidling. Highly recommended. Oh, and look into the games of Yoko Taro, and Hideo Kojima as well. They are two of the best game directors around.
@herb211018 күн бұрын
Since you seem to be very interested in the stories that games tell, I thought I could recommend some games that I think tell stories in ways only videogames can: 1. Outer Wilds This is my personal favorite game of all time, and the way it tells its story is very non-traditional. I can't say too much about it since it is very VERY spoiler-sensitive. But if you enjoy space travel and non-linear storytelling, then definitely give it a try. length: 16-20 hours 2. Undertale Undertale will probably be a hit or miss, especially since its story-telling relies on the subversion of tropes in videogame story-telling, so you may want to wait until you're more familiar with games before you play it. But it's one of my favorite games, and could be a nice light-hearted break from the more gritty, serious, cinematic games. length: 7-21 hours 3. Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild To be completely honest, the "main story" of this game is not particularly good or interesting (its not bad, just ok), however, what I think the game does well is telling the story of an entire land through its environment. Also, if you're not familiar with open-world games, this is easily my highest recommendation for an introduction to them. length: 50-200 hours 4. Disco Elysium In my opinion, this is easily the most well-written game ever made. However, the moment-to-moment gameplay might scare some people away as it is mostly comprised of lengthy conversations with the various NPC's in the world. Thankfully though, the vast majority of it is accompanied by incredible voice acting (make sure to get the "Final Cut" version if you want the full voice-over). length: 20-30 hours As a bonus, I would also recommend a game I played recently called "Mouthwashing." It's basically a psychological thriller short-film in the form of a ps2 style horror game. The game is pretty short (like 2 hours total), but the story leaves you with a lot to think about.

id recommend a few indie games if you most like stories, more often then not the driving factor of indie is the story, games like undertale, sea of stars, limbo, ori and the blind forest, hollow knight, nin souls, and lisa the painful are my big recommendations (lisa the painful should have an asterisk for hard topics like parental abuse)... if i had to pick one of those over the rest... it would be very hard to choose between two... undertale and sea of stars both made me cry in a very good way...

Hi ! Great video, it's really cool to see you appreciate good games :3 Since you're on the Switch i would suggest you the Xenoblade Chronicles trilogy, great J-RPGs with an amazing story, and their gameplay is like FF XII. The second opus can be a bit tidious on the pace tho. You also should give a try to Zelda BOTW, and Zelda TOTK which is the "sequel", that made improvements on all aspects. Zelda games have simple stories tho, with some deep themes when you read beetween the lines, and they have good visual and environmental story-telling. Given your love for David Lynch and Alan Wake, this might've been recommended already, but I HIGHLY encourage you to give Deadly Premonition a chance. There's a Nintendo Switch port called Deadly Premonition Origins, which I hear is a solid version of the game. It's a bizarre, surreal title that tells a really compelling story in a very Twin Peaks inspired town. Everyone in town is strange and the main character feels like Agent Dale Cooper's equally nutty cousin going on a similar adventure. It might feel a bit derivative based on that description and it kind of is, but it also manages to be unique and interesting in its own way. I don't want to bombard you with a bunch of recommendations, so I'll just leave it at Deadly Premonition, I really think you'll enjoy how off beat, strange, yet charming and endearing the game is.

My advice for 2 and 3: go ahead and spring for the DLC straight away; you're definitely going to want to play the new story expansions after each main game anyway, so you might as well benefit from the bonus resources and costumes and such in the main game that come with buying the DLC.

Awesome video! I had to stop at FFX though because I’m playing it and don’t want any spoilers. 😁

Whenever you get your hands on a PS5 I think you'd love God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok. They're incredible examples of games with stellar gameplay and storytelling

@@BornToRant When it comes to storytelling in games, Playstation exclusives definitely have some of the best. Those two are must-plays, but I would also recommend Horizon Zero Dawn, the Uncharted series, Ghost of Tsushima, and Detroit Become Human. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Alan Wake 2 though, never played the first but adored the sequel
