This is amazing. I have never felt more encouraged and to excited get into photography! At the start of the pandemic I'd been gifted an old Canon EOS 20D and fell in love with photo. Decided to buy a brand new Sony a6600. I often regret the purchase: this "new" camera was less responsive, less tactile, and the EVF less clear... and more importantly I have less money and less opportunity to acquire new gear because it's so prohibitively expensive. It's given me some of my proudest moments but I hate using it. Excited to explore this world older, cameras. But I am already seeing the hands of capitalism gripping this hobby and community as prices begin to rise, scalpers begin to scalp, and people start to realize what they have. But I'm still so excited and hope that things stay reasonable.

Steve's digicams used to be the best site for comparing cameras with unedited images. Canon G or S model cameras from 3 to like 7 megapixels that have a CCD sensor look close to film for a digicam. At least that has been my experience after trying about 60 digital cameras.

Haha we have such similar browsing habits. Pro-tip: with shutterdial you can browse flickr narrowing down on focal lengths and shutter speeds, which can be very useful to deduce lenses. Glad to watch your videos. I started follow you from Instagram. I love small old basic digital cameras. I dismissed it because I thought that my smartphone was enough for casual shooting. I was wrong, the smartphone is better only in low light, but even that tiny Sony WX-something camera with its tiny sensor gives better results in overall image rendition, and you can process a bit more in Lightroom, not so much as if were raw files, but enough to get a good photography. I regret having sold my point and shoot cameras. Definitely I will buy some little pocket friendly old digital cameras. They are perfect to carry on all the time. Even my M50 is bulky from everyday standpoint.

How much of the return to vintage cameras is being driven by the utter hopelessness of average photo enthusiast being able to keep up with the pace and expense of current high end camera releases? I feel a certain amount of "screw it...I'm done with the gear chasing rat race" sentiment is in play. To that end, I was going back through my photos and was shocked to find that a disproportionate number of the photos I really liked for their sharpness, color rendering, and generally appealing feel were taken with my Konica Minolta 5d and the kit lens in good light. So much so that, since the 5d bit the dust years ago, I felt compelled to join the vintage camera rush and buy a 7d and get some more use out of my drawer full of vintage Minolta glass.

Sadly Lightroom 5 (the version I use) cannot handle xmp files. I think the only way to do this in this version is to save as a Preset which then saves as a .lrtemplate and contains all the edits made. Can anyone explain what CCD sensors do that is so great? If I use the X-E1 on classic crome or X-A10 on claasic crome, what do I get that is not better than sony a 290, 390 or Nikon D200?
@michaelbell75 Жыл бұрын
The early CCD sensors in the first 5-6 years of the digital camera age were designed to emulate film as these companies tried to get film shooters to switch over to digital. So many of the Canon and Fuji digicams from this era have a very filmic look to them, especially because of their low megapixel count and softer lenses. Your X-E1's sensor (not to mention the modern lens you are using) is far too sharp with too much resolution to pull off a convincing film look. It's always going to look like a digital photo no matter what recipe or preset you use. Shoot something like a 4 megapixel Canon Powershot G2 alongside youre X-E1 and you'll see the difference instantly when looking thru the photos on your computer. Thats is assuming you have a good deal of experience with film cameras and know the look.

@@jan-martinulvag1962 I’ve owned 5 Fuji X trans cameras and currently own 9 Fuji cameras between instant film and digital. Ive tried a lot more than you have and played with dozens of settings. resolution has everything to do with it. Scan a 35mm negative, even at something like 1200dpi and you will see there is only so much detail in it. A 16mp file from an X-E1 produces FAR more detail and will resolve much better because of the modern optics in the lens. This is why people who want a more filmic look use things like mist filters to soften their photos. It’s clear you weren’t looking for an answer and you don’t know much about film or photography in general. Bye.

Love your videos Ali. Just wondering how often you come across cameras with hot pixels? And how you deal with them?
@OneMonthTwoCameras2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Zia! I would say all of my older cameras have hot pixels. They don't bother me but are exacerbated at night in long exposure type photography. If they really are obtrusive, I just clone them out, save it as a preset and then apply to all future images since the hot pixels don't move.

I find it somewhat comical that people want to discover old digicams when I've been shooting with them since they were new (in my case 1990s), and I have hundreds of them. You're mistaken about Photoshop not being used on early digital photos, there have been myriad of image editing programs since the dawn of both digital photography and digitized film, with some early digital cameras it was the only way to convert their RAW files into JPEGs as many early digital cameras could not even shoot JPEGs. Unless you are shooting commercially my advise is to forget about "image quality" which is entirely subjective and concentrate on becoming a better photographer. A few of my favorite photos were shot on floppy discs with a Mavica.
