Getting It Back: The Story of Cymande
They are the unsung heroes of hip hop, disco and a host of other genres, whose message of peace, love and funk sailed beyond Britain's shores and helped shape music for five decades. Long after they stopped playing, the music played on, so they returned to play some more.
In the racially turbulent UK of the early 70s, a group of black musicians came together in South London with a common love of rhythms and a message of peace. Cymande - with the dove as their symbol - combined jazz, funk, soul and Caribbean grooves to form a unique sound. Despite success in the USA they faced indifference in their native Britain, becoming disillusioned and disbanding. But the music lived on, as new generations of artists imbibed and reworked their pioneering sounds in fresh ways. From Soul II Soul to De La Soul, MC Solaar to The Fugees, the Dove had spread Cymande's message far and wide, prompting their return after forty years. This is their story.

As a very young kid I remember seeing a guy who would carry this album under his arm everywhere he went, the cover at the time blew my mind, he was kind enough to allow me to look at the artwork. I saw it many years later in a 2nd hand record store and bought it. It is such an influential record.

it's funny, I found Cymande just before khruangbin back in 2016. pretty much a week apart from each other. I picked up the album at a goodwill because it reminded me of Santana's old record cover with the black and white lion. dove was this lost epic to me when I heard it the first time.

Congratulations Tim MacKenzie-Smith & thank you for making this documentary! Cymande’s influence on hip hop and house music is immeasurable. The very creation and existence of this group is a once in a lifetime occurrence.. Much like hip hop, this incredible music could have only come from one place & at one time in this human history. Big up all involved in the production of this documentary and especially to the members of the band. Although, I personally know many that would agree with me.. I can only speak for myself.. 1992 im at college in Birmingham - some older hippie type on my course give me a mix tape full of rare groove and shit, just had the message written on one side?? fastforward to 1994 im in Flopp Records Sheffield and im looking at Cymande - The best of, and one track is called the message -and i think to myself i wonder if this record has 1 or 2 tracks that were on that tape?? i buy the record for a £5, get home and yes it was the LP i was looking for.... Bar, Dove and the message were all on the tape, ive been a big fan of these guys ever sice and ive told as many people about them as i can over the years... FBI and Leafhound are trested the same another amazing lost band

The band was formed in London in 1971. Active in the 1970s, the group released four albums between 1972 and 1981. It was composed of eight members, all from the West Indies (Jamaica, Guyana, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines). They decide, influenced by the English progressive rock, to create a music that is a mixture of everything that sounds Afro-Rock. They invent a term to define their style: the «Nyah-Rock». Although their compositions are strongly tinged with funk, the band has always been inspired by the Rastafari movement. In 2015, another album comes out, "A simple act of faith", a last sword blow in the water? No, a new one will be released in 2025, of which you can already find the first excerpt, "Chasing An Empty Dream"
