Getting lost in the Brecon Beacons | Ruins and waterfalls at Clydach Gorge

In this video, we went to clydach gorge in the brecon beacons national park, south wales to search for the clydach limeworks, but not everything went to plan...
Clydach gorge is full of hints of its industrial past, and so we decided to in search of an unusual lime kiln, which has a staircase leading through the middle of it. Limeworks and quarries operated here from 1794 to 1962, before being closed and left to nature. You can find lots of lime kilns and iron works slowly being taken over by nature, as well as waterfalls and plunge pools to potentially wild swim in!

I think Lime is created by baking chalk or limestone in very hot temperatures then crushing the ash down to powder. At least that is the case in the chalklands.

Exactly! Getting lost is all part of the fun, especially afterwards when you can appreciate it more 😂 Apparently the spooky staircase is quite rare in that it doesn't appear in many lime kilns, though I don't know much about lime kilns so don't quote me on that! 😂

Lol... I was laughing when you got to the viaduct and mentioned the kilns and then ventured upstream. Being a local (I have done a few videos from the gorge) I knew what you were looking for. It's a place I would recommend you returning to as ther is lots of other bits in there to see... the main part of the Iron Works is at the bottom of the gorge just below the village. Have a look for the Gellifelen tunnels - one which you can walk through (take a torch !!) Where you parjked head in the opposite direction to find a 2nd viaduct and the tunnels are next to it. regards Alan

That's for sure, the history is fascinating. But the weird stairs were the highlight! It's apparently quite unusual, but I couldn't tell you why, unfortunately the wild guide didn't stretch that far!

Hello! Welcome to our neck of the woods! I think it was used as an exterior coating for buildings to protect them? But to be honest I haven't done much research on it 😂 If it were warmer I might have gone for a dip in the plunge pool, but it was freezing!

Making lime is easy, all they had to do is burn the limestone that is all around you here in the kilns till it turns into a powder, then they chuck this into the molten iron ore, this acts as a flux to bring the slag to the surface. This is then pulled off when everything is still molten and dumped, well anywhere really. Re the 'Great white tip' near Merthyr Tydfil.
