I liked the methode of only starting with a thin layer when taking off a rolag. That is a new-to-me method, and makes a whole lot of sense. Thank you for showcasing it.

Out of all the carding vids I've seen,not 1 person has said that the 2 drums shouldn't be touching each other. I always end up with more fleece on the little drum. I hope this is what I've been doing wrong. I'm currently carding Alpaca and it's such a pain having to clean off the little drum all the time.
@hilltop-cloud2 жыл бұрын
In part it depends on the make of the carder, but on the ones that are like this in style there should be a very, very small gap. Alternatively it's because the alpaca you're carding is too fine for the teeth per inch on your carder. There's also no reason not to just let the licker in fill up and stay that way, no need to clean until you're changing the style of fibre you're using.

I have a different style of teeth on my carder and the same is true for mine as well; the teeth should almost touch but not actually. Also different fibers may require more or less spacing. Good luck. I love drum carding and have been able to achieve many different results. Make sure you're not putting too much fiber on as well. I hope you learn to love it too!

Thanks so much Katie. Such a lot of great tips. I have only used my drum carder for blending batts and roving as I love fine worsted spinning. I think I will try and make some rolags and get to grips with long draw woollen spinning after watching this ❤️

So. Much. Awesome. Info! I've learned so much from just one video. I've been doing everything wrong haha. I was wondering why my Batts come off my drum feeling like a quilt 😂. I would pull it off the drum and it would like quintuple in size. I probably could've felted it and it would've been a twin sized blanket lol. I also noticed, your Batts don't have the little loops on the back of it from the tines. Is that because I'm putting too much on my drum? I normally use a packing brush and I'm thinking that could have something to do with it as well.
@hilltop-cloud Жыл бұрын
I suspect it's due to the way you're feeding your fibre on to the licker in, if you rewatch the video I think I do spend a bit of time discussing how to prepare the fibre before it goes on to the drums to give you the smoothest possible results. I always use a packer brush, and that won't cause the loops.
