Thank you for calling out Zero’s repairability problem with the motor encoder on the pre-Gen3 bikes. They could fix this design issue, but seem unwilling. They could also make their bikes easier to diagnose and repair, but also seem unwilling. The Gen3 models fixed the hardware design issue, but sacrificed even more by locking down the platform so much that only Zero employees can remotely diagnose and service the bikes, which makes it impossible to reasonably own the bikes outside of the range of a dealer with a current service contract. Zero is in the wrong here and they deserve strong criticism. I believe they hurt the value and marketability of their own products by doing this in the long term. Many owners sour on Zero after a while for this reason.
@NewZeroland2 жыл бұрын
Brian! Thanks so much for your input. I was told that Zero thinks bikes are having problems because the owners keep modifying them (aftermarket chargers, mostly), so one way to prevent that was to make the code harder to read. If someone can decipher the Cypher, though.. that could shift power back to the riders!
@BrianTRice772 жыл бұрын
They think the aftermarket charger situation happened in a vacuum, and they're right: They created that vacuum. And then they didn't help the aftermarket do the right thing, nor did they make their electrical system sufficiently robust to tolerate environmental or third-party issues. They can externalize blame, but they have to accept some of it, too. They are not accepting any blame.

That might be their excuse now, but I had the same customer experience with a gen 1 bike with a motor that went bad 1000 miles in. They are acting the same now as they did 10 years ago. Lots of emails, that all lacked any substance. Then eventually ghosted. They just stop replying.

Late reply, the reason the custom DCF on the sevcon didn't work with the stock MBB is because the CAN messages weren't set up correctly on the SEVCON. There are 5 TPDO, transmitted messages that the controller sends out, and 1 RPDO, that the controller receives. If these aren't mapped to the correct messages the the MBB won't have any idea what is going on. Also, the pinouts could be setup wrong on the controller configuration, I think they changed in 2015 from 2014. Also, if that motor is from a 2016 or newer bike then the motor tuning parameters are different as it is an interior permanent magnet motor, not a surface permanent magnet motor from 2015 and prior. So you may still be missing out on some power with the bike and possibly have some control loop instability, ie, more heat in the motor and controller for a given power. I'm working on building a can DBC decoding file for the forum right now so you could use a piece of software called SavvyCan and your choice of socketcan CANBus adapter to read the can bus on the bike. Also, I have seen the tool they use to set the encoder at the dealership and it is just a stripped down version of the DVT software. The sevcon only talks CANOpen so to do the encoder alignment you actually don't need to have the DVT software, you just do a coast down trace and plot some motor parameters on excel, then use any cheap can bus tool and write your encoder offset to the correct memory register on the sevcon. I'm working on this now and hope to have a useable tool to the electricmotorcycle forum in a month or so.

Please keep in mind that you will need to really watch the motor temps. The SR was a beefed up S. They can increase the power, but what they had to do to enable the motor to work in real world stresses was to make it handle the increased heat. By bumping up the power you will most likely heat stress the motor break it in a permanent way. Ie the epoxy for the magnets may fail. Just my opinion. Thanks again for posting.

Congratulations, but a question the 2015 SR controller is 600A so even with 66kw motor how can u generate more power if the controller is the same? If the motor is more powerful, but it heat dissipation is the same it means the motor temperature will get higher faster. Zero are highlighting in the manual the SR can has a attainable speed of 137 kmh. Motor overheating is the limitation. Can the refurbished motor overcome that?
@BrianTRice772 жыл бұрын
Heat will be proportional to the power/current delivered, so the motor will only heat up as much as the operator exercises it. It would be interesting to know what the rating is of the controller that was delivered to Sam. Newer Gen4 Size 6 controllers have higher current ratings than the 600A so could do this. On the other hand, the newer IPM motors should also produce less heat and emit it better, so I expect they can tolerate a higher limit, at least for short periods.

I think the idea behind using a carbon wrapped shaft is to combat heat, like what Tesla did in the Plaid motors. My old SR motor heated up really quick, and Zero's system limits the power to protect it. There are way more features you can tune in that software than I understand, and way more power to get out of the motor and controller than what Zero allows from the factory. I think the stock tune should be fine for now.

BTW my zero srs has had some odd behavior in terms of charging and range readouts. After some diagnostics, they’ve agreed to swap out the battery. Should be here in a month. But last night as I grabbed my bike after a full charge, it wouldn’t turn on for more that a split second - when I turn the ignition on, the headlight quickly flashes on then back off, I hear a click, then nothing. Hoping it behaves today, or at least when I need to take it back to the dealership. Ever heard of this condition?
@NewZeroland2 жыл бұрын
Oh wow 😳 Headlight flashing usually points to the DC/DC converter, but if Zero says it needs a new battery I wouldn't ride it at all. I hope they sort you out! Good luck man.
@BrianTRice772 жыл бұрын
The SRS uses a totally different system for 12V power that could either be the DC converter or could be the MBB. It also has a separate 12V battery for better and for worse (backup 12V supply but also separate failure mode). This should have been explained to you better and should have been something you could diagnose and fix yourself, but Zero jealously locked down the new platform so much that you are at their mercy. Consider that if Zero diagnoses your bike incorrectly, you have no way to check their reasoning or dispute their conclusions.

Well, that's what their troubleshooting charts and flows tell them, and then what they told you. Mine has been out for the last couple of months too, not that riding the RSV4 is that terrible...After taking apart the throttle controller getting it to work, then it not working, then it working sporadically until I backed down the hill a little ways...Yeah I ordered another $200USD controller from AF1 which should hopefully get here next week some time and hopefully that will be the end of this. Also found out that the headlight is not at all water tight so while I was working on the throttle control the low beam popped when cold water hit it. I get that they're based out of California but almost everything wrong with these bikes is related to water ingress not mixing well with electricity and doesn't work well in the rest of the world.
@NewZeroland2 жыл бұрын
Oh man, sorry to hear that. I agree that barely anything on these bikes is waterproof. It rains in New Zealand more than half the year so I feel your pain haha. Water gets into the kickstand sensor and shuts the throttle off sometimes. That's another thing on my list to replace soon. I've never been so happy and sad about selling a bike.

I am resuscitating a 2016 SR that I had to leave behind in Rosarito, B.C. For the past 4 months. Seeing error codes 0044/45. After cleaning the kill switch with alcohol and teflon spray, the bike runs again. However, in the process of removing the throttle, we dislodged the throttle spring. Huge pain in the ass. We are not sure how to put the throttle spring back in place. Is it worth the effort, or perhaps I should simply replace the entire throttle and kill switch mechanism with new parts?
@NewZeroland Жыл бұрын
Aw man! Yeah that's a huge pain. You only need to loosen the throttle a bit and slide it off. If you can find a whole replacement for cheap enough, that'd be easier haha. Aren't 44/45 error codes for the kickstand? I can't remember. I associate all error codes to "water got in something".

Perhaps you can't even blame Zero for this one. The controller is made by Savcon and in order to phase in the motor you need their software (relatively cheap) and an adapter cable (super expensive) to start with. The whole thing is about getting the timing right....kind of setting the camshaft angle vs the crank. As mentioned the cheap controller in my e-bike had an automatic calibration feature which did this adjustment in a few seconds. Zero / Savcon could have done the same. It is NUTS to have to buy a new motor / controller and ship it 1/2 way around the world. Tesla is actually the same: The combination of motor, reduction gear box/diff and controller (some say inverter) is called the drive unit (DU). If a wire falls off from a pin iniside the controller you need a new DU. All this could be resolved easily if the manufacturers would support 3rd party repairs. There is no rocket science involved. Any car mechanic who can repair modern ice cars (using CAN scanner tools) would require a weekend course to get a high voltage certificate. In my opinium this is a big obstacle in the transition to electric. All EV out of warranty (like my Tesla 😥) become financial time bombs.
@NewZeroland2 жыл бұрын
I can definitely blame Zero for this. Everything Calfee Design did to help me was stuff Zero could have done, but didn't want to. They could have sold me an encoder or a new motor, and loaned me the CAN cable to remotely access my bike. This whole thing could have been over in 2 weeks if they actually wanted to support their riders.

As probably the leading brand ambassador, they could've certainly treated you better. Especially for a young company with a small team, one would expect a less bureaucratic and more nimble attitude. If I have issues with my bike, I'll be heavily weighing one of the alternatives. As the saying goes, "Ain't nobody got time for that..." I imagine there will be an SR for sale in New Zealand soon....
