Cracking stock there fair play! I think these suckler bread calves will become a premium product. 👍🏻

They are getting scarce on the ground but trouble is there are too many black and white to bring down the price

Great video again graham keep the weights coming on your videos ,I'd love to be able to do that with my own just can't get set up for it
@Kavanaghfarming5 ай бұрын
It is a good to do weights if you can it’ll show you how they are doing if you don’t know it’s hard to make improvements. A scale can pay for itself quickly

Fine cattle as usual ...it might be worth putting in a figure for bank interest as a variable cost in holding / selling decisions.

There are loads of extra costs esb diesel machine and upkeep etc just working off feed costs in that

Was the feeder an expensive purchase and would you recommend
@Kavanaghfarming5 ай бұрын
It was expensive enough but they are a good job compared to an ad lib feeder you can cut them back a bit

Hello Graham, is the water trough a bit high? Would you mind giving a bit of a break down to the cost of feed per day please? Is that just the cost of feed per day during a winter finishing period (say 100days) or average over 13-15mth life? I just found your channel, very honest, keep them up!
@Kavanaghfarming5 ай бұрын
That cost is just for finishing period so over lifetime would be a lot less but once they have a good cover there no point feeding more than gains €

Another great vlog thank you Graham. Are you a little conservative with the killing out %? Better that way than the other I guess. 👍

Would you make more if you put the heifers in calf and sell at a special sale
@Kavanaghfarming5 ай бұрын
Have thought about that a few times but it may be a lot more hassle and the stars wouldn’t be great on our fattening heifers. I don’t agree with these stars but that the system we have now

Growth is not even close to what it needs to be around here around here! We have put a bunch back in the house to let grass build for a while, it was either that or leave them out and carry feed to them so we decided that it made more sense to put 100 little lads back in the shed and reduce the pressure on the system a bit ( also we were having a lot of pneumonia issues with the smaller ones even though they were vaccinated due to the cold and changeable weather and sticking them back in solved that problem) again your stock look a picture, worth the price of admission just to see what a good farmer can do!
@Kavanaghfarming5 ай бұрын
What vaccine did you use we had issues last year with a lot of coughing on the early born calves none so far this year tg. It’s a hard place to be when you do everything right and still getting issues from this weather. We have a lot of things to improve on far from being perfect

@@Kavanaghfarming Bovalti Respi 3 was the vaccine and they got a shot up the nose at 6 days old as well, don’t think it was a vaccine issue as they were easy enough cured with a couple of shots and we didn’t lose any, I think myself it was just the weather and the fact that they were in a place that is high and exposed ( normally good for calves as little issues with flies and pinkeye) . Stuck them back in the shed last Tuesday week just in time for the few nice days but they were still as happy as Larry and I think they are doing better than they were outside, either way they can stay there until after the second cut and we have a bit of aftergrass , actually I am just back from having a look at where they were and there’s not much grass after growing back even though it got a good shake of fert 10 days ago. Weeds are doing well though!
