It gives you this false sense of security at some points and then you make a mistake and find that the map was designed in such a way that from just about every hard point in the game you have a straight route to fall straight back to the starting point and you have no idea it's there.

Hilarious how they thought they were finding checkpoints and such. This game was brutally unforgiving - you could easily fall all the way to the beginning from almost the end of the game. I can remember "getting good" at certain spots and then falling back to the beginning and getting stuck on those same spots for half an hour straight. It was just so soul crushing.
