Glad it was helpful! I suggest including experiences that will help the panel understand what makes you a suitable candidate for the program so if you include traumas explain how they affected you, how you worked through them and how these experiences would be beneficial for you as a psychologist.

Hey, thank you for your video, it was really informative. I've been invited to Rhodes and UFS and unfortunately both interviews are on the same week. I just wanted to find out from you, based on your experience where would you go? UFS or Rhodes?
@PsychIRL5 жыл бұрын
Hi Grace I'm glad you found this video useful and congrats on getting that interview invites that is and of itself a great accomplishment. It's quite hard for me to say because I didn't go for the UFS selection process and thus, I didn't do much research into their program. Try comparing the training program between the two and pick the one that aligns more with your career goals. You want to be in a well rounded program where you will learn with clinical and psychometric skills as well as be exposed to a lot of theoratical perspectives. For example Rhodes trains in both CBT and psychodynamic which means you'd get quite a well rounded training for both short term and long term therapy. Also look at the dymographics of the people they work with. At UCT we are the Child Guidance Clinic and we mostly work with children and families although we also have adult clients so I've learned more there than I would have at a program that focuses on just adults. So do your research first before making a decision and whatever decision you make base it on which program aligns with your career goals and where you would gain more well rounded competencies. Let me know if you need help with anything and best of luck for your interviews.

I have a question about the section about career related experience. How much of a deal breaker do you think this is?
@PsychIRL3 жыл бұрын
I feel people think of experience in the field as being limited to working in some sort of counselling setting but the reality is, psychology is about engaging with people and being able to relate with people from different backgrounds/ contexts. Any kind of experience you have working with people is worth including so for example if you were volunteering at a home or were part of a society that did volunteering work and leadership/ mentoring younger people all that is experience.

Hi Moalusi, yes, I do. The link is on the page banner for my insta account. But to answer to yourquestion, you'd have to check the entry requirements for whatever university and program you want to apply for, that should give you some idea of whether or not you're likely to be accepted.

Hey dear.😍😍💗I need your Help here :) I have a genuine interest in studying Psychology,aspiring to become an Educational Psychologist! However I'm very much anxious in terms of how competitive it is to get into the Honours & Masters Programme,especially since funding is concerned. My question is if I take Psychology this year how Will I get funding for my Postgrad studies since Nsfas doesn't cover Postgrad. That's a really big deciding factor for me since I don't come from a working background. I have till nextweek to decide & I've been accepted for Occupational Therapy but My heart lies in Psychology. I really don't know what to do. 😷😷😭 Is Psychology too risky for me? Considering my backround?😳 I'd appreciate you can give me a little bit of guidance :)
@PsychIRL3 жыл бұрын
Not sure how I missed this, so firstly, my apologies for the delayed response but I hope it helps nonetheless. Getting into honours is mostly about your academic performance and if you do well then that increases your chances of getting in. With masters it's more about experience (in the field and life experience and how that has moulded you) and character. Those are also things you can work on. I think all career paths are a risk because it can go either way so I think maybe base your decision on what you are passionate about. There are also more funding opportunities at postgrad than undergrad level. I'm not sure about OT and funding opportunities so you'd need to do more research on both, decide what you are passionate about and make an informed decision. I hope that helps.

Hi. You need an honours in psychology to apply for masters. You'd have to find out from the universities you are interested in applying for whether you'd need to do a relevant undergrad or your current modules can get you the credits you need to apply for honours (e.g. social work students who do psych modules can apply for honours if they have enough psych credits without having to redo undergrad)

Thank you so much for creating this KZbin channel. The information you've provided is extremely informative. I'm currently doing my final year in my undergrad studies (majoring with Psychology) at Unisa. Im planning to go full-time for my postgraduate studies. I'll be applying at Wits, UJ and UP. My question is, what is the selection process for honours? Especially coming from a different university. Am I required to write a motivational letter? And if so what can you advise that it entails?
@PsychIRL4 жыл бұрын
Hi Khanyisile, I did honour years ago so the application process might be a lot different than it was then. You'd have to check with each institution regarding the application and selection process. The last time I checked, there isn't really a selection process, you apply and they tell you whether or not you are in based on your application. I don't remember writing any motivation until masters so again you'd have to check with each institution.

I have been doing honours with unisa and we don't have any form on interaction with our lecturers.... How would you suggest I go about seeking for referees? Thank you, your video is informative and reduces the stigma of the difficulty of applying.... 🙃
@PsychIRL3 жыл бұрын
This is probably one of the greatest challenges on online learning. I'd suggest you pick a lecturer where there is a much more small number of people in the course, they might have a better sense of how you perform in that group. Also, if you have consulted with any of them then those people would be best to talk to because they have a sense of you beyond just marking your papers. If you guys have any kind of engagements that involve things like answering questions or supervised group interactions then the facilitators who have observed you would also be great as academic references. Also consider other forms of referees that aren't just academic so for example getting character referees from people you've worked with.
