I am not a big meal planner either. When I was a young homemaker I used to be big into meal planning. I even used to put out a low budget menu plan back in the old days of Yahoo Groups. These days I don't plan before I shop or plan too far ahead. I rely on my pantry and what I get the best deals on. Sometimes I will write up a list of what fresh items we have on hand and make meals based on what items I have and what needs to be used soonest. When I plan too far ahead I often end up not wanting what I planned so that's another reason I am not huge on it. I often will think up what I might make for 3 or 4 days at a time and that's about it.

I feel I would be the same way when it comes to my planning. With 2 younger kids, we find our plans change last minute often, so I am curious to see how we do. Always fun to try something new, even if it doesn't stick.

I like seeing empty jars too! It is so satisfying to go to the pantry or freezer and pull out your own meat and canned goods. I get a kick out of using leftovers for the same reason. It's just being a good steward of what you've been given.

Exactly... creative leftover meals are the best! I do love being able to pull a jar of this and a jar of that and such and make something delicious.

It is such a great opportunity to use up goodies before the next growing season. I am still working away on the freezers, but it is looking promising that we will be down to the 3 freezers by the time the challenge starts.

After having grown up on a farm and having looked after many homes ..PLEASE can or place all products that come in sacks,boxes,and paper packaging..iNTO tightly covered containers to avoid loss by BUGs or water damage...

We have definitely become better at selecting items when we are purchasing them that come in good packaging. We started buying only rice and oats that are in sealed packaging, so perhaps we should use the challenge to get through a few things that are still kicking around in the paper we even found d salt in vacuum sealed bags. We are so fortunate to have a very dry basement, not the best for veggie storage, but great for packaged goods.

With 7 cats (some inside and some barn), mice don't seem to be an issue.... we have been here 4 years and we have never seen a mouse around the house... in or out, lol.

Buying powder milk instant and not instant..just need to remember r to make with hot water and cool before refrigerated and no powder taste...

That is good to know. I have not ever used milk powder. Would you be able to use it for yogurts?
