I've been a minimalist for about 7 years now. When I decided to become one, I did it within 6 months. When you said, "I'm tired of seeing all this stuff," it took me back to the feeling I had. It's a relief to unburden yourself of things that you don't actually value. Congratulations to you!

Fantastic job decluttering the clothes. At one time I had every closet in my house filled with my clothes and there were also storage bags under the beds. I lost a lot of weight so some of the decluttering was easy. I donated all of the extra clothes one closet at a time. It felt so good that I was motivated to continue. Those full closets were nagging at me. A few years ago I started watching minimalist videos. I gradually started to feel the benefit of having less stuff. I was like a weight was lifted off of me. I was able to splurge and invest in a closet system so now I have two hanging bars in my closet. One bar has my long sleeve "winter" wardrobe and the other my "summer" wardrobe. I keep my bottoms to black or navy and all the tops go with those colors. All of the clothes that I love fit in one closet! I love opening the closet door and admiring how far I have come. I recently heard someone say that "we are not saving things from the landfill, we are just postponing their trip there". Why not donate them and let someone else use the items in the meantime!
@danabrown2391Күн бұрын
What a victory! Now when you go to switch out your seasonal clothes, go through them before putting them in the basement bin and make sure you wore and loved them all. Then as you put the spring/summer ones in the closet and drawers do the same. This way you only have to declutter a few things at a time to stay on top of it.

Interestingly, this kinda reminds me of how it is with food issues. If I put a positive focus on it and tell myself I can have a cookie, that goes a long way towards feeling like one is enough (maybe two 😉). But if I put a negative focus on it, telling myself I can’t have any cookies, I may end up wanting to eat the whole box.

Very encouraging!!! Denise Linn is a big believer in energy meaning you will fill void/need when you remove items mindfully. So the regret over removing the smaller clothing items because then you lost the weight -- you lost the weight because you were ready to let go of that stuff. Trust you did the right thing. Ditto the stuff that's larger that you're keeping now 'just in case.' Absolutely not helping your cause. Plants a negative seed that you'll fail to keep the weight off. If you love it keep it but 'just in case' isn't justification.

I've never been a clothes or shoes girl. And what you're describing as the clothes just making you TIRED... exactly. All of my clothing AND shoes (including my winter hats and scarves and handmade shawls) all fit in ONE 5-drawer dresser. I have my halloween cape, motorcycle jacket, and winter coat in our bedroom closet with my Docs boots, and that's it. More clothing than I can wear in about 8-10 days just stresses me out. Seeing you in that beginning pile made me honestly anxious. lol!! But you have done SO AMAZING! And seeing you go to drop it off at the end was SO satisfying! ^_^ Congrats! I wish for the clothes you chose to keep to bring you tons of joy!

There's a scene in the film The Labyrinth (with David Bowie) that this video reminds me of, when you say you're tired of all the stuff, that it drains you when it used to give you energy. The scene is about the emotional and physical weight of holding on to too many belongings.

I found it easier to pile the clothes into separate piles as I emptied my closets and drawers. I had piles for jeans, dress pants, dresses, skirts, dress shirts, t-shirts, sweaters, pj’s, underwear and workout clothes. It was a little shocking to find out I could wear a different t-shirt everyday for 4 1/2 months. And, because I own a washer and dryer, I dropped it down to my favorite 14 for yard work, gym and everyday wear. It also helped to take a break after each category. I had to keep telling myself to donate to help someone that could use them and not store them in tubs. I am retired with decades worth of clothes and sizes ranging from 5-1x. It took 3 days to get through my hoard. I also took a photo of my huge embarrassing stacks of clothes. Now I’m on to shoes and boots.

It was so great to see the donation follow through at the end! Woohoo!!! I donate to Goodwill as well, but if there's clothes I have a harder time letting go of, I take the extra time and steps to donate to my local women's shelter. Knowing that they won't have to buy them, and they'll get to have nice things, makes it easier for me to let go of clothes and household items that I no longer use, but still feel attached to. Maybe this idea could replace your yard sale idea? Then the things get removed from your space faster. And give you more free time to spend with your family during the nice weather~

Shout out to You, Mrs Heart! Seven bins! Btw, seven is a lucky number, so I am confident, it will bring you even more energy! Speaking of which, you looked extremely energetic in this video (ok, except of course after all the decluttering-I got tired even thinking how long it took you!). I am so hapoy to see you like this! May All the year be so! And it just crossed my mind, that in vase of future decluttering, maybe for Your old, cherished clothes and/or your boys ones, you could create, or made it tailored, a blanket, or stuffed animals/pendants, etc. I have a hoarder stash of clothes, but due to many moves, I got left only one small t-shirt from my childhood, which I adored and love still today. I use it now, as a small pillow cover, wash it gently, and by hand, but it is so nice and bring good memories and make me smile, each time I get to bed. It is a small, nice moment, when I see it and use it. I think it might be nice for You as well. And maybe for the boys. Cheers and go You! You just made me move and working around my stuff! Thank you tones!❤🦄😻🏠💪

Well done Melanie! SO proud of the amazing progress you have made!!! I recently did a no spend season, which made me realize that I also had more clothes than I can actually wear. In that abundance mindset, I began to enjoy wearing clothes I hadn't in a while and did an even deeper declutter than usual. Now I have room for most of the items left, and my closet is so much easier to maintain. You are correct though, it is a process that never ends, but can be fun. I am fortunate to have a wonderful consignment shop where I sell my clothes and a donation center that takes what doesn't sell. It is a lengthy process to get systems in place so that one is regularly decluttering and taking items out of the house, so those reading this don't be discouraged! Keep going! Once the systems are in place, it gets easier!

Congratulations on your weight loss, amazing progress! It's hard to believe you're about 5'3, I thought you were at least 5'6 after watching so many of your videos. I love videos when you talk about what each item meant to you and go over each one of them as well as talking about your methods and progress in general.

I’m wearing a skirt today that I never decluttered and hadn’t worn for at least 20 years. I am happy that I never got rid of it and amazed that I hadn’t grabbed it to wear before now. You did good girl. Shoes is something I don’t like to declutter.

A trick for hanging clothes: put the hangers on backwards. When you wear something put the hanger on the right way. At the end of the season you can see what you haven't worn and then assess why you haven't worn it and say bye to it. It's helped me a lot.

I’m doing this now. Also, when I declutter clothing I consider each type separately(warm weather tops, cold weather tops, jeans, etc.) so I don’t end up with too much of one category and not enough of another.

Way to go!!! I don't have anywhere near that many clothes but you've inspired me to go take a look at them anyway.
