Watching as you get MV Geordie ship shape is the better part of my week. I have been able to get on the water with my boat twice this year. I will be sitting with my own beer of the week, watching with more than a little excitement next week as you slip lines, shed the title of barge and take her to "sea" again as a real motor vessel. Cheers to you sir, I know that will give you great satisfaction. A real milestone.

I’ve been watching this channel for a couple of years now. It’s great to see all the progress and learn how properly make a vessel, shipshape. I can’t wait to see the boat run. I don’t know how far you plan on traveling, but I hope you make it to Lake Erie and possibly meet up and have a beer together. Good Luck - Chad Warren

the swageable cable ends are called nicopress sleeves or press sleeves depending on who made them. they were invented by the national telephone company and were originally designed for splicing telephone pole cables but eventually found their way into yacht rigging. i have 2 sets of crimping tools for them, they look like big orange bolt cutters.

1st you have to get this ship in shape, then get it shipshape - again, and again, and again … The good news: if done well and in the right mindset, it is all mostly fun!

MV Georgie is getting shipshape. Great to see all you're doing. I agree that it would be wonderful to take everything apart and then put it back together be it a boat, vehicle, or house, but few of us have the multitude of skills you do Peter. I've designed and built a couple canoes, canoe paddless, other woodworking projects plus am a lawyer, writer and artist--clearly with adhd, a skill and a curse--but must limit my skills and tools. My motto is "I don't need a welder!".

Thanks for sharing your work and teaching us so much about doing stuff on a old boat. We have a 1981 sailboat that we purchased a few years ago for the equivalent of a carton of cigarettes and a box of beer and it was in bad shape ... but we got it home and have been working at getting it shipshape for a future launch in the next few weeks.

Make sure your Shaft Log and Log plate if that is your setup is secured into the wood "Shipshape" , I remember going on maiden voyage as a kid after 1958 28' Chriscraft repower/ restoration, Dad said Gary look in bilge, i did and saw lots of ocean fluid and daylight at shaftlog plate where it lifted of hull , rotten bronze wood screws broke out of wood , the new motors shook them loose,i still remeber that scary day in1972 that my dads fast reaction saved the boat, Hey hope your back is feeling better, i am refitting a 42' Chris Craft as we speak as i have back issues, Boats are hard on the back, be careful

I see others have already suggested using suitable plastic pipe sliced to suit in the comments, that way the steering wires would be held laterally as well as up & down, just seems safer at sea and of course the inevitable junk in the bilge cannot then foul the cable if its rough, all the while allowing easy inspection/adjustment. Can't wait to see your solution, which will probably be much more elegant. Thank you!

Hi Peter, another great episode. I was thinking, instead of putting a piece of plastic between the two steering cables where the upper helm will be connected. Wouldn’t it be safer and easier to run each of the cables through a piece of PVC pipe? They would not be able to snag on the opposite cable, it provides a straight run for connecting the helm, would be easy to attach to the frame, and it keeps both cables away from the exhaust. I don’t know if that would be “ship shape”. But, I would be concerned with gravity and stretching of the cables over time they might begin to sag and increase chances of the connections catching on each other.

Where you installed the new shackles you can instead, install a new sheave at the end of the run about two inches or more above the sheave at the end of the run, which will help separate the two cable runs. So there not running so close together that way you don't have to install the molecular plastic so things won't catch. What do you think there Peter? would it work for you?

I've been watching your channel for a while and think I have a good idea for a video I haven't seen. I'm getting ready to retire and part of that is going to be downsizing. Living aboard is the ultimate downsize. I'd love to see a review of what tools you use, especially power tools. I'm thinking of tossing all my big bulky tools like table saw, miter saw and exchanging all my 110V tools for much more compact and battery powered options. I'd love to see your choices and hear your thoughts on compact tool selections.
