Peter, I've never tried to do any wiring on my 50 year old trawler because it's so hard to get it to look like the factories get it today. I just don't have the ability. You have done a great job and by you pointing out how you accomplished it, I might just give it a try in the future. It makes a lot more sense now. Also, have to tell you how much I love love love the new opening for your channel, every time I see it I miss Geordie. I can't imagine what it's like for you! God Bless!

Enjoyed the interim electrical panel work. I was getting worried about what looked like land in the background (through the windows), then you were out in the dinghy showing the low tide. Glad you’ll be able to do your sea trial (later today). I guess I won’t have to wait too long to see that. Cheers!

Great music to wire by! Low tide is only an interim condition!Cheers The winch along with the macerater pump gave me the most grief on my boat. The previous owner failed to seal the bolt holes correctly when he installed the new winch and rail system. Leaks ,led to deck de -lamination , and new fore decks were the end result.From tiny things comes Great disaster!

Heat the shrink tube portion of the connector first, then 'captive' crimp the conductor barrel. Also, use 'spray insulation' or Di-electric grease on all terminals. Salt air will corrode any exposed connections. A sheet of lexan over the buss bars and terminal block will prevent errant tools from shorting your system, without blocking the view. I hope you labeled all those Romex sheaths with a sharpie, gonna be tough to trace a bad circuit later without it... An old retired Sailor/Electrician... 8P

It's only a temporary fix, but an interim solution! Thanks for being one of the forces to actually do something about my getting out on the water, I ran across an Ericson 25 (1973) and laid out $500.00 to buy it. So far in slip fees for less than 30 days, I've laid out $1500.00+. Oh well, I didn't want that money! Congrats on this weeks work, it looks really good. Like your electrical wiring "style" EXCEPT: You should strip enough wire to have a loop within the box so that if a receptacle requires replacement, you can easily pull out the old and have enough room to install the new without problem - They DO go bad - Think ahead!!

today I am watching your latest episode from Water Rail, a 1930 Norfolk Broads Cruiser on my first cruise of the year, it impresses me that nowadays we can be still connected to the internet, despite being in the middle of nowhere. looking at the frost on the deck of this unheated boat, we have 2 shore power sockets aboard, one fore and one aft, and a single inverter socket (300W) which I use to recharge my laptop whilst under way. there is also a single 5A 12V outlet in the rear cabin. I love your channel and watch every episode as soon as it comes out, but battery management on my laptop meant I didnt catch this episode untilk this morning, if I can stay awake long enough tonight I will watch the live stream (it comes out at 9pm here.)

Here in Australia, you are not allowed to do any electrical work unless you are a qualified electrician (due to many people doing sub-standard work and causing fires etc). Wow so many AC circuits on a wooden boat.. damn... I always wondered about the clearance under the keel when i've seen low tide over your shoulder. 3ft is heaps of clearance. You do a lot of things halfway/temporarily in the interim to do yet again... If it was me I would do it properly the first time then no need to do it again.

In the interim, I will have to wait until you are ready to do the next box connections. Did you choose a household style for the boxes, or is that all that is available. I've always hated that the plates are larger than the boxes and it you are not building an interior that would look like the inside of your house, I would prefer something that has a flush level plate, or perhaps I should look into something waterproof if it exists. Caps that lock over the sockets would be nice.

Peter just a couple of questions, firstly, don't you need some sort of Certificate of Compliance to plug in shore power and secondly, I understand a galvanic isolated should also be installed.
@willywonka87303 жыл бұрын
I use GFCI receptacles throughout my boats for obvious reasons. I also tin the end of every wire or use tinned wire from a marine store (yes, it's expensive but you will have far fewer electrical problems as your wiring ages in the salt water environment. To share or not to share a grounding plane between your AC and DC systems? There is no easy answer but you should be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of each. Keep a sharp eye on your shore power cable ends (both). I Check mine every time I go aboard since I received an electrical shock from my bow rail while boarding. If it corrodes thru (like mine did) you may be the one completing the circuit.

Anchor winch drive chain may need lubing. Or replacing so you dont break the chain and have a freewheeling gypsy. There are also epoxy coated relays available for the winch . If you pull the winch motor down for service. May I suggest. VHT brand satin Brake Caliper paint spray cans as a coating. Or the glossy version. Looks like its powder coated when done and it dries in minutes. Rustoleum has a galvanizing spray also. If you cut open a length of tubing to lay the anchor chain in to keep the overspray contained . I dont expect there would be a galvanizing company in Victoria. Probably in Vancouver. I agree running aground 5 feet from your dock on a sea trial is not a good thing. Are you going to set the camera on your mast to time lapse forward viewing. So we get a tour with a view. Create a new bow roller frame prototype out of door skin to the larger size you need and hand it to a steel fab shop to cut and make two bends . There is also a water jet cutting shop on vancouver island with you as they have a youtube channel to cut the bow roller frame shape. Just ideas to ponder from a guy who enjoyed working on a friends 104' wooden hulled power boat for 22 years. Keel to mast head light, bow to transom. Inside and out. Only place I never went was inside the fuel tanks. I did feel them thru a hole in the hull one day. Had my arm in the hole shoulder deep blocking it. Thank goodness for water tight bulkheads. A plywood patch with canvas and dolphinite with ring shank nails solved that minor leak. Ever try to drive a nail under water.

I don't think you would be allowed to have a wooden housing for AC electrics on busbars with floating breakers here in the UK ! That would be viewed as a liability and condemned very quickly ! You'd need a marine grade consumer unit made from steel with sealed cable glands and waterproof cover and it would need to be out of reach, not at head height and wide open !
