Attaching the axel to the big Wheel will help reduce the friction as well, because the coefficient of friction of metal is much much less than of wood, especially when you can make a bearing for the axel to sit in. You can do this by drilling a hole through the axel and sticking a dowel rod that you can then attach to wheel for a solid mechanical connection. The friction in the bear is the most important thing stopping a fly wheel from spinning, so getting that right will provide a huge boost to your overall output.

Is this concentration at all corrosive to your skin? (Not the best lube for leather washers/bellows/etc.) Also, make damn sure to keep it away from your eyes.
@samuelmellars7855 Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, but it shouldn't be too different from soap (sodium oleate) because it just replaces the sodium hydroxide (lye) with calcium hydroxide (lime/quicklime) so you'd get calcium oleate, I think? But then an excess of oil as well, so it should be very bonded with oils and not act to strip oils out of skin or leather. Even so, I don't think it's the best stuff to apply to leather, because it's meant for high-pressure type of lubrication, where leather is not going to last.

I feel that most of his project are rushed. A lot of the wood ones seem to be low grade construction. Even with primiteve tools you should be able to drill a hole straight. Its very likely that bit is dull. Also wood workers back then took time to hone their craft and in the case of your wheel they would have shaved and balanced it.

So hang on why not just use olive oil as a lubricant? Wouldn't that work just fine?
@Peaserist Жыл бұрын
a few reasons, regular olive oil alone will go rancid over time. That is, one or more of the carbons will lose a hydrogen, becoming mono or poly unsaturated, this will also end up with the oil polymerizing, forming a plastic-like substance at worst, being sticky and tacky at best. The calcium hydroxide reacts with the oil to form calcium fatty acid salts, which are basically water-insoluble soaps. This can not go rancid per se, but I suspect it *can* still oxidize or otherwise go "bad" in some way. Hand-made bar soap (made with lye) can get these spots on them if you don't add a chelating agent, for example.
