That doesn't sound very artistic to be honest. Real art is shit so fucking painful to go through, that it ruins your life. Unfortunately millionaires assign a multimillion dollar value to the ruin of the somebody's inner soul. They have literally monetized people's insanity. It's a personal thing. There are watercolor artists who work like it's oil. But that's skill.
@jamiececilielange52497 жыл бұрын
I have tried all 3 mediums and it's not really that personal. If you google acrylic portaits and oil portraits, you'll notice that there are plenty of good oil's and not many acrylic's. Acrylic demands different techniques like scumbling or layered brushstrokes, and you might still not get as good a result. Maybe with an expensive medium. Also watercolor is different from oil, it dries quickly, but there is the advantage that you can fade a color out with water, so it doesn't matter. You can blend it even after it's dry. You can't really do this with acrylic. Oil colours can just be blended into each other. Acrylic isn't impossible and I think it's great for landscapes and bad for portraits.
@infernoskyful7 жыл бұрын
Darn it, I'm really new to these 3 different paint types and I've been really getting into painting landscapes. Now I've noticed i might have a harder time now because i went and bought Acrylic paints thinking these would do fine while painting on a canvas. I now know they will dry faster. Looks like now I'll have to wait a little while longer to purchase some oil based paints.

Got so bored with the TV programs I remembered I had some paints in a drawer from many years before. My first attempts were a bit laughable but with time and effort I have kept at it. Play around with it, and you will learn. :)

I great tip for new oil painters is to constantly move around the canvas. Don’t stay too long on one spot, because it’s incredibly ways to over-blend with oil. Oil is unique because it leaves a beautiful texture when done correctly, so moving around the canvas helps to be quicker and to not hyper focus too much. Always add smaller details towards the end.

Have recently converted to oils from acrylic... I find that by using alkyds I can do my dry work the very next morning. Also, with these (alkyd) products, I’m painting in a similar way to acrylic and rarely worry about “fat over thin”. But, most importantly, I don’t have the frustration of seeing a much darker painting in the morning than the one I was looking at the night before, which was my frustration with acrylics! Another important advantage is being able to take my time when working wet-on-wet, the slower drying time makes blending so much easier and my paintings are much better (to my eye at least) for that. Have just subscribed to your channel, you have a very clear and concise way of teaching...much appreciated.

I've been painting with oils, acrylics & watercolors for years - - I love them all but like advantage of oils staying wet - I often paint first with acrylics because it drys quickly and allows me to lay in a quicker background before painting the main subject in oils (like birds for example).

One day I'll come back to thank You when I'll be able to paint with oil colors without being stressed about the solvent mediums. Started from water color's and now moving towards oil colors.

The BEST video I’ve seen on the subject! I’ve seen many. You explain WELL, direct and clear. And this demo was amazinnng. I don’t have enough words. I’ll just buy new brushes and try oil. I love portraits and I think it might just be the best medium for it. Thank you! CONGRATS on your talent.

hey buddy.bro ive been watching you almost since you began. i love everything thing you do.. i have learned SO MUCH FROM YOU. Thanks so much for you help and putting all you info on there.............. ive been on a dry spell.. i haven't painted or drawn in a while. about 7 month.. but my new years rez is to pick it back up. and i have but it being that long it like learning all over again. i got a lot of work to do im into portraits. and the other day i couldn't even get my proportions downright and it made me just stop.. because it blow me away how much i lost in that time.. i use to lay down a portrait in no time. at least proportions and blocked in... i guess i just need to stick to it hard and push threw an not give up... { like they say it"s easier to give up, than to push threw and keep going and not give up... But thanks so much for everything you do .....Thanks so much Brian B

Wacky2baccyGrower hey I’ve been there. The thing that helps me is to step back from what I’m trying to do, and go for something simpler, like sketching or maybe landscapes are easy for you. Then of course when you’ve built up your confidence again and you’re on a roll, go for the portrait. Im also a portrait painter. Try it!

I started painting a little a couple of years ago (I am now 64). Then some water colors. I am far from an artist! But I play guitar and I ordered an inexpensive guitar to modify and paint. I would like to use oil of course. I would like to paint a tree with green leaves. Can you recommend a video, link or anything to help me with my project? Thank you very much!
@inpropriapaislee5 жыл бұрын
Juan Carlos Lopez not even sure if oil is applicable in this situation, it takes 6-9 months for it to dry completely on canvas so I can’t imagine a surface like a guitar, especially since you’d need to prime it very heavily. Acrylic paint would be the best option, it’s made to be used on most any surface and you can use soap and water to clean it off at any time before you varnish or finish it with a spray/medium.

I agree with Paislee’s comment. Stay clear of oil for your project! The oil paint will not stick to a treated, pressed & lacquered wood, even if sanded I would be concerned the oil would peel right off. It is not the type of paint for your project. Acrylic paint though, sticks to everything, look in the craft section of your local art store, MICHAELS for instance, small 2oz containers, is what you’re looking for. Brands such as Americana and their off-brand, DecoArt, are the best a well as Folkart. The variety in colors is exceptional, with good pricing, you’ll be able to paint your tree as a non-artist using colors directly out of the tubes without fussing to create your own colors which is a process. Adding dimension and shading to the trunk and leaves using already made colors will be task enough but a fun project non the less. Keep in mind that acrylic paint dries quickly which may work in your favor but should you want to work wet on wet brands such as Golden and Liquitex make a medium that you add to the paints that will increase the “open” time of the paints = the time the paint stays wet. I suggest you purchase a small canvas, do a test run on it first before committing to working wet on wet or wet over dry and get a feel for both. There is an artist by the name of The Art Sherpa on you tube I recommend checking out. She works with acrylics, does fun projects, she has several hundred, if not a thousand, videos. Scrolling through you may find a few that give you pointers. She has created a few tutorials on painting trees. Best of luck!

The way you explain and demonstrate is on point. Moving around the canvas makes it easier to be quicker and to avoid becoming overly hyper-focused. Oil is special because, when applied properly, it leaves a beautiful texture.

Thank you sooo much, Your video taught me more than any other videos I've seen. You my friend are my new Mentor in the world of oil panting. I have searched hard for someone to help me become familiar with the techniques of the grand masters and here you are doing this and I'm very great full to you for that. I admire the works of John William Waterhouse, John Singer Seargent and a few others who remain nameless ones that are great artists. You are now my new mentor and I thank you for your artistic direction and for sharing your knowledge with us all. Thank you so much my newfound video mentor.
