Indeed yes you can choose any accommodation, be it having a hotel room to staying at local! The whole island will be reserved for people like you! It will be very exciting and you’ll have fantastic experience! I travel from Munich! because you’ll be applying the visa to germany, and the first entry should be in germany, Munich will be better option, to avoid and unwanted stress! I’ll suggest go for Munich, then you can easily take train to Lindau, from the airport itself!
