Very helpful video! I love your big gorgeous planters filled with plants . It’s nice to see them right after planting to see what they look like at the beginning .

Thank you! Once they fill out it's hard to see how many pots there are and how they are organized. 😊

I love pot gardening. I stick to one plant or one plant type per pot.

Love that! I save space for smaller monoculture pots as well. There are just so many fun things to grow!

So the perennials end up in the ground? When do you do that?

Ideally I would have planted them in the ground already but the rainy and humid weather has set me back. I just hold them over on the patio until I'm ready to plant. I've planted perennials all the way into mid-November, depending on the weather, and they do just fine over winter. Many of the ones I have to plant now I purchased late in fall and overwintered them in the garage.

Do you buy perennials for your pots that you put in the ground at the end of the season? I see this on some of the channels with huge viewership. I can’t get myself to buy such expensive plants for a planter, even though I buy them for my gardens… Also, I loved watching Rebecca Kohls back in the day on WCCO. One thing that rings in my ears is that she always over plants her containers. She said to do this because the season is so short here that we might as well get some big color as soon as possible. So sometimes I take her advice when I feel impatient. Thanks for showing us your beautiful planter situation!

I have used perennials in my containers before but rarely do it anymore. Their growth habit is so different from annuals and don't fill out very fast so they tend to get engulfed. And yes, they can be so expensive early in the season. I guess I'd rather wait until fall and buy them on clearance! I do like having full containers from the start but I plant so many containers it would blow my budget to overstuff them. And I just hate seeing something wither and die off if it gets over crowded!

How do you keep the plants protected over the winter?

Plants that are hardy in my zone I overwinter in the shed, giving them a trickle of water once a month. Some plants I treat as houseplants with varying success. Geraniums, begonias and plectranthus have survived indoors. The canna rhizomes, elephant ear corms and dahlias I dig up in the fall and clean off the soil. I store those in cardboard boxes in my basement. When it warms up in spring I pot those up and plant them after they start sprouting. The majority of the other annuals die when frost comes in the fall and I buy new ones every year. I also start lots of seeds every year.
