Taping paper down with painter's tape will help keep any paper from curling. It works really well with the Canyon XL as well as any loose sheets. If using large sheets, it is usually best to stretch paper.

I like to use the Artista II water colors from Crayola when I want really bright colors and just want to play around. The paint brush that comes with the Koi set has a stopper included so it can hold water while you travel. The Windsor & Newton set has been on my wish list for awhile.

I've been watercoloring for a while, but I think that you can always learn more. It's great that you included the Crayola paints. They looked pretty good. I had bought some for my grandkids (ages 4 and 6) but didn't think of them as paints I would use. I'm babysitting tomorrow so we'll have to play with them. You pointed out the advantage of buying good paper. Comparing the paper to stamp sets and number of uses is a really good way to think of your purchase. I've also heard that starting out with good product gives you more chance of having good results, which will increase the chance of continuing with that medium. Thank you for taking the time to test paint and paper, it is very helpful!

Great informative video Sandy! I loved watching the Holbein paints bloom.....like magic eh! I'm sure this was a very expensive undertaking for you and I want to thank you from the bottom on my heart. Sometimes I think us "watchers" don't realize the time it takes to do these tutorials as well as the expense. However, this one does! TFS

I just got them, and they are wonderful. They are not what we think of as traditional watercolors - they're a different kind of paint completely, by strict definition, since they use different binders on top of standard watercolor binder, and behave a bit differently (specifically, they are more - but certainly not completely - opaque, they lift super well/don't stain, etc.). Many people say they are between watercolors & gouache, and that is true is terms of opacity; however, again it's important to keep in mind that they are, in fact, in a category of paints on their own that is popular in Japan (particularly with calligraphy & the line, iirc). To learn more, check this out: www.sadiesavestheday.com/blog/2016/10/3/what-is-gansai-watercolor-101 For the record, I just got them myself. I also wanted them for a good while. I strongly recommend getting them. For the price, they are phenomenal. Hell, they're amazing regardless. Definitely worth investing in.

Thanks so much, Sandy, for having done the hard work putting together this and the other beginner videos on watercoloring. Watercoloring is such a complex field of art that I really think you've done an awesome job on these concise videos. Just a little tip as to the W&N field box: I've seen another video here on KZbin showing it where you can see that you can take out the middle "bar" that holds the pans by pressing against the plastic locking mechanism at the top. That way its easier to take individual pans out. Not sure I've you know that because you said that it was a little difficult to take the pans out.

Thank you for this video as finding out that many of these “cheaper” paint sets just don’t perform well (chalky & not much pigment)! So on a budget & getting by with the Windsor & Newton “Coteman” student grade & the pans just pop out so one day getting better ones & try different paper than just Canson XL.

Montval by Canson is absolutely wonderful. I don't get why it's consistently overlooked by most people (& on that point, I'm so glad that you gave it some of your time!). It has this great quality where it somehow works as great watercolor paper, as well as working great as a mixed media paper. I use watercolor, water-based markers (Tombow), and even alcohol-based markers (Copic) on it a good amount. I'm an illustrator, not a stamper, but I could see it also working wonderfully for crafters and the like, for sure!

Sandy; Bravo! This being somewhat of a new "On Trend" movement in the crafting community I think your info was spot on. You gave them info to make informed decisions about products they see. Like you Art is my first love so while I love the Holbien paints I use my Inktense and ALBRECHT Durer pencils to as watercolors via glass trials. Because I stamp I find Hot Press my only go to but a very good quality weight that is made for all the water. We know it's there. What was the first form of Art on paper? Not oils. Bahaha. Lastly just a little secret one of my teachers showed us in the late 60's in oil painting class. Clean your brushes well and before you store them to prevent them splaying? Yep. Right in our mouth with a bit of spittle and the tip dries perfect. To this day I never use oils, I spittle my brushes, never use those ungodly long handled brushes. But I don't paint huge masterpieces either. You were fabulous. Thank You for your tutorials. We're never too old or too advanced to learn or to be inspired and so far KZbin is free. For now. 🙄🤗❤

You can also take your inexpensive watercolor papers and stretch them. This way they won't curl when you watercolor on them. Do a search on KZbin for watercolor paper stretching and check out the videos. (I watched the frugal crafters video. Very easy to do.)

Great video - i was surprised at how weak the wn paints seemed! .........Just wanted to add that I don't think Tammy's comments were intended as criticism - it was just enthusiastic info sharing. I appreciated her additional information, and learning we aren't buying the same product in North America kas sold in Europe. Thanks muchly for the reviews :)
@SandyAllnock1
@SandyAllnock1 9 жыл бұрын
***** I was surprised at the WN too - but they do work fine in context - just not in that comparison. Everything I used here was tested past its usual limits - "Here, little paints, I'm going to swoosh you really fast, and give you a grade based on that ONE opportunity to swoosh!" I think I'd freak out if I was tested like that! The WN will also work better for more "calm" watercoloring that isnt all swooshy. So I'll be giving them lots of love too. The XL is ok for most crafters starting out - if they get the pricier stuff, I find that they freeze. Even in my classes. They're "freer" if they think it's inexpensive paper and be willing to toss it if it's a wreck. It's easier for newbies to paint on than the Ranger stuff, too - and less expensive. So hopefully that encouragement will get more people to try out watercoloring, where they might have thought they'd never even attempt it. And though it may not seem like criticism to some, it's hard when I put this much effort in a video meant for one audience, and people end up telling me they know more and expected me to share at a bigger level that would only confuse the audience I created this for. :( Makes my heart sad. This happens a lot in comments, and I know I need to develop a thicker skin - but I was heartbroken that even though I said the salt thing the other day was NOT new, I got chided by every Tom Dick and Mary about how old it was. *sigh* And thus why I used to not read comments, LOL. Ignorance was bliss :)

Keep in mind the W&n has student quality and artists quality. The cotman line that's in the set shown is their student quality. Their artists quality is way more expensive but I heard it is way better quality.

+Sandy Allnock. Got a Tip for you.... Stop reading the comments if you are very sensitive! I know it sucks.. but the minute you make a video .. your putting yourself out there... It Comes with the territory. PEOPLE ALWAYS have a opinion. You have to respect that as well ! Bonne Journee
@bugeyedmonster2

I think that depends on how you use the Canson. If you use it for just one layer of color, it's okay. But if you're trying to paint with it, or put multiple layers of color, it really doesn't take the color very well. It seems like the paint sits on the surface of the paper, rather than soaking in. When you try to put more color on top, the first layer comes up.
@bugeyedmonster2
@bugeyedmonster2 6 жыл бұрын
@Kat, yeah one needs a thick skin on the internet, but it seems that some folks go out of their way to 'flame' others and leave nasty comments. (Like Straddler and Waldorf of the Muppets.) If you don't like something, why bother commenting? Life is too short, just move on and find a video you do like. (Or at least that's my opinion.)

Sandy Allnock I still use my cheaper paints too, because they have qualities that my schmincke paints don't have. For example, they don't lift at all, so I like to use them for layers that I don't want to lift when I paint over them. It's all about knowing which product to use for which purpose, really.

I was looking to buy Winsor&Newton watercolors, I see so many, many people using the travel set, I guess is the cotman line too, but recently when I asked for a great watercolor artist (that I admire, her instagram name is sophialiuuuuu)she told me that. between; Winsor&Newton, van gogh, koi and schiminke the better is the van gogh line, but I dont know if she mentioned the student or professional, now I dont know who should I choose, and in your video at the end you didnt sayed much about the Winsor&Newton, this worries me, since I'm learning cheap watercolors could be nice to test it, but where I live they are kinda, not so great (the cheapest ones) I'm recently trying the Pentel watercolors, so far I liked, but I want to choose next a great line too, but for professional. Since you know alot more than me, could you help me? I'm really green in this watercolor paradise, if you could help me understand I would be gratefull! Thank you really much for your time, and I'm terrible sorry if I sounded goofy or my grammar dons't look good, I just used Google transleitor haha!

Just a question Sandy. Maybe I am acting like a snob. But I got the schmincke horodam dotcard to review. Other than the fact that they are indeed luminus I fail to see the hype. I know other brands of watercolor who are as luminus yet pricewise a lot cheaper. Is it just me that I can't feel it?? I mean Yes if you can work with schmincke as fluid paints that would be a HUGE Plus. They are as luminus as my Inktense pencils, wich,I think for nature colors, is a bit to much,but when you like bright is totally awesome. But is that just me ? I feel like such a snob when I go Mêh on their brand while all others go woohoo :) Can any of your viewers or you help me out here, I feel like I am missing out Schmincke wise, caus' I don't feel it,lol.

+A .Vultink I haven't gotten into the schminke line---lots of reasons I won't go into. But if it makes you go meh, just go with what you DO like. I'm not one for jumping on bandwagons anymore...been burned by buying the hype way too many times! :)

Haha I don't intend to buy them. It just makes me wonder why I react so different on hypes then usual reactions. Maybe it's just a way of how I was raised: never cared much for brand names: if I didn't like the quality it could be sent down from Heaven and I wouldn't try,grin/stubborn as my mum would call it :D (Don't apologise on my behalf, I am a big ( well,on age at least) girl. It's ok if you don't care to comment, your channel :)

I'm a beginner artist and i want to get into water colour, I'm also doing art in my leaving and want to learn new techniques, is the winner and Newton worth buying for a beginner artist?
@SandyAllnock1

I actually recommend, if you're going for tubes, the Daniel Smith essentials set of 6. They're high quality paints; what I have found is that practicing with cheap paints is okay, but you have to reinvent your techniques when you get good paints, so I wasted a lot of time trying to use cheaper stuff. And the DS set is inexpensive, given what watercolors cost - salln.net/1PVXkA6 And - Be careful if you get the W&N that you don't end up with the student grade, too.

I had been used canson watercolor paper sheet 330 gsm and when i used wet on wet it wrinkle like crazy even though i have been tape it :"( Do you have recomendation for paper which is not to expensive but decent enough? there is not many choice of brands in my country. Is the Cotman watercolor paper good?
@SandyAllnock1

+Aksanu Nadiya I haven't used that one---its student grade, but their paints are fair so paper could be alright. I've heard Canson outside the us isn't the same as here, sorry. How about Fluid brand? Or Fabriano?
