I want to bring up on topic of movement and UI -- this game is playable on controller! And more playable than you'd think, even though a lot of the nuanced controls involving holding one or more triggers plus a face button. But this makes Caves of Qud uniquely one of the best hardcore traditional roguelikes easily played on the Steam Deck, without use of a virtual keyboard or smudging your screen.
@BranpanmanАй бұрын
I want to echo this sentiment 💯 I have dozens of hours in Qud on my Steam Deck and once you get the nuances figured out it’s such a cozy experience

@KitfoxGamesАй бұрын
@@FBracht Streets of Fortuna is a game currently being developed by Kitfox! It's a free-roaming sandbox RPG where you play as a citizen living out your life in the fictional city of Fortuna, which is a procedurally generated world inspired by the real life city of Constantinople circa 500 AD.

As someone so new I looked this video up, there's one piece of wisdom I'd like to share: make friends with the left alt key. When held, it blanks out the map and color-codes all visible creatures according to hostility. Particularly while you're still learning to "read" the game's visual style this is an extremely useful way to actually notice the weird creatures barrelling toward you.

I cannot overstate how important having an escape plan or three is. The first time I had a character survive past Red Rock was a gunslinger with both a force field AND teleportation. When something can kill you in Qud, it's almost certainly got a very good chance of doing it. Respect everything.

Before I forget, here’s some stuff the games official wiki recommends you do as well: • go to the northwest to get a Issachar rifle, this is identical to the musket statwise but it has a capacity of 6 • kill snap jaws in red rock and in the hills surrounding the northeast of Red Rock to get studded leather armor, leather boots, a leather cap, and boarskin/leather gloves gloves to get 6 Defense value (DV) this is the bare-minimum if you want to survive the early game. • invest in cooking skills ASAP, you can get buffs like thirsting at half the normal rate and extra HP, among others like beneficial mutations. • there is a pair of mechanical wings in the swamps surrounding Joppa, although the location of these is completely random and not set. • if you complete all the quests available in Joppa, you get a Recoiler (AKA a device that lets you teleport to a location) that goes to Joppa Live and drink, friends.

@smackheadАй бұрын
You should be glad you weren't born 20 years earlier than you were then heh - Nethack, Angband and hell even Rogue were much *much* harder. In modern time even ADOM is a lot harder. This game is easy - but it's great - which is why I'm here as it was linked in the release notes and wanted to see how they showcased it to newcomers.
@EHAmosАй бұрын
@smackhead different times, different mindset. I have tried Nethack and Dwarf Fortress, I just don't have the will to keep playing those lol. But if those games were the Pinnacle of RPGs and there were not many other options I would be more than thrilled to play them! You're right, I am lucky to be alive in an era where we have so many great RPGs to choose from!
@smackheadАй бұрын
@@EHAmos Oh if you want RPGs there were heaps back then as well - from the Wizardries to Eye of the Beholder to a Bards Tale. Wizardries were the toughest - which is why I chuckle when kids (and believe me I don't use that term in a derogatory manner.. I'm old so anyone under 30 is a kid heh) say 'souls like'. Dark Souls was easy in that it was like a dance; an initial difficulty until you learn the moves then it's second nature. Wizardry would make most gamers today top themselves :) Though as you say - different times, different mindset. You get achievements for a loading a game these days which is right up there with participation trophies for simply showing up lol

I'm not understanding why a screen can have so much unused real estate, yet they choose to use a small font that makes more difficult for a visually impaired user. I'm please that allow for user to be able to adjust this. I currently find it hard to invest so much time with so many details of game play when there's a high probability of dying, thought the environment of the game sounds interesting... I''d probably have to play in a mode that's more about discovery and less about battle.
