This seems like a solid, up-to-date beginner's guide. I'm surprised you don't have more views, just trying to engage a bit so you get a little more traction. Would love to see some more focused guides on specific topics. Thanks

Amazing video.If possible please consider adding chapters as it would help a ton with navigating a tutorial like this.

3:00 - I wonder how many people will get to this point in the video and exclaim "numpad?! I don't even have one of those!". Even for desktop gaming, more and more the compact keyboard layouts have been emphasized. In my opinion, either mouse movement or gamepad controls (which are surprisingly great for this game) would have been a better way to teach this game to a beginner.

Well I've never played a roguelike with anything else than the numpad so I'm honestly not even capable of explaining it differently. It is very cool though that this one even supports controllers, I didn't even know ^^

@@Ic0nGaming Probably a clash of cultures thing, then, because this is my first "proper" roguelike. If your audience is entirely rogue-heads, then it's fine - but I think I'm at least anecdotal evidence that Qud is reaching beyond this bubble and into a slightly more mainstream indie audience. And I think these are the people who would likely be put off by the idea of a game you can only control with a numpad. (Of course, you CAN control Caves of Qud without a numpad, but it would be reasonable to assume otherwise if your video is the first video someone is watching after getting curious about the game.)

@@FBracht Oh, I am very happy that you told me cause I would've never found out on my own. I might even give it a spin to try it out. Always nice to see from outside what's new =)

I've got my 75% layout keyboard set up with a "numpad layer" so I can hold capslock and shift the "QWEASDZXC" keys into number keys, works great for this and CDDA

Same here, I have a 75% compact keyboard and it doesn't have a numpad. This is more and more a problem with newer gaming / mechanical keyboards. I'm glad arrow keys and mouse control works fine in this game

great intro to the game. i got it on sale a while back, died while getting lost. moved on to something else. this got me feeling like i should keep going at it. really impressive how much discovery there is in this game

eh, i could be missing something, but most of this game sounds like glorification of ignoring QoL
@Jayy9979 күн бұрын
@@gsofficial Far from it, the UI is actually very intuitive and friendly and there are many QoL features built into the game. It looks retro and ASCII in style only. The guts are very modern and solid.

I just bought Caves of Qud when 1.0 released and since I have one of those pesky 65% size keyboards, none of the mappings are correct! Very grateful for the tutorial, though! Keep it up.

I’m so close to buying this game but I can’t decide if I’ll like it. I got my moneys worth with dwarf fortress but it’s probably not fair to compare the two!
@vincemincevince12 күн бұрын
yeah it’s not the same at all if you like traditional riguelikes i would recommend it i’ve played allot of hours with it it kicked my back side massively from the start but i always go back to it and the replay-ability is incredible
@Ic0nGaming12 күн бұрын
Actually the comparison isn't bad at all! Caves Of Qud compares very well to Dwarf Fortress' Adventure Mode. Only that CoQ is a postapocalyptic wonderland with modern technology and massive options in the mutation tree (basically you can design your own X-Men ^^). I'd say Qud is a lot like a mixture of a classic roguelike (Think NetHack, Rogue, Moria etc.) and the DF adventure Mode.

If you are interested in the deep simulation that Dwarf fortress offers, this has a similar appeal imo. The world building is especially deep and creative. The developers are also good friends with the dwarf fortress developers. I've absolutely had my moneys worth. You could play this game for hundreds of hours and still only scratch the surface. I've played this game for over 500 hours and I still haven't made it halfway through the main quest line. I think they worked on it for 15 years or something. It does require some patience at the start but progressing a character deep through this game on permadeath is very engaging.

Hmmmm . . . so "Qud" is pronounced similar to "cooed" as in "a pigeon cooed"?

If I only knew, I'm just winging it :D

Ideally that is how it should be, kinda like made up Arabic - It is based in an oasis with lack of water ( similar to middle east ) and the first quest giver's name is Mehmet ( arabic name ). If it was to be pronounced 'cud' it would just be named ' Caves of Cud ' ( sounds lame ) but it's Qud which starts with 'Q' - so the 'Q' is spelled like the 'Q' in 'Quran'. So its something like ' Caves of Kuud '
