In this video, you'll learn about Ciscos Cloud Service Router, the CSR 1000v. It's a virtual router, which could run in the cloud (e.g. using Amazon Web Services) or on one of your local servers (e.g. running VMware ESXi). Specifically, you'll see how to download an evaluation version of Cisco's CSR 1000v, install it on an ESXi server, and construct a lab topology with three routers. You could use such a lab for your CCNA R/S (200-125), ROUTE (300-101), or TSHOOT (300-135) practice.

Great video Kevin. When you're creating the virtual switches, you don't need to assign a physical adapter to them. Where you were selecting the interfaces if you look slightly to the right you'll see a grayed out X, this will allow you to remove that requirement.

Still having some teething issues with VShpere 6.7 which could be down to hardware issues, but I have three CSR100v routers all talking to each other and talking to a small physical network connected to the PC! Great!

Thank you for this great training video. I am running the 6.5 version of the ESXi and it was just the opposite for me. I couldn't get the ISO to work so I used the OVA and it worked just fine.

Hey Kevin! Great video! Inspired by you I found out that the latest available version without service contract is 3.15.0. Also, you can install it in VirtualBox (as long as you have enough RAM :-) ). Time to hone my routing skills I guess!

had the same issue with installing on ESXI 6.5 had to extract the OVA and boot from ISO.

I just loaded my server with ESXi, and installed the Cisco CSR 1000v virtual router. When I start the router it seems to keep running in an endless loop. It doesn't stop at the standard router bootup message about running the configuration wizard. I've let it run like that for 20, maybe 30 minutes. What's happening here?

Hey Kevin, I had the same issue with deploying an .ova with the web client. The workaround is to use ovftool to deploy the .ova. Spent many hours trying to figure out how to work. I believe using the .iso was the better workaround though. Another workaround may be to use vcenter, but I never got to that point, nor do I have reason to use vcenter. I only have a single esxi server. Linux: ovftool --acceptAllEulas -ds=datastore -n="R1" --net:"GigabitEthernet1=VM Network" --net:"GigabitEthernet2=VM Network" --net:"GigabitEthernet3=VM Network" /home/username/Downloads/csr1000v-universalk9.16.08.01a.ova vi://IPADDRESSOFESXI/ For anyone that is wondering what error I was receiving: "required disk missing" I've also noticed that sometimes this is a false positive error and hitting continue and powering on the VM will allow it to work... sigh, I miss the vsphere client.

I just deployed csr1000v as cube in my home lab ... I have a concern .. is it safe to use this router for home lab. Also i have to configure it as NTP server so need to connect it to internet. Will that be safe too ?

What do you mean by "safe"? I use a few of these in production networks including some facing the public internet for site to site tunnels... Not a single security incident for years.

Hey Kevin, Amazing Video. Just checked that out... Would be interesting to learn Collab Lab v2 using this.. Do you know if there are any cheap options for partners for VIRL. I need to start building my lab with virtual switches and routers. Would using gns3vm for csr 1000V would be ok? I would be more than happy to hear from you.. I am still confused about the new Blue Print. I am not sure shall I even use GNS3 for routers or switches or not..Happy Weekend!!

Kevin Wallace I see that the ios S-Train series 16.3 (that is needed in the Collab v2 lab) is compatible with CSR1000V. Would be good to see how can we install CME V12 on this router.

Yes you can do it with 16gb barely but it will work.

To simulate default gateway on the router so you can distribute this default route in your entire routing domain using redistribution or default-network {classful network} command in the global configuration mode combined with network command in routing configuration mode on your router.

Problem is CCNP old syllabus is outdated, learning R&S only 10% will be useful in 2023 - 2040. New CCNP Encor syllabus is what you want to do... VM, automation, SDWAN ... guys L3 routing and MPLS is obsolete...dont waste time learning this
