Your my teacher. I recieved my eggs (18) from a local breeder. Put them in the incubator and on the 13th day they started pipping, so I stopped the turning and raised the humidity. 13 eggs hatched and only two chicks didn't survive. Pretty good numbers! You have been so informative and I owe you a debt of gratitude❤

How come? They started pipping before hatching?

Thet's pretty much the case while hatching poultry, they pipp before they'll crack the shell.

@@marielasessa2921That's how that works. They don't do it after they hatch.

Just a tip... if you will put pea gravel in the the water tray. They will get plenty of water between the gravel rocks. No drowning or getting wet! God bless you all.

I built my quail condo 2ftx8ft stacked three layers. Each layer is divided into two 2ftx4ft pens. The top two pens are my breeder/layers and the bottom two layers - two pens each are growout pens. I produce mainly for meat. My set up is a little beefier because it's out in a covered run that is very secure but I do protect against snake and rats/mice. I fashioned a hinged lid over the protruding 5inch portion of the rollout egg trays for the top two breeder/layer pens that I can secure with a latch. Nothing can penetrate my quail condos. I cover the back with plywood like you do but also have temporary plywood covers I put on the sides when temps fall below freezing so that only the front of the cage is exposed. I also have built 1ftWx2ftD shelter in the breeder/layer pens running front to back with a plywood door on the front. The quail have a side arch door from the pen. The floor is solid plywood and in the winter I lay in pine flake bedding. In spring/summer/fall I place a sand bath container in there. The birds like the privacy - they even lay their eggs in the sand. This serves as an additional shelter for the quail to snuggle/warm from the winter temps. Similar to you I breed/raise Jumbo Pharaoh and Jumbo White Recessive quail.

Thanks

Just make sure your temperature and humidity is constant throughout the incubator, and your male to female ratio is good so you have a good fertility rate.

For cage birds I recommend rabbit water bottles. They cant knock it over, contaminate it, babies cant kick shavings in it or jump in it. They gravitate so easy to water bottles. I prefer homemade with rabbit water nipples like a 5 gallon bucket and tubing but seriously rabbit bottles are cheap and they are 1 million times better than poultry waterers. I never once thought myself to purchase rabbit bottles for my birds back when I had them (health reasons I needed to take a step back and my rabbits were just easier and lower maintenance) but a friend showed me hers drinking from them when I was complaining that my quail never get all this water the poultry waterer is supposedly retaining to release slowly. They kick shavings in causing a wicking effect which ruins the shavings, or they poop in it etc. So when she showed me the bottle thing instead it was a game changer it made them easier than they were to have peace of mind they had a consistent clean water source. I do plan on getting quail and ducks etc again at the new place and when I do Im setting up the rabbit water nipples. Ducks need head dipping nose clensing water for sure too but they mucky up their water so much I like knowing for drinking water they have that source too so in between their water cleanings they have clean water they know they can drink. The rabbit nipples are easy enough birds of different beak shapes can use too. Also I use to cohab my quail and rabbits so it was good they had something they both could use. I love your new aviary. I didnt top mine so when the fox came and sat next to the pen the poor little boogers thought the fox was inside with them and they super jumped/semi flew over the fence and the fox got them. I now know I can use deer netting to top my pens and its helped a lot with my rabbits from aerial predators so I think I will be trying to make an aviary for next year. Your video was very inspirational with your aviary. It solves all the predator issues Inwas having. It keeps the quail in and keeps predators out.

I live in an rv, I’m considering getting a metal shelving unit, and enclosing it with clear hard plastic panels with one vent for air to enter and a vent leading out the window with a small fan so that indoor air is getting into the cage then flowing outside hopefully without getting too many allergens in the rv since I’m pretty allergic to many animals. I’m thinking of using weather stripping around the plastic panels that will be the door and clear silicone caulking around the edges for all other edges so that no bird allergens get into the rv. The cages would hang from the top shelf and use the shelf beneath as a tray to line with newspaper for droppings with another cage directly below that. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Yeah, that is why I switched to coated wire. They do make a pvc rubberized spray that you can coat the wire with but it takes so many coats it wouldn't be cost effective. Easiest is to try and find coated wire somewhere.

Good point, I use Durvet vitamin / electrolyte additive for the first week and then once a week after that until they get transferred to the growout cages.

Question: how long is an unincubated fertile egg still viable? Talking stored at room temp. My chicken friend says a hen egg will keep three weeks if you keep it below 70. What are the rules on storing quail hatching eggs? Suppose it takes 4 days to collect enough eggs for a run? How does that work?
