I recently got really into email aliasing. Proton’s password manager integrates simple login, so it’s really easy to generate new aliases for every website.

Me too, but also have the duckduckgo service for email lists where Proton aliases get rejected. The ability to strip trackers is useful on email subscriptions.

You can take your domain name to another registrar, so if yours is either increasing prices, implementing terrible policies, or going under, you can take your domain to another registrar. So that step is pretty safe too. With masks pointed at a custom domain, and a custom domain pointed at an e-mail provider... and an e-mail provider pointed at your email software of choice, every step can be replaceable.

Great video! Subscribed! I'm torn between using AnonAddy and SimpleLogin, I think after watching this video I may try both and see which works best for me, but ultimately I will likely just stick with the free tier with one of those two.. Given your experience in testing and trying both, which would you say offers more with their free tiers today between SimpleLogin and AnonAddy? From their pricing pages, it looks like AnonAddy offers unlimited standard aliases, whereas SimpleLogin's free is just 10 aliases but allows unlimited reply/sends from the aliases. Do you happen to know if you can Reply/Send using the AnonAddy's free option? Curious about your thoughts and recommendation. Thanks!

You can reply/send with AnonAddy's free tier, yes. If bandwidth is not a concern then AnonAddy probably has the better free tier.

@@TheNewOil thank you for the reply! ah, the 10MB/Month limit for free tier? Gotcha. I’m also considering just purchasing a $12/year domain to use for email alias forwarding. I realize this is more manual upkeep, but as a tradeoff I suppose it’s always something I can control.

If your domain registrar goes out of business you're still safe. there are mechanisms in place that kick in if that should happen.

@@TheNewOilicann, the govern body for the root zone will have a copy or registrant details in an escrow somewhere. The respective registry for the tld would also have a copy of that. In case a registrar goes under, they both will contact the registrant via the registered email on file to facilitate and to notify about auto transferring the domain to another appointed registrar. It won't be lost. Happens a few times already ie with net4india. So the chance of losing a domain in the case of registrar goes bankrupt or whatever is close to zero.

Is there any advantage to replacing my e-mail on Facebook, Twitter, KZbin etc. with an alias e-mail?....I would assume that my accounts are already liked and that those companies won't fully delete any connection to my old/true e-mail address.
@TheNewOil
@TheNewOil Жыл бұрын
It's worth a shot. If you don't change it, they definitely won't delete the old stuff, and if you do there's a chance they will and it may also protect you against data breaches and such.

If you've already signed up to a bunch of services using an email, would you then have to delete those accounts and make new ones using a new "master email" with aliases for every service? Or how should I go about it?
@TheNewOil
@TheNewOil Жыл бұрын
Depends on your threat model. In a perfect world, it's the only safe guarantee. We've seen data breaches before where it turned out the company has kept the original email you signed up with. In practice, I'm not sure how common this is. What is very common is your current email address being swiped, so unless you have an extreme threat model, I would say that simply changing your email address in your current account is plenty. Again though, it's up to you and your risks.

This is the only good video I've watched tonight. Thank you. Sadly I would have liked you show how complicated it is to send an email from an aliases. Fastmail seems like the easiest one so far and it works in 1password which I have. Might not be the best for privacy at first but apparently you can setup PGP.

Following your way of organizing aliases, you would need two domains. I guess if using proton mail that means I would need the unlimited subscription? And are both of your custom domains tied to your email or is one to the email and the other to the alias service?
@TheNewOil

I do use two aliases, but you could probably easily get away with one. There's really lots of ways to do this, that's just one way I do it.

Hey there. I want to switch from gmail to a secure email with custom domains and email aliases. Should I go with protonmail $10 business plan or anonaddy? Or would you recommend a mix? Im okay with spending around $10-$15 a month on a secure email provider.

There's more to this question, like if anyone you know will be using Proton as well, but broadly speaking I'd say the AnonAddy plan is probably more bang for your buck.

How do you manage multiple emails from different providers (not burner emails)? Like if I have some gmails, a protonmail, and a tutanota email, is there any service that let me look at inboxes of all these different emails at once?
@TheNewOil
@TheNewOil Жыл бұрын
Not to my knowledge, though Thunderbird will get most of the ones you listed. I prefer to simply have one account and funnel everything into that via alias providers like the video discusses. I do have some other accounts that I check periodically just to make sure I'm not missing anything.

On iPhone you can login to multiple accounts from different hosts. I currently am logged into 8 accounts, a mix of gmail, outlook, and custom domain. I can view all my inboxes at once a single inbox. I don’t know about viewing the aliases though as I haven’t used them yet

is ok to use icloud+? im new in the privacy world. currently im moving out from google. i already have a proton adress witch i use for my bitwarden, dashlane and crypto things. a tutanota account that i use mostly for general stuffs. . I have a duck adress . a anonaddy account . a simplelogin free but with a random xyz domain and catch all . icloud+ all this services forwards to my duck adress witch forward to my tutanota. However, the icloud hide my mail sometimes seems to be the easiest to use and manage and i can create infinitely without paying more. is ok to use icloud hide my mail? i already create a ton of adress and saved in a note on my bitwarden and standard notes (also to anonaddy and duck). or should i use anonaddy/simplelogin instead? I still don't change all my logins yet.

It's a question of trust. You're trusting Apple with the content of your email. Personally, I don't trust Apple, but if you do then use it. I will say, forwarding everything to a DDG address is probably overkill and it's probably involving more people in the mix than necessary. If you can't trust them to forward straight to your inbox, then you probably shouldn't be using them in the first place. Personally I think you're overcomplicating it by having so many forwarding services that forward to other services, but I guess one could also make the argument for having redundancies in place.

If I simply own a domain name, which I do, is that enough to use the domain name in an email? Or do I have to have the name activated & the email set up etc? So I have a domain parked with GoDaddy but that's it. Is that enough? Or do I have to have a further development of my domain which would seem to mean that there's html going on & CRAZY advanced set up etc? You DIDN'T go into this at all in this video.
@TheNewOil
@TheNewOil Жыл бұрын
When you purchase a domain name, most registrars (such as GoDaddy) include email though them at no additional cost. How this works exactly varies from registrar to registrar, sometimes it's enabled by default and includes an inbox, sometimes it's not or forwards to another provider. If you wish to use your domain name with an aliasing provider, check their documentation, it will walk you through how to set it up.

Half of the login argument is stretched here. Even with aliasing, knowing the aliased email is half of the login - so it doesn't matter if you use an aliased email or not
@TheNewOil

Fair, but my point was that it prevents credential stuffing because you're not reusing the same email address on every site. It won't protect a compromised credential, but it can limit and contain the damage.

@@TheNewOil thank you for responding. what if my nameserver is Cloudflare? Is cloudflare able to see the content of the email? I just own a domain without email and webhosting. I just registered a domain, changed nameserver to cloudflare and added mx entries to cloudflare as well. Can I use SimpleLogin with my settings?

You cannot use the same domain across multiple services, so you can either use it Cloudlfare or SimpleLogin. As for if Cloudflare can see the content, I don't believe so but that would depend on how it's set up. I don't use Cloudflare for email and never have, so I'm not certain what the setup entails.

I don't respect unsubscribes, I work in a regulated industry with heavy legal requirements for advertising for consumer protection, very annoying. So I hired a super sketchy advertising company from Indonesia which does lead generation & they legit ignore every law on the book for me. Then I pay on a per lead basis. So I'm not instructing them to do any marketing or how to generate leads (aside from our first few calls with no text records). Its so much more effective than following the laws. Their stupid laws anyways, it's in finance so there is a lot of compliance stuff which really reduces the effectiveness of advertising. So now I do very little advertising myself, they do text & email marketing, I believe they also do war marketing by just mass texting numbers. I have a very good business, client doccuments are very well protected & I dont use any big-tech services for my employees. But laws are dumb & business is competitive, you gotta take any advantage you can get.
