Of the dozens of FreeBSD setup videos I have watched, this video is far and away the most comprehensive. I absolutely love how much additional exposition you offer about every nook and cranny of the setup process. You take the time to fully explain all your choices and why or why not to choose various options. Most setup videos seem to be created by people who think the viewer desires to see a setup happen extremely quickly...perhaps there is an audience that just wants the commands; however, I want to settle down with a legal pad and a cup of coffee, sharpen up a Ticonderoga pencil, and immerse myself in the installation process. I want to learn WHY we are doing the steps we are doing and this video FULLY satisfies these requirements. Thank you so much.

Thank you for the your kind comment Athenian it means so much to me. I'm very happy to hear that my video has helped you really gain a deeper understanding of FreeBSD! Thank you for watching my videos.

You know I don't use Linux. I learned a few commands here and there. I don't used BSD of any kind because I don't have a job related to programming or informatics. YET I thoroughly enjoyed this video because I feel that FreeBSD and other Unix flavors actually teach us a lot. Thank you for the upload, hope you are doing great!

So what do you know? Small foot print in FreeBSD too?? That df -h command you showed us in your OpenBSD video, has been a godsend! I will reinstall FreeBSD in a VB machine and see what comes up. I do have more apps and options in FreeBSD, and CDE DESKTOP IS available in the 32bit version only. SO, I am all in there. Lately. I just got word, that Ebay and other websites are now scanning ports when visiting those sites. I do online banking in Linux and all my serious work.. So I am thinking I need to try FreeBSD instead. Not just a cursory play around. I am going to have to find a updated paper manual for this if I do go FreeBSD for my main desktop, cause I will need it! I find myself trying some FreeBSD tricks and setups on MX LINUX and while SOME do work, many like rc.conf and sysctl and rc.local do not as MX LINUX is not setup to use rc system. My only real issue with FreeBSD was I had trouble setting up audio to work on my web browser and use Audacity to record the browser output(youtube music). I did get help from Robbonuggie though. So again, I may consider this option. I need better security. I am finding Ebay is acting funky lately and I am getting Chinese website pop up or weird site errors in broken English under ebay.com! Maybe time for FreeBSD?

I hope it works out for you. I've had good luck when using FreeBSD for web browsing, audio recording etc. In regards to audio problems, It's sometimes easier and less error prone to install a full desktop environment like xfce/mate/gnome. Since they contain tools to help you configure the audio system. If you prefer to use the command line: www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/sound-setup.html

@@teetechtm Thankyou! Yeah FreeBSD is more of a full distro of the BSDs out there indeed. Pretty much ALL the software I want for it including my precious CDE-DESKTOP is available albeit for 32bit only, but I am not complaining as I would use FreeBSD on my P4 machines anyway. I just wanted to try other lesser known less popular BSD offerings.. OpenBSD and NetBSD. They are lesser known but yet industry standard if you understand what I mean? GhostBSD,Trident,TrueOS,NomadBSD,etc, are more FORKS of FreeBSD, while Net and Open BSD are their own BSD OS. I like that BOTH OpenBSD and NetBSD offer a working graphical setup right from the CD installer without the need for an internet connection.. kinda like the older versions of FreeBSD used to do. Now FreeBSD requires you to manually install X from the DVD or the net. It does not install it from the installer directly and by default. So that is my reasoning behind fighting with NetBSD and OpenBSD quirks, in order to use them as I require. Sadly though, in the end, FreeBSD even with the need to install X manually(no installer option out of the box), just has the better software offerings. configuration seems the same for all BSDs across the board.

Could I run steam proton on FreeBSD with modern hardware to play AAA games?
@teetechtm4 жыл бұрын
I believe you can do that although it isn't as full featured as on other OS's. You may want to checkout wine on FreeBSD. But I know that only older AAA titles play well under wine. As in no destiny, battlefield 1, starwars battlefront remakes etc. Check on FreeBSD's forums they have an entire section around multimedia/gaming. Here's a post I found about steam. forums.freebsd.org/threads/what-are-my-options-for-steam-on-freebsd.68703/ This video could be helpful to see steam in action on FreeBSD. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5nGpKKIr9p8fLs Hope this helps you. Also please stay safe amid the COVID-19 problems were living in. This whole week I couldn't reply to your comment it just loaded a blank page. So that's what took so long but I'm still around. I don't know about you but the social distancing is getting to me never realized how many times I leave the house lol.
