Getting started with model railways is it expensive? Are there bargains around? Liberty Junction 33

Aup folks I pre recorded this before I went away to Devon, I’m back now but I’ve got gardening nonsense to do so here’s a cheeky one that I had on the bag!
As I always say thanks a million to all my subscribers, and thanks to everyone that watches my videos, if you haven’t subscribed please consider doing so, I like my subscribers quite a bit more than my none subscribers I almost love them, not quite love but better than friends😆
Thanks to the commenters and folk that share these on, they’re intended as light hearted entertainment, some are absolute crackers some a bit more serious. I love the model railways, I love filming them going about their business and I love chatting about them. No one in my house is interested in listening to me chat about them, hence I chat to you guys. Feel free to ask any questions.
The intention of this channel is to come at a different angle from the usual and do my own thing which may or may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
It gets me some peace up here in the loft though so I’ll keep it going. I only have a small fleet as they’re all the new sound fitted models and it’s a new hobby so don’t expect a different loco in each video. Hope you like this one, cheers! Dave

My missus spends an absolute fortune on art. She wouldn't care if I did the same on "childrens toy trains", but I'm too tight. Built up a decent small collection of rolling stock via Ebay, charity shops and the odd local model show, mostly secondhand.

To be fair mate mine doesn’t give a monkeys and she does know how much it costs I just say it for comedy purposes 😆 I’m actually quite tight with stuff myself and like to get a bargain! my last 3 locos were birthday presents. And the Accurascale PGA’s have all been reduced 👍 6 of those tip on wagons were a rake off eBay and they were a bargain price wish I could find more like them I’m sure they were around £135 which is only £22.50 each and separately they’re almost double that! I generally shop the Kernow bargain aisle buying stuff that’s half price but I don’t need at all but get it anyway thinking I’m being shrewd 🤣🤣🤣👍

old lima trains can be had for the bucket loads cheap.Over there in the UK those British Ho MDT's and Hymeks show up all the time I bet. Aloing with those little starter sets with the 2 wagons, loco and circle of track.

WPG brilliant wish I had thought of that and if your giving shout out I'll have one me ole mucker, ta descent. Seriously, your are spot on it can be done on the cheap but in the end no matter how you approach the hobby at some point it will cost more than you ever planned to spend. Decent video as allways pal. I’m lucky as the wife doesn’t give a crap what I spend on models 😂 lucky really as she saw the invoice when my 4 Cavalex 56s turned up 😳😳 It is an expensive hobby no denying it but like I say to my misses a loco will last a lifetime so is it really that expensive 🤷‍♂️ And congratulations on over a 100,000 channel views that’s decent 👌👌👍👍👍

My Daddy was a Yorky, so Naturally I throw nowt out. you never know when it may be needed. especially for maybe a brace or side or anything really. You know that as a bean is a fart, the moment you throw it away you will need it. great video again dave.. Love those running shots. Had a short myself this weekend, took 2 days to figure it was a swapped electrofrog from an iso frog backed with a three way point. shorting across the middle line. I really have to do some form of block detection...

Mmmm, I’ll tell yer a good way to keep costs down. Find a shady bloke who can visit other peoples layouts & lift stuff away on the sly…. I’ve spoken to Ken Bachmann before nice bloke and he isn’t even German! Top video mate - I think what proper hobby is cheap, Im moving from classic cars so its cheap as buggery compared to that. But everyone getting into it should use local model shops, and buy good used. Cheers Shaun

The biggest problem is a mix bag. We know new tooling are ££££, then retail catches us all. 2nd hand models are good if people know what they buying as there are many sharks are about. Model clubs do have reasonable stock sales and are good prices but have people who can people in the hobby. I always look for reasonable bargains.

For me used Bachmann 37s are still doing strong money when they’re 10 or so years old - how long do they last? I don’t have a clue - I’ve heard a few horror stories from eBay, I bought my 37 red stripe from eBay paid top money really £200 for a 2019 model used. I love it but it’s inferior to the newer ones in some ways. I generally only buy used wagons as you can’t really get done over with them 👍

I was able to buy mist of mine from expenses which I received when travelling for work, mostly from Ebay. I think I might only have one or two new models, everything is used and all are DC

Double slip, I bet you could make one in 40 minutes, just use plaster card shaped like an X and start cutting,glueing, and disc cutting. It would make a good video name, Double O Dave makes a Double O Slip.

Great vid Dave. If you know your friendly retailer very well he will knock you up some price stickers to stick on your boxes . Then they can be left about the house for her indoors to see . Problem solved happy days

Great idea the WPG but personally i don't bother fibbing cos it doesn't work when she says "theres £7 get ya self a couple of them £3.50 wagons". Also fathers day is approaching fast so i've got my orders placed with the family and had to tell em the cost beforehand! Btw TT120 very expensive cos no cheap second hand bargains about at mo Dave, great vid as usual mate

10 Accurascale with sound for a cheap horse. But let's not forget The tack ( bridal, saddle,stirrups lead reigns rugs etc) The Horse trailer to take them about. The big 4x4 to tow the trailer ( and get up to the stables cos it's up a bloody mountain) The shelters, the storage container, The land...don't ask 😂 Farrier to trim the hooves every six weeks. Equine dentist to file the horses teeth down every 6 months. Worming every 3 months. Vets to treat laminitis be because the grass is too rich. Hay because the grass isn't growing. Conditioner feed because the grass is poor. Etc etc. I reckon I could buy the company with what's been spent on horses over the years lol

Loads of people moan the hobby is expensive, it has never been cheap, but when you make stuff rather than buy every mortal thing, it can make a huge difference. Rocks , tree bark, nowt, landscaping, Gyproc 30 £10 massive bag, papier-mâché, almost nowt, paper, card, air dry clay, pennies. Paint, shop around £1-2. In TT:120 there isn’t much used stuff about but I picked up an 08 shunter, as new, £55 although one sold other week for £175!!! Stone walls, cork off cuts … free!!! On another note, those yellow barrels with the white stripes…. There’s been a development, Thunberg PertoChemicals have been up to no good again. 👍

Well.. depends what you class as decent, that orange RMC hornby tanker on my layout I bought on eBay as a job lot with that small blue wagon and a couple of others (all hornby) for £9 The listing wasn’t the best pictures were appalling so it had no interest and I snatched a bargain. And they worked out at just over £2 each including delivery. Not common but out there.
