In this tutorial I'll show you how to create a tide finish on the back of your pieces. Whether you're making collars, bracelets, pendants or earrings you can use the techniques I show in this video. You can create smooth pendant backs, but often this is the hardest finish to get right as you can't have any finger prints or imperfections visible. In this video I'll show a bunch of other ways to finish the back with ease.

Great video Samantha. Been trying to figure out how to make the backside of earrings presentable. This is very helpful and gives me more ideas. Thank you for sharing your talents!

I know this question has been asked many times but my backs have glassy blotches. How can you avoid this?

Are you baking on a surface such as glass, ceramic or metal? To avoid shiny spots, try baking on printing paper.

Thank you for the clear and concise tutorial. A messy back on jewelry makes me think of a house only painted on the front - it seems incomplete. I have made earrings and pendants with a 'professional' looking back, sometimes adding metal findings or a few tiny jewels to the backs, and sold them as reversible. My clients appreciate the versatility and the fact they can purchase two items for a smaller investment.

Thanks for this... is there a brand of aquarium sponge you use? The one I used was similar, but left black stuff all over my clay :( Did you get it on Amazon?

I bought it from a polymer clay supplier a number of years back. They no longer sell it. I have use sponges from amazon too, but those require heavy washing before I can use them with polymer clay clay.

Hi! Thank you for this post. Can you do a tutorial on how to keep Clay clean for those working with light colors. No matter how much I scrub my floors, dust the house, wipe down every nook and cranny including my work space I still get fibers in my clay that shows up after baking. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Thanks.

Hi for your first tip, do I need to sand? I have been having discolouration/blotch when I sand the backs of the my earrings. It doesn't look clean. Can I just leave it without sanding the back?
@JessamaTutorials

If you texture the back, then sanding is not necessary.

But if I don't texture the back, I need to sand or I can just leave it alone?

Thanks so much for doing this video. My backs are never what I want them to be. My favorite one that you showed was with the sponge, but I don’t recognize the type sponge you used. Is there a particular type of sponge?
