A question was submitted to me recently about how I got started with ProPiks and I wanted to answer it on this channel. In this video I briefly share some exercises to help you get started.

Thanks, Dennis. Hope it helps some folks. I think there are people who excel at fingerstyle who will desire the edge of these picks, but who are accustomed to playing with their bare fingers.

What brand and model guitar is that it looks pretty large, and what brand of capo are you using?

I wonder how you can do downstrokes with those on.

Personally, I do downstrokes with my thumb pick and my more intricate and melodic playing with pointer and middle finger. So, thumb for rhythm and fingers for melody, unless it’s Carter Family style picking, then it’s flipped and the melody is played by the thumb and I strum backwards with my pointer finger for the rhythm.

I've watched two of your videos, and in both your guitar was out of tune. Have you tried using one of those clip-on-the-head tuning devices to help get the strings the right pitch?

I do own a clip-on tuner and can assure you my guitar’s intonation is just fine. Do you always write silly comments like this to musicians or just to Berklee College of Music graduates?

@@todddawson4489 Thank you, I appreciate your nice reply. I don’t always get legitimately helpful folks sharing advice. I apologize for my biting reply. 🦋

Noticed you only use two fingerpicks, one on your index, and another one on your middle. Don’t you use a finger pick on your ring finger, and maybe your pinky as well? it would have been nice to see a close-up on how you wear the finger pics so people do not wear them inverted. Did you not used to advertise the Alaskan pics at one time, and if so, why did you switch to these?

Yes, I had a teacher explain it to me that 2 fingers is all you need and he was right. The strength is in your pointer and middle fingers. You *can* play with your ring finger. I don’t know of anyone who plays with their pinky.

As for aLaska Pik. Yes, I’m sponsored by them. Comparing them with Pro Piks would be comparing apples with oranges. They are great for indoor stages and in the studio because their sound quality is more gentle and you don’t have a steely sound. But, I play outdoors A LOT and steel picks are necessary when it’s warmer weather (they don’t bend) and for their volume when you’re trying to get above the den of street noise. I started out with ProPik fingerpicks and wanted to try using aLaska Piks. I wore the aLaska Piks for a while, I’m fact, I recorded my Joan Baez tribute album with them (she uses them.) But, ProPiks don’t require any maintenance whereas aLaska Piks do. and since I’m on the road all the time and busking often, I use ProPiks. That should answer your question.
