Hello from Texas! I found your channel while sorting out how I was killing my plants 😅 I’m new to this hobby and needed help! My alocasias are in semi-hydro and thriving. I’ve bravely chopped and propped my monstera deliciosa. Brought my cacti back to life…. Successfully propagated my alocasia pink dragon from corms. Never heard of Hoya, I have 4 now growing beautifully in your recommended soil from a way back video. And the begonia obsession has begun. I’ve just purchased some begonia leaf cuttings! Oh, also, the acrylic paint and baking soda thing, yeah, it’s fantastic. I used the small bits that fall off the sphagnum rather than tree fern fiber. I am sure I’m missing other things that I’ve learned from your channel, too many to name. I live out in the wild country of east Texas with a fairly nonexistent planty community. You are delightful to listen to and learn from, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Hi! My monkey tail cactus has been outdoors ever since I bought it years ago. It’s on the outskirts of Madrid, Spain, where winter lows reach around -2°C. It gets some morning sun and is sheltered from the rain. It blooms a lot every year. Around here, everyone I know who has one keeps it outside.

The monkey tail cactus is my favourite the first time i saw it was on Wildfern channel hers looks amazing. I am still on the hunt for the rat’s tail cactus is more thinner and looks amazing trailing down. I have a friend who forgets watering her plants and dies. So cacti and succulents are more suitable for them. We have the awful Irish weather here with winter definitely a struggle for plant people.

All my alocasias are grown in semi hydro, except three but they always have a full water globe so they still have constant access to water and all of them are thriving. Before that I couldn’t get more than one leaf but now they are all full and constantly giving me new growth.

probably two unusual plants (to me) in my collection are Crasula Muscosa (rattail cactus) & Callisia Repens (turtle vine) i got the crasula from local nursery. it was in bad condition but i fell in love as soon as i saw it and its been a week since i got it and rescued it and it's starting to take over. It just flourishes in south facing window. The other one turtle vine is a cutting i got and it's very similar to tradescantia family, it doesn't lose leaves at the top.

I do the same. No drainage, semi hydro at the bottom and soil mix substrate to fill. It works. And i agree in regards with the nutrients.

💚That begonia Sinbad💚 is AMAZING! I will definitely look for one. I'm wondering if you've heard of the "perched water table" effect in pots? It's so opposite of how it seems it should work. 🪴 Thank you for always giving us such wonderful videos to enjoy💚. (🌧 I'm also sitting in dreary, dark & damp weather in Portland, Oregon, USA 🌲🐌.)
@TheJungleHavenАй бұрын
Oooh no I haven't... tell me more!
@kellycasperhanson4426Ай бұрын
@TheJungleHaven The "perched water table" (which is a BIZARRE title) explains why placing stones in the bottom of our pots DOES NOT improve drainage. Water does not "like" to go from one substrate to a different type, so it actually STAYS SUSPENDED longer in the upper layer of the pot rather than draining out of the bottom. There are videos that explain the science behind it far better than I can. The point is do not layer different substrates in pots because it hinders drainage and can cause root rot. 😑 I learned this the hard way. (🪦RIP poor plant babies🥀.)

I also have a caudata Sumatra. She is a beauty. I keep her under a grow light with a plastic bag to increase the humidity level after potting her in PON. S The leaves can get red with enough light. She has several peduncles and flowered multiple times too. Now I am anxious about removing the plastic bag because she is low key living her best life underneath it.

Hi Claire, I am so happy you have a cleistocactus C. and that you are knowledgeable about its care. It’s rare to find videos on KZbin about that plant. Mine seems doing well with 4 arms and pushing new ones in rather weird places🤔. The arms on mine are not as thick as yours. Do you know how to get the arms to be thicker? I keep it in a southwest facing window and since I leave in the North at this time of the year the sun can get so intense at 11 am that I have to put a sheer curtain to prevent burning. same goes for my boobie cactus where the new growth is slender then the bottom and I do keep it right under a grow light. How do I keep the new growth thick? Thank you and big hug to your faithful four-legged baby 😊

The only Begonia I have is a little volunteer growing in the pot of my Monstera obliqua. It's plain green ... but it's leaves are sparkly and almost irridescent. I like the look of a lot of Begonia, but I haven't felt the need for them, but to get one for free is pretty cool and I love that it's green and sparkly. I kind of agree with what you said about Alocasia micholitziana. The only other Alocasia I've had before was the standard A. x 'Amazonica' and I just couldn't keep them alive. I've had two die on me. The micholitziana maintained so many leaves and then, finally, when my care became a bit more irregular due to stress, an upcoming move etc., it dropped down to being a one-leaf wonder, but I've put it in semi-hydro now and it's pumping out leaves again, and one of the corms I found is also growing now too. My last 'Amazonica' just immediately dropped down to one leaf and maintained that for about six months and then just decided to rot even though I was very careful not to over or under water. I feel like the difficulty with Micholitziana is in giving it the care it needs to look good, not keeping it alive.

How much water do you leave in the ones that you're growing with no drainage and a layer of pon at the bottom?
@TheJungleHavenАй бұрын
It depends how much water they like. For drought tolerant plants such as succulents I let it all dry out between watering, whereas things like the begonias I try to keep a little reservoir most of the time. I often use a funnel to water the side and avoid soaking the soil each time
@nataliet9491Ай бұрын

And I live in an 8b region and for me she does not like direct light or her boobies will burn 😂 I hardly water but when I do I water very lightly or too much water will put her in shock and will turn an ugly dark green color! Not the trendiest however I cannot recommend the philodendron narrow enough as a ‘beginner’ unusual plant. Mine is in a chunky mix and is super hardy. It’s still pushing leaves out despite it being the winter and although it has (and appreciates) a moss pole I’ve found it to grow outwards and fill out so I’ve not had to extend the pole so far.
