Thanks or the channel... very helpful. How do I actually get students to create a page where they can write and edit... or how do I get them to create sections where they can write their own notes or assignments that I as teacher can view? Many thanks.
@MrTompkins
@MrTompkins 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael H - these sections are automatically created when the class notebook is made. Each student gets their own section that they can write to and you (the teacher) can see. I find it most useful to create a page for students in my own area (the content library) and use the "distribute page" function to copy this page into each of the students sections, even if that just happens to be a blank page! The reason for this is that I can then give that page a name, which will be the same for all the students, and thus making it easier for me to view using the "Review Students Work" tool.

@@MrTompkins Thanks Mr T. Just to clarify. If I create a section called Reflections ( and I copy one of my pages into that section.. .the students can edit / fill in the boxes there etc? I'm teaching in second level in Ireland am just getting used to One Note / Teams etc.
@MrTompkins
@MrTompkins 4 жыл бұрын
Advice is always freely given. But I do offer channel membership for those who would like to donate something - and I answer members questions first and fully. Just tap the "Join" button if you're interested in supporting the channel that way! If you create your Reflections section in the content library and then create a page within that section, then the students will be able to see it but not edit it. They could "copy" it and then "paste" it in their own folder and write on it there. Or you can "distribute page", which will make multiple copies of it and put one in each of the students folders.

Thank you very much for this and other videos you have done utilizing Teams. The OneNote Class Notebook is the way I am going. Your videos have been very helpful and informative since I am brand new to Teams this school year 2020-21. We are currently distance learning again, but not like we did this last spring. I am learning and teaching students at the same time on how to use Teams. I told them we are in this together with an end result that will surpass anything we have ever done. When students were in the classroom, we set up Interactive Notebooks. I am very excited to see how I can adapt OneNote Class Notebook as an interactive Notebook. I teach 8th grade math in Northern Minnesota, USA.

Hey Chris - I really love the positivity expressed in this comment! It's been one crazy year, but there are always silver linings, and I'm so glad you are still looking for them. I love OneNote and really glad I've trained up my students with it. We have mostly returned to face-to-face teaching, and similarly also catering for students who are self-isolating. My school has introduced new rules that staff should not routinely mark students work, and any assessment work they do hand in needs to be quarantined for 72 hours before I can look at it, and then 72 hours again before i can give it back. Our OneNote Class Notebook cuts right through that, and I can see the work of a child at the back of the class, or even from their own home, without leaving my little box at the front of the class!

If you are working as an individual tutor, then you can create a onenote notebook and share this with other individual students. However, class notebooks are a specific EDU customisation, and so you will struggle to emulate their features with a group of students drawn from different schools. I'm also interested how tutors might use this more effectively with their students, so if I find out anything useful, I'll be sure to make a video on it!

Thanks for all your helpful videos. I have made a page in student class notebook which has some gaps the students need to fill in. Can they insert text boxes and type onto the page or will they have to use the digital ink function? They dont have touch screen devices. Thanks for your help. Also - is it better to insert a pdf file word or powerpoint?
@MrTompkins
@MrTompkins 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Anne - if you insert a pdf or use the “print to OneNote” feature, it will actually insert an image into the page. If you do this and want to write on top of this with text, them before you distribute the page it’s better to right-click on the image and set it as background. This way it can’t be moved around the page accidentally and it’s much easier to create the text boxes on top of it for the students to type in their answers. If you are importing from word, you could do it the same way, or you could open the document, copy the text and paste the text directly into the page. Students could then add their answers in between, similar to editing a word page. I normally ask them to choose a different font colour if I’m doing it this way. Both strategies have their advantages and I do it both ways depending on the task!

Hey Brittany - I’m a maths teacher so a little bit outside my field of expertise! Immersive reader is built into both Teams and OneNote, which is very helpful. Depending on he devices you’re using, you can use a stylus to practice letter formation or writing words etc. iPads with Apple Pencil is really good for this. Or there is the dictate feature which will capture spoken word to text. You could also use audio to get students reading aloud, which they can embed in the page for you to assess. Lots of possibilities!!

@MrTompkins
@MrTompkins 4 жыл бұрын
Did you set your groups up manually, or was it via SDS? If it was manually, you can "archive" them - this means they will still be "there" if you or your students want to refer to them, but they become read only. If your groups were done centrally via school data sync then the technicians can just archive all the old groups before they generate the new ones. When you go to your new group and set up your new class notebook for the first time, you can choose to make a fresh blank one, or use an existing one as a template and bring over any sections you want to keep.

Can OneNotebook be effectively used without Teams? We are a Google district and they don't want us to use Teams but I am still determined to make OneNotebook work for me and my classes. We are only allowed to use OneNotebook because a highschool cohort needed access to Interactive notebooks.
@MrTompkins
@MrTompkins 4 жыл бұрын
Yes! I was happily using OneNote with my class for years before I started using Teams! It's not necessary to use Teams at all - you still have the older stand-alone class notebook creation tool to set them up (www.onenote.com/edu/classnotebook). The class notebook ribbon includes all the tools you need to distribute pages and review students work. So the Teams integration is nice but not essential!

Have you considered buying a few iPads with LTE? They are not much more than the base model and you can purchase data-only SIMs to pop into these for a reasonable price - this one on Amazon is £44 for 24 GB/24 months: amzn.to/2US0DPq . I think this extra cost is more than justified in the current climate.

@@MrTompkins we've coughed up for a few of these - dongles though
@MrTompkins
@MrTompkins 4 жыл бұрын
Dongles also work! (with laptops). OneNote would work reasonably well in Offline mode in a BYOD type setup, where students were coming to school each day. OneNote would sync up while they were at school, and the student could continue to work offline at home. But for extended home schooling, this is just not going to fly. I think a dongle or SIM card is a much better option. If you're worried about the kids chugging all the data at once, those SIMs I linked to also come in 1 GB /30 day or 3 GB / 90 day versions. So you could buy a bunch of low denomination SIM cards and issue periodically.

Hi, thank you so much for all of your detailed videos; while there are quite a few videos out there for setting up a Class Notebook, there aren’t many that go over everything that happens after setting it up! Question: do you have any experience with Canvas? We use Canvas but also Microsoft 365 apps and Teams for video conferencing. Canvas has the OneNote Class Notebook integration, but the notebooks are set up through Canvas. I’m wondering if the notebook created through Canvas will be available through Teams or if it would be a completely different notebook? I don’t know if you know anything about Canvas LMS, but I hope that you do! Thanks again for the great videos! P.S. I had a quick look online and found this video on how to create a OneNote notebook via Canvass (kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnevXnd4lJucsM0) and this is clearly using the old class notebook creation tool, and not the newer tool in Teams. If that is the case, then it wont have integration with teams. However, if the school is creating your groups for you in Teams, then there is no reason why you couldnt go ahead and make the notebooks in Teams too.

Thank you so much, I learned all about Teams and One Note from your Videos. But I have a question. How do you prevent students from deleting items on their personal class notebook? Is there a way to lock a image or video, so it doesn't get accidentally deleted while students are working on a assignment?
@MrTompkins
@MrTompkins 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Alexis - thanks for the postive feedback! To answer your question, yes! Well, kind of! For images, I normally select them, right click on them and "set picture as background". This is also super-handy if you have a grid or template already in word or PowerPoint, as you can print to OneNote, and set to background, and the students then find it much easier to ink on it, or type words on top of it. Videos not so much, i'm afraid, but I always keep a "good copy" in my content library and my students know how to copy over another clean copy if they mess theirs up. You also have a page-lock feature, so you can lock the entire page for an assessed piece of work so kids cant "accidentally" delete your comments ;-)

She thinks only her computer laptop with her Microsoft login is allowed in or teacher/school won’t like it. Is that true? Well, you’re very busy so I will go back and watch more of your videos. Last question when u have time - is their a technical way in this advanced age that I’m not thinking of to watch her and hear the interaction with screen/ teacher from another room? This way when she calls me in for help, I have some idea of what has been said? I try not to hover and just keeping passing through room, but I don’t want to be on camera or distract her. @@here2luv363 it doesnt matter which client you use to open the notebook. I have my notebooks open on my school laptop, my home laptop and on my iPad all at the same time, and I can jump between them no problem. The content all syncs so if I type something on the computer, and then pick up my iPad, i'll see it right there. I often work with 2 devices as the camera on the iPad is great for taking photos of textbooks or pages I want to share with students. Also, teachers can give parents/carers their own link to the class notebook so they can view what's in their child's notebook themselves. Regarding watching the maths lessons, teachers are often recording these sessions as they happen and these videos are made available to the student to view after the lesson is over. I dont know if your granddaughter's teacher is doing this but if it is, maybe you can watch them afterwards?

Hey Tammy - this is an after-effect I can apply in the video-editing software I'm using. If you wanted to add this sort of affect generally in windows, you would need to install an app like cursorfx or similar.

Your videos have prompted me to use OneNote class notebooks with my students during virtual learning this year. This semester, I have one student for whom I can see all of her work except in one section of her notebook. Any idea why this is happening or how I can fix it?
@MrTompkins
@MrTompkins 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm...could she have password protected it? Does it throw up a particular error message when you try and access it or does it just appear empty? Could have just glitched somehow. If you cant figure it out, maybe get her to create a new section, move her files to that one and delete the old one.

Thanks for this video - and for the others! Could I ask whether staff will find reviewing work easier via notebook or through the assignments tab in teams? Trying to decide which way to go. (we are a Primary school with 1:1 devices in some year groups - also looking to use this in the event of a local lock down.) Thank you

Hey Rachel - good question! I think it depends on i) how you are feeding back to students and ii) whether you are just sticking with just OneNote assignments or mixing it up a bit and iii) whether you are using the parental reporting tool in teams or the parent link for OneNote. If you are setting a range of assignments, some in OneNote and some elsewhere, then it might be better to use Teams as you can do it all in one place. Teams has a grade screen where a student can see feedback for each task set. If you have turned parent email digest feature on, then parents will get a weekly update on work set and feedback given. On the other hand, if you are doing everything via OneNote, then it might just as easily be done in OneNote. This means teachers can use a range of feedback strategies using ink, or stickers or text which might be nicer for primary. You can share a parent onenote link , so they can see the whole book and not just the assessed pieces.

@@MrTompkins Thank you for your response. Much to ponder I feel! Is it quicker for staff to review work in Teams rather than in OneNote? Trying to ensure that I'm not increasing workload if we stick with OneNote.
@MrTompkins
@MrTompkins 4 жыл бұрын
@@rachelwhite1627 I think sticking with OneNote for now might work best for your setup. It will reduce complexity and give staff more freedom on the types of feedback they want to give. Teams is just text and grade, which works well for secondary schools when you are looking for a consistant approach across the school.

Are you creating your Notebooks in Teams? How are your teams made? Normally when you add a member to your team, it will automatically create them a section in the Notebook. Check there are not two similarly named accounts added to the team?

My gripe with OneNote is you can't open the files in Word. For example, I want to correct student work via the Track Changes facility, but the best I can do is copy the OneNote text to Word, turn on Track Changes, then paste the edited text back to OneNote. Comments do come over (to some extent) but any text deleted doesn't.
@MrTompkins
@MrTompkins 4 жыл бұрын
Hmm - you might be better off using a Teams assignment to deliver a word document for your students to work on. That way you can pass the word doc back and forth between you, making use of comments. Once the assignment is complete, you or the student can use "print to OneNote" to embed the final copy if you wanted to keep everything in OneNote. Alternatively you could try attaching a word document to a onenote page, distribute that page, so each student gets their own copy. It should be able to be opened and will re-save back into the page when it's closed again, but you'll need a bit of experimenting to be sure this will work!

@@MrTompkins not an option I'm afraid, set this particular class up (inadvertently!) as a teachers' group, and MS in their wisdom don't allow you to change the team type!...they should just integrate Word with OneNote.

In fairness to MS, Teams was not designed for the education market, so they are desperately trying to fit the square peg into a round hole.

How do you make student sections? How do you make sure that others cannot enter into that section? I want to make sections for each student to do their own work but I don't want the other students to be able to access their classmates sections. Also, how do you set up a class list?
@MrTompkins
@MrTompkins 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Heidi - a OneNote class notebook is set up that way by default - each student can read/write to their own section, and to the collaboration space, and also see (but not edit) your content library. They cannot see each other’s sections, but you as the teacher can see all the students sections. I recommend setting up your class list by creating a group in Teams first and then use the class notebook creation tool in Teams to set up your book. Check out the first 2 videos in this playlist for guidance on how to do this: kzbin.info/aero/PLxp90x5c0ttbAc0xIXV4K_rQkqUmURVyc

Excellent tutorial, unfortunately distributing notebook pages to students for them to work on is not obvious or user friendly. It's not until a student goes to actually write on a One Note page that the problems start. I wish Microsoft would make this a hundred times more user friendly. Why can't a student request distribute access to a page from the teacher?
