Because of the pandemic, I have been working from home. The healthcare services that I provide actually do not require my physical presence ( I just have to be able to observe and communicate), so I am on zoom all day. I have my sm7b set up just outside of the view of my webcam. And I am running that into my apollo interface and through a Manley VOXBOX channel strip. Having this level of control is really getting out of hand though. I think I have become MORE self conscious about my voice. I have a bunch of presets ready to go. That's right- my voice is EQed differently depending on who I talk to. Completely ridiculous... but everyone says my voice sounds immaculate.

"You will be using it constantly in your studio." Me sitting at home in my bedroom using the SM7B: "Well, I guess I sleep in a studio now!" Jokes aside, this is a brilliant video. I have had my SM7B for a few months but never bothered touching the switches. I am glad I tried them now. The presence boost really makes it sound even more pleasant without losing the signature sound of the SM7B. I like it a lot!

Thanks for the demo. I actually didn't know anything about the SM7B, except that Michael Jackson used it on Thriller and a lot broadcasters use it. Seem pretty versatile. If I were shopping for a dynamic mic right now, I'd also be considering the Aston Stealth, as it's a similar concept, but also has a built-in phantom-powered preamp.

This started as a reply to another comment, but I thought others might find it helpful. The bass rolloff is great for taming boom and the proximity effect, and I use it when recording almost any male singing or speech. It does wonders for my own voice. The default extended low-end response is fantastic for recording instruments though. I love how the flat setting sounds on electric guitar, even if I often end up lopping off that low-end in the mix anyway 😋 The presence "boost" (the mic is passive, so using it technically removes a presence cut that's on by default) sounds unnatural for most voices but is worth experimenting with. I use it very infrequently and pretty much just as an alternative tone for recording electric guitars, but I'm usually just not a huge fan of the sounds it produces regardless of the application. Activating both switches produces what I would describe as a worse, less-natural version of the SM57's tone, so I encourage any fans of the SM7b sound to also keep an SM57 + A2WS windscreen on hand for these applications. I wish there were a mic with the SM57's tight-but-full low end and the SM7b's warm-but-clear high end-that would be an endgame mic for sure. Also, others are right in saying not every preamp is so weak that you'll need an inline preamp, so don't buy one unless you know you need it.
@mikef6063 Жыл бұрын
If I'm doing male voice podcast narration type recording and using the bass cut setting, should I use the windscreen? Is being within 4 inches of the mic good? Been experimenting but would be interested to know your take

Great breakdown. I utilize the Sm7b through a cloud lifter into my dbx 286s into my focusrite scarlett 18i8 and wondered if fiddling with the roll off and presence boost could help with the clarity prior to equalizing.
@Philminator4 жыл бұрын
I have a Scarlett Solo + SM7B and my gain is at about 4 o'clock right before the light goes yellow, no noise and it sounds great, but it's not loud enough, so I increased some gain digitally on my PC, and it sounds great. When I tried adding a cloudlifter, I could no longer crank my gain on my interface to 4 o'clock. I had to scale it back to about 1 o'clock before it goes yellow. Is that normal? I'm looking to make my mic a bit louder, but I still have my dB in my software to nearly 25 dB, plus a cloudlifter. Maybe I'm not understanding what the cloudlifter does, and perhaps I need a higher end audio interface?
@nick836954 жыл бұрын
The Cloudlifter is sending a 'hotter' boosted signal from your mic to your audio interface. The idea is that this extra 25 dB of gain on the way in allows you to not have to turn up your pre-amp quite as high as this can introduce noise in the signal by the time you're getting an appropriate usable level from the mic.
@bigrivermedia7624 жыл бұрын

The SM7b is easily the best investment you can make if you are recording, I've used one on pretty much every source signal including vocals that I have ever need to track and it has always delivered, It may seem expensive for a dynamic microphone, however not all dynamic microphones are created equal, There are very few dynamic microphones that come close to SM7b, I personally also have/use Sennheiser's MD 441 (x2), MD 421 (x8), Electro Voice's EV RE20 (x4) as well as four SM7b microphones. Then less expensive, more limited in purpose dynamic microphones. The SM7b works very well with any preamp that I have tried it with and if you need some more clean headroom from any particular preamp then Cloud Microphones' CL-1 Cloudlifter is a great little device that does just that. Great for use with ribbon microphones too that also need even more clean gain in order to get all the benefits from. All the best
@larrybarfield98134 жыл бұрын
I have not received mine yet,and I am using it for vocals on a Tascam DP 24-sd. I do not have a mic pre amp. Would using the phantom power make it loud enough?
@nekromachine4 жыл бұрын
@@larrybarfield9813 No, no, no. Larry never use phantom power with any dynamic or ribbon microphone connected. 48v of phantom power and a little device that is a preamp booster that enables an additional 20dB of nice, clean gain are two different things entirely. Only use phantom power for your condenser microphones, the newer, active ribbon microphones if you have them where it is required (Sontronics do a couple of nice example of such active ribbon mics) and some DI boxes...etc. where it's stated. I hope the handy little device arrives soon for you as you'll definitely notice the difference man.

@@larrybarfield9813 Anytime Larry fella. Glad to hear you are up and away, hope you are enjoying whatever it is that working on or who you are working with. Being able to help people as well as get answers to questions too via the internet has been very helpful. I started with tape as tracking audio into a computer was not do-able, it is astonishing really how much things have changed for the better in many ways, of course, I have run into my fair share of non-friendly and unwilling (perhaps maybe due to them being not what they claim to be) to help/answer honest/simple questions but on the whole, I have met far more quality people via the internet through audio/music. I do hope that is the same or better for your good self Sir. A pleasure to meet you, take care and again all the very best your way Larry, cheers! Dean and family \m/
