Getting the most out of Echo "Smart Home" Buttons

Those Amazon Echo "game buttons" got much more useful at the end of 2018, and can now be used to trigger Alexa routines, control gadgets, music, and much more. But they can only do one thing at a time, right? Not quite! Learn some tips in this video to get multiple uses out of the same button!

Then you can, get a smart doggy door to let them out when they press the button. And we'll finally have the answer to the age old question of who let the dogs out. It was Alexa.

Thanks for the 'time' tip. Same button to turn the lights/TV off at bedtime and back on in the morning while getting ready for work.

Thanks for the video. In my mind, you're going from physical (light switches, dimmers, etc. ) to voice activated then back to switches again.

the button just looks horrible for a smart home button. it definitely looks like a game button. they need to make a smaller nicer looking smart home button.

I have the Amazon echo buttons and there very nice, I have 2 routines setup, turn on table light and turn off table light, When I tap Echo button the the light turns off and then it comes straight back on again, how to fix this?

Looks like Amazon is no longer selling these. They are out of stock with no expected resupply. Pitty as I would love to have a few for my elderly mom who has trouble with yelling Alexa commands.

I wish routines would include Blink (also an amazon company). A button that you hit that turns all off my hues and arms my home cctv. Sadly. Not ye.

I do find it disappointing that I can't do much with my blink XT cameras on my Echo Show Gen 2. I can look through the cameras on my show but I cannot playback clips or initiate recording to the cloud. Viewing more than one camera on a split screen would also be useful.

I have the Echo Show 2nd generation and two Echo Dot gen 3s. I'm a 55 year old male who now lives alone (my son is an adult now and lives on his own). I think I may order this so if I think I hear somebody in my living room of my single wide trailer in Central Florida at some inappropriate hour I can turn the lights on in the living room and kitchen without verbally interacting with the lady. if somebody is out there hopefully this will prompt them to leave. If this does not work at least it will illuminate them so that I can see who I'm aiming at. I prefer that they panic and scramble back out the door or window whichever the case may be. So this would be mine flood the house with light panic button.

I am setting this up as a panic button for a nearby aging relative who has fallen a few times. I figure I can put one in the bathroom close to the floor and other in the kitchen and basically cover the apartment with buttons that will send me a text message and maybe light up a light in my bedroom to wake me if there is an emergency. I am amazed that Amazon is missing this market opportunity. BTW why not just have the relative speak to Alexa? Half the time he calls her Alison, and I am sure an emergency would not improve that. He was already saved once by calling Alexa to send me a message, but it took dozens of tries over a few hours. The buttons are a bit more straightforward.

Yes, you can change it in the setting for your Echo device is the Alexa app. The setting is called Wake Word.
