Most people when they buy a shotgun also buy some after-market chokes because they think it will improve their patterns. They then go off and shoot without any consideration to the down range ballistics. This clip tells you what should be taken into consideration with respect chokes and cartridges before you go to the trap field.

I use an Improved Modified Choke that my coach told me to get 2 years ago and I have been shooting for 5 years now. This is my 5th year. I did HS Trap and now I am in a summer league out of HS. And I love the choke I have after I got it my score improved. Yet one time I didn't notice, but my older brother for some reason used my shotgun to hunt and put a Turkey Choke in it. Luckily it was a practice and my coach asked why I was doing so bad and then looked at my gun and said "Well the problem is you have turkey choke in it".

Interesting ...Have various guns and I,ve noticed certain cartridges break clays `differently`. . A FITASC champion gave me a handful of the cartridges he used (sponsored). .He said " they all will break the clays ..but some break them better than others!!". . .

For american-style trap at 16 yards start line...scientifically/ ballistically a modified choke with 1 oz load at 1200 feet per second should give most consistent patterns from most shotguns. Most shotguns that have a bore of 18.4, 18.5, 18.6. Anything bigger than 18.6 it is fairly uncommon.

I had my Mossberg 500 w. 28" barrel, pattern very thin with the modified choke, at least I thought. Swapped out for full choke and suddenly I am breaking targets left, right and centre! Patterning full choke I could immediately see why.

Good video good information. You have to keep constantly going back to the pattern plate because different temperatures different elevations different weather all are a Factor... even ammunition brands and batch to batch of the same cartridge have changes.

Not sure what that was about but it wasn’t choosing chokes....

That was good info, but you never got around to talking about choosing chokes.

Exactly, I was wondering the same thing myself. Do you call Briely Chokes and see if they know what the hell he's talking about or what?

+BAMBI243 What's rubbish about it? Any pro shooter or gunsmith worth their weight in salt will tell you the same thing as this video pointed out. You sound like you're to lazy or arrogant to go out and pattern your gun. A little effort can go a long way in this sport.
