I'm trying to improve with my first shortboard. I have a problem where if I bring my midlength and the shortboard I know I'll give up and just go back to the midlength to catch more waves. Just curious, what wave heights do you choose to bring this board out in?

All wave heights, usually don't go surfing if I know it's gonna be flat... Even in waist height waves there's always bigger sets, but if you just get really deep and paddle for any decent wave you will definitely improve... Even just leave the midlength at home haha!

One thing that dramatically helped me was getting a shortboard(s) that felt right for my weight. It's easy to tell when you have too much or too little foam; but KNOWING when you have the right amount of volume is tricky, especially if you're new to the sport. I was addicted to my 48L foamy, tried dropping to 5'10 33L eps short board and absolutely hated it. I went up to a 5'10 38L PU fish and felt much more comfortable. I broke the 38L fish one day and swapped down to the 33L eps and found that since I progressed so much with my time on the 38L fish, the 33L eps felt more manageable with paddle strength and popping up. I'm now completely addicted to my 33L short board and cant even think about riding anything else on most days. This was all over the course of about 2 years. I'm 6'1 165-170lbs and surf anything between waist/knee high all the way to head or slightly overhead high. TL;DR try different boards with slightly lower volumes than what your current favorite board is. Part of this journey is forcing yourself to ride something smaller. Also EPS makes boards feel more buoyant even in smaller sizes, definitely look into that.
