My Grandfather’s Grandfather Fought @ Gettysburg as part of the “1st Volunteer Cavalry of Pennsylvania”. He Survived and married after the war. I am 62 years old now and Never Been to Gettysburg But i will make it this Spring. But what AMAZES me is that if he did not Survive NONE of my Family Members would have Existed on My Fathers Side. My Grandfather’s Father would have Never been Born, Then my Grandfather & Then My Father & Then Me & None of my 5 Children Nor my 3 Grandchildren. That is VERY Powerful and with all the losses there how many Families did not Even Exist. I was in the Army When this Movie was made & This Movie STILL Brings Tears to my Eyes when I watch it.

Rowan D Nowicki Glad you asked. I'm partial In 2 ways: the first is heritage. I live in Texas and am very proud of Texas history, but I also have 2 ancestors, brothers, who fought for Tennessee and the CSA. The other way is my political views. I believe that it's wrong to let the federal government start writing laws based on what IT views as moral and Immoral. Any power the federal government has is a double edged sword. Sure they can use it for good, but at some point they WILL use it to their own benefit at the expense of the people. The south was right to secede, I believe, because of that. I also believe secession to be legal. First in the Declaration of Independence (which ISNT a legal document) we hear the idea that government derives its power from the consent of the governed, and that if the governed aren't happy with the government, it's their right to change it. Now, while this isn't a LEGAL document, it does help set up the proper view of the constitution. Now, any powers not specifically listed in the constitution, go to the States and the people, as to make sure undue power does not fall into the hands of the federal government. Because the constitution never mentions secession, it would appear to me, that it is perfectly legal IF the state's people vote to secede. From what I've seen there are plenty like me who hold these views, and like me, are completely against racial superiority of any race. The confederate battle flag has been corrupted by white supremacists, and it needs to stop. The misconception is that modern confederates are all white supremacists and all agree with slavery or at least Jim Crowe. This is not the case. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for asking.

Rowan D Nowicki Yeah. I agree, the CSA did believe in the inferiority of African Americans. Ill be the first to admit that much. But some in the CSA held the Lincoln/Lee view, that slavery was wrong, but that blacks should never have equal rights. Obviously this view is wrong, yet it WAS a progressive step in the right direction. Again, granted. The CSA winning WOULD extend the time souther slavery lasted, but it too would eventually go away from pressure from other western nations. Thanks for letting this be a polite discussion rather than the typical “Confederate scum” and “f*** you yankee” back and forth i see in far too many comment sections.

Just came back from visiting Gettysburg. It IS hallowed ground, you can sense it and feel it as well. A very moving experience. I actually got to ride the horse Martin Sheen rode. Gray was her name , a mare but in life it was Traveler a gelding. I love this sound track and the movie it moves me and makes me grateful for the over 600,00 that died during the civil war.

I drove up to Gettysburg from Georgia in 2018 with my grandfather. We had an amazing time seeing the scenery and sites on the way up there. We both had a strong interest in history and always wanted to see Gettysburg. I'll never forget how emotional and amazed he was when he saw the battlefield up close. Sadly, he passed away in 2021, but the adventure we took is something I'm so glad we had a chance to do and something I will always cherish forever.

Several have asked so I thought I would reply. The painting shown here is titled 'Courage In Blue' and the artist is Mort Kunstler, a very popular Civil War artist. Also, previous comments are correct. This scene was inspired by events at The Battle of Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862. The Yanks took a vicious beating in that battle, with Chamberlain taking massive casualties, almost half of his division.

Don, well, not exactly accurate. According to battle reports, the 20th Maine took about 22 total casualties at Fredricksburg, with only 2 or 3 of them KIA. And Chamberlain was the Regimental commander at the time although he was eventually promoted to Brigade Commander. He was not the Division Commander (the 20th Maine was assigned to the 1st Division of the 5th Corps). And, yes, the 20th Maine was involved in the assault of Marye Heights at Fredricksburg but was pinned down on the slope due to very heavy fire from the Georgians lined up behind the Sunken Road Wall and was eventually used to cover the withdrawal of Union forces across the Rappahannock. Overall, the 20th Maine lost nearly 300 men dead, equally split between combat and non-combat, with another 381 wounded and 15 captured as POWs out of a total force of 1,621 men. The 20th Maine was a very good unit and has the legendary defense of the Union Left Flank at Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg to its deserved credit - Texas Hoosier

They only came back with I think around 46 men still combat effective, almost all of it's officer staff dead. Hancock and the Colonel both knew it was suicide, but they charged forward anyway, and began combat with a Rebel Brigade, all this happened because Sickle thought that his Arty would be good out in the orchard.

There are so many great stories from Gettysburg that are overlooked. First Minnesota, Greene’s Brigade on Culps Hill, Alonzo Cushing, 9th Massachusetts Artillery, 16th Maine and so many more. The 20th Maine and Little Round top are certainly inspiring but very often receive far more attention than I think they deserve. There are so many instances of other fights which were just as pivotal or possibly even more but are generally overlooked

I had 2 Great Great Great Uncles who were cousins and knew each other since they lived with their families within close traveling distance: One in the tip of West Virginia which penetrates into Pennsylvania and who fought with the Confederate Regiment, and one who lived in Pennsylvania and fought with the Pennsylvania Regiment. They both died fighting each other in the 3rd day Battle of General Pickett's Charge. My Dad took me and my 2 brothers to visit their monuments with their last names of Wolfe at the Gettysburg Battleground.

You guys need to contact Mr. Turner ,who is said to have backed the "Gettysburg," & "God and Generals" movies the last book in this trilogy is "Last Full Measure" which is awesome in that it is about Grant and Lee and the months before the end of the war, ,Petersburg, Richmond, and the months prior to Appomattox, and the end of the war. In the Gods & Generals, movie look at the man speaking to John Bell Hood ,in the part where they are all singing "Bonnie Blue Flag, anybody recognize him? :)

That is him talking to John Belle Hood at the gathering of the confederate troops for a show that Hood arranged and they sat around singing "The Bonnie Blue Flag. Turner, is said to be a big "Civil War Buff". I'm told he was also in the movie , "Gettysburg" as a character in the background.

I knew he was in the scene too. George Allen (he of the "macaca" infamy in 2006) was also in the scene. IIRC Senator Harry Byrd was also in the movie. Back to Ted Turner, he was shown several times in Gettysburg as Colonel Patton. He gets killed right after Armistead implores his brigade to push toward the High Water Mark at the wall.

That's a very good Idea! You could start with Re-en-actors! Those are the guys who could get the ball rolling , there's strength in numbers it is said and there are a lot of you guys who are dedicated to portraying the Civil War , right... The SVC groups , just a matter of getting them all involved. There were also a lot of famous battles fought in the "West" as well , like Shiloh, Franklin, Chickamauga, just to name a few.

That speech highlighted that Virginia in particular, and the South in general, had a lot to do with the founding of the USA, and did not frivously secede from the union it helped create. Enman, was actually a real person with a Civil War Record...he was from the foothills of the Smokey Mountain's area of North Carolina. It's to bad they chose to film that movie overseas , instead of on location where it really took place. Great movie , but sad ending ;however, realistic of the time.

I think that is a great Idea! Someone suggested writing Newt Gingrich. He and co-author William R. Forstchen wrote novel named "Gettysburg" and "Never Call Retreat", which was on the New York Times Bestsellers List. It is also a novel of the Civil War and compared to being as good as "The Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara's but in my opinion, not quite true! Although,definitely some good reading. it is popular historical fiction but follows close to the truth.

@Finback353 He still had Longstreet, but he was mostly a defensive type of commander, hence he said the attack at Gettysburg was a monumental bad idea. Which it was. Lee still had AP Hill who was quite a capable commander. Too bad they didn't bring Braxton Bragg east, he was doing well in the west.

I hate all the crap today about the confederacy and how racist it is and I’m 14 and I wanna take the civil war in as much as possible before this world gets freakin worse and the civil war to me is very close and humble and I love it and I want it to grow back but sadly in this world it’s not. But great movie and soundtrack from Gettysburg to I love every part of it and the war.

That's to bad, because the last book was about the end of the war with Grant & Lee . Shaara gives a balanced experience of the temperament, sensibility, and character of generals on both sides of the battle lines. of the horrific battles that took place as Grant and Lee struggled for superiority in the field. The battle of Cold Harbor, Petersburg, on to Appomattox , and the end of the War.

Didn't they film Antietam for the film, but cut it out of the theatrical release? IMHO, G&G would have been a better mini-series with the extra battle included. I think the director's cut was included on the DVD but I haven't seen it.

The one thing that grates on my eyes every time I watch this film is the really obese Southern troops. Why did they put so many of them up front? Few people were obese in those days and we all know the Southern Soldiers were going without many meals by then. Sometimes the music is too beautiful to depict men dying violently, my other little problem with an otherwise great film.

sorry, but history movies aren't big at the moment. People today are into mindless actiony movies such as transformers and the fast and the furious. I did like Valkyie and Defiance. But civil war and revolutionary war movies are for those who respect past events. Most people today ignore our past and only live in the present. This is why "The Patriot" is the only revolutionary war movie I can think of, even though that war founded one of the most powerful and important nations in the world.

Absolutely, I agree...people need to know more of what actually happened in the Civil War/War of Northern Aggression. It should be told and historically correct. So may people have the wrong idea of what it was all about. Books, depending where you live, are printed incorrectly. To those who gave the supreme sacrifice, the "Killer Angels", it needs to be told correctly to all to see. Just like the series "Roots", made for TV series which was watched by millions.
