You can see the love and pride in Tommy's eyes when he speaks of Phar lap.

I met the delightful Tommy Woodcock as an elderly gentleman at Albury racecourse. A treasure and absolute delight.

Wow. On what Tommy's saying Phar Lap would have to be the greatest horse to have raced in Australia.

Some time ago the Melbourne Cup ran “The race that never was,” where 24 of the previous winners “raced” against each other. Phar Lap won, Carbine came second, & Makybe Diva came third. It’s on KZbin.

There is a wonderful photo of Tommy that is from the National Portrait Gallery that can be found onlne. It says it all and shows him with his other love, Melbourne Cup starter Reckless who finished second in the 1977 race. Tommy trained him outright. Search for Reckless and Tommy Woodcock.

I use to help out at Tommy's stables in 1974 and Reckless and Impeller were the most beautiful horses, you could lie down with Reckless (Freddy was Tommy's nickname for him) I have good memories of that time Tommy was such a gentleman, I remember him giving all the horses sugar on the date that Pharlap died.

It still happens most of the time in horseracing. Tommy was originally an apprentice jockey from mid north coast NSW. They are taught to be respectful when in training and call their master as Mr / Ms. Same with trainers when speaking of the owners. A sport full of tradition where the people like Tommy were never in it for the money.

Tommy out of love and for the better if kindness he may have wanted to save Pharlap from any more abuse of racing and using the wonderful horse. He may have put the horse in a place of peace by killing him.😢
